What I had done, because I had the same problem, was I went with an average of pages of books I wanted to read (500) and multiplied that to my original goal of 12 books and then I rounded up to 10k because it seemed like a nice number to push myself for :D

Yes I'd thought of that too, but I knew there were some short books I wanted to read too (that was my back up plan if it seemed I wasn't going to reach my challenge of 12 books lol, bit cheating maybe, but intended to motivate me) and didn't want to set a too high a goal and get disappointed and demotivated. Also because work can be an overload and didn't know if I was going to be up to reading after work. So I've now set a tentative goal for now, I can always raise that or set a more challenging goal for next year ;P
