Oh I LOVED Daughter of Smoke and Bone! It was my favorite book of the year that I read it (2013). It's a very "Romeo and Juliet" story, except with magic and aliens and alternate planes of existence and genocide and a battle between factions on a distant world ... and they don't kill themselves at the end, so it's got a better ending! I'm a sucker for an angsty love story :-)

I read the first book of the Clifton Family Chronicles (can't recall the name of it right now) by Jeffrey Archer, and the second one is perfect for this prompt – Sins of the Father. Now if they all could fit in as easily, but bit by bit they are. I just have to go through so many books because I do not remember all that I have… Over 1600 on my Kindle. I know. I'm sick because I keep adding more. I have an addiction, but I can live with this one. ;-)

I'm trying to pick books that I already own for this challenge (as much as possible, at least). Of the 100+ books that I own that I haven't read, only The Memory Keeper's Daughter fits the bill.

Another that comes to mind is The Gravedigger's Daughter. I was only able to get through a few pages of it, but lots of people love this book.

A bit of luck: I got Oncle Anghel by Romanian author Panait Istrati at my usual charity bookstore last month, before I read the 2017 list in detail. This will be a perfect fit!

Panait Istrati was in fashion in France at several periods, quite notably during the 70s. I don't think he's very well known in the US; that novel at least doesn't seem to have been translated into English.

I started reading the book yesterday; looks pretty good.

The Shoemaker's Wife is an all time favorite of mine. I found it captivating. I was very invested in the characters. I enjoyed the author's rich descriptions.

For the challenge I read The Hidden Gallery (The full title is The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place Book 2: The Hidden Gallery.) This book is the second of a series- the first is The Mysterious Howling.

This series has interesting characters. I was not as captivated by this book as I was the first in the series, but I am still interested enough in where it is going that I have already requested the third in the series from my local library. One of my favorite aspects of these books is the highly quotable advice of Agatha Swanburne. It is charming and zany- I just wish the central plot would move a bit faster. After the cliff hanger ending of the first book, I thought the next book would have hit the ground running.

A couple of my favorite quotes:
"...with the instinctive knack every good governess has for turning something enjoyable into a lesson, and vice versa..." (This one is not a Swanburne quote-it is written in reference to the main character. I think I like it so much because it resounds with me as a mother and teacher.)

"When a big leap is required, a running start makes all the difference-so get moving!"

"To be kept waiting is unfortunate, but to be kept waiting with nothing interesting to read is a tragedy of Greek proportions."

"The more one asks, the more one knows, and the more one knows, the more one asks."

I really like Elizabeth Gaskell - her Gothic Tales is very good. I would put her style somewhere between Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters.

I finished America's First Daughter last night. I thought it started pretty slow. I wasn't that interested in her life as a younger girl; however, the rest of it more than made up for it. The closer I got to the end, the more I wanted to keep reading. I've always been really interested in Thomas Jefferson.
