I don't know how many books I will be able to read. We have a long weekend here, with lots of things planned already. And my children have an extra day (tuesday) off (maybe I'll just let them play games at the computer all day, so I can read in peace ;)...).I think I'll be able to read about 3 or 4.
Are we decided on the name Chattering Book Addicts? If so I will change the name on our thread. I keep checking to back to see if J'mom has posted the challenges yet. It is cloudy and gray here which makes it a great day for gophering :)
*sigh* All my efforts and we end up with such a pedestrian name! ;DCan we add Crush Competition to the end?? lol
I keep checking in to see if the competition guidelines have been posted yet too. I'm excited to start planning!
Elsbeth: yes, I figured that out by now ;-)I'm okay with Chattering Book Addicts! I keep checking back here too to see if the full toppled rules have been posted :D
I changed our name to Chattering Book Addicts. It is easy to switch if anyone objects.Dawn - I am more than happy to add Crushes the Competition if everyone agrees. :)
I think I can reasd 3 books in the week if I pick short ones. I googled the Game of Life just to see what kind of categories there were (for gophering purposes). I came up with some possibilities: birth, death, marriage, school, retirement, high school graduation, wealth, poverty, divorce, first kiss, accident, first job, earn a degree, career changes, unemployment, illness, jail.

lol
Any which way is okay with me, I've just been having way too much fun with the alliteration!
Ooh I love the new name =]Thanks Roz and Lynn for letting us know how many books you think you can read.
And Lynn, lets see what pops up for the rules and maybe we can figure out how we can organise it?

Hmmm, since we seem to have entered the arena of pro-wrestling, maybe we should shorten our moniker to "The Crushers" ;D
Okay, I know I said I could find a book for every challenge but I'll have a really hard time with Childhood. So unless absolutely necessary I would like to avoid it. Though I will take them on if we need it!! :)
Yey, rules are up. Now to go through my pile of unread things I made for thr toppler and see where they can fit.
Dawn, the first thing for Childhood, 5 pts, that came to mind was the first Harry Potter book. Maybe someone has it on their to read list? Toppler's are so fun I wish we could start sooner but at least we have some time to bounce ideas off each other.
That's what I'm doing June. I am hoping my books might fit more than one category so we can fit them in for the most points. I will have a start tomorrow. Night y'all.
Here are some books high on my tbr list and of manageable length that I would sign up for if it works for the team...for Fabulous Vacation... Trail of Feathers: In Search of the Birdmen of Peru by Tahir Shah
for Get Remarried/Fresh Start... Dry by Augusten Burroughs (he doesn't get remarried but he does give up drinking to make a fresh start)
for Lose Job/Take Up New Occupation... The Book of Harold: The Illegitimate Son of God by Owen Egerton (his new occupation is "2nd coming of Christ" - sounds irreverent but supposedly very thoughtful and inspiring book)
Now that the whole list is up I'm off to see how many categories I can fit a book in! Planning a half the fun! :)
To bad Harry is too old by the last book, cause I still need to read that one!
I could read many of the categories, but I do prefer one for which I already have books at home or on my ereader. I usually order books second-hand but they are sent from other countries and it can easily take over 2 weeks before they arrive, and that's obviously not very convenient for a toppler ;-)I'll have a closer look this afternoon.
So my goal book number is 7, but I could probably do more. Preliminary thoughts for me,
Turn 16, 5 points Riding in Cars with Boys: Confessions of a Bad Girl Who Makes Good Based on a true story, the author even went to my high school and had a same teacher, lol he was teaching over 40 years same school
Graduation, 3 points The Handmaid's TaleDystopian
Visit from In-Laws, 3 points Horror
or
Retire, 3 points One word Title Frankenstein
Get a Pet, 5 points Ape House Exotic Pet
Get Divorce, 5 points The Street of a Thousand Blossoms WWII
I also have my list of books, sitting here to be read if we can find a category for them,
The Joy Luck Club, I was think fresh starts, so maybe if we fill up one life board and go to the next this could help. That way I don't duplicate Tejas Janet.
The End of Eternity
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
The Witch's Daughter
The Book Thief
Brainstorming for others,
Have Baby 5 points, A Hundred Flowers I really loved this book.
I know Sarah Jigz is great with organizing, so I'll leave it up to her to puzzle us in. So Sarah, feel free to juggle me around as we get more book lists from other members. :)
Dawn The Book Thief fits Childhood ( pretty sure she is under 13) or Divorce ( WWII)Now I am really really going to sleep :)
Just checking in - late I know! Nice job on coming up with a name and to Sarah for volunteering her planning skills! Nice to see I'm with some of my teamies from last time too!I'm going to be on holiday 5th - 12th (In theory - my partner just kicked the door and thinks he's broken his toe so we'll be off to the minor injuries unit in a bit - if it is, we might have to rearrange our holiday). So I won't have internet for the first 5 days which will kill me! To err on the side of caution, I will commit to 1 book, but I am hoping to do 2 but if I don't end up going away then I could read a lot more - will keep you posted!
Only just seen the rules and categories so I will scan my books in a bit to see what fancy reading while on my hols and what it fits in to.
I am assuming that we want to fill up all the challenges (3 & 5 pointers) at least once so that we can start a second board. It sounds like we can run it like we did in Bingo.
And I'm going to be super easy to fit in, I've found a book off my TBR stacks for every challenge except 5 – read a book a main character gives birth and I'm sure I can find one, I just need to search harder. I'll try that tomorrow, now it's time to go to sleep!! :)
Some (short) books I could read (at first investigation, I'm sure I could find more if needed). I can read 1, maybe 2 depending on the books, but just put me down for 1 for now and I'll report back if I can read more.Childhood
5 – read a book where the main character is under 13
Running with Scissors (the main character is 12 when the book starts, but I'm not sure how many years are covered)
3 – read a YA book
Stargirl
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
Turn 16: Have a party and get your driver’s license
5 – read a book where a car or driving plays a part
3 – read a book with a big party
College: Were you studious, or did you major in partying?
5 – read a book with a college student
Where She Went (not 100% sure)
3 – read a book with drinking in it
Graduation: Did you have a job, or fear for your future?
5 – read a book where someone is unemployed
3 – read a dystopian/apocalyptic book
Get Married
5 – read a book where a wedding plays a noticeable part
3 – read a book where the main character is married
Buy a House
5 – read a book that takes place in a residence (house, apartment, hotel, inn, cabin, etc)
3 – read a book with a single family house, condo or apartment building on the cover
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency
Have a Baby
5 – read a book a main character gives birth
3 – read a book where a main character has a child under 2
Your In-Laws Come to Visit for a Month

3 – read a book about a dog
Go on a Fabulous Vacation
5 – read a book that takes place in a foreign country you know little about
The Housekeeper and the Professor
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency
Like Water for Chocolate
3 – read a book that takes place at the beach or the mountains
Lose Your Job
5 – read a book where the main character takes up a new occupation
3 – read a book with a color in the title (because you need to read What Color is Your Parachute?)
A Redbird Christmas (or does the color have to be a single word?)
Get a Divorce
5 – read a book that takes place in a war/civil conflict
Charms for the Easy Life (not 100% sure if it fits)
3 – read a romance
A Walk to Remember
Win the Lottery
5 – read any book
3 – read any book
That's easy, too many to choose from :)
Get Remarried
5 – read a book where someone makes a fresh start
Where She Went (I'm pretty sure this fits, but only because I read the first book. It doesn't become very clear from the description)
3 – read a fantasy
The Ruins of Gorlan
Retire
5 – read a book with a main character over 60
3 – read a book with a one word title
Stargirl

You could use it for the 'war/civil conflict'! Or fantasy.
Here are some possible books I am considering reading while on holiday:Ender's Game
Annihilation
The Gunslinger
Storm Front
Moon Called
Grave Witch
They will all fit under the "Fantasy" under "Get Remarried" category, plus Ender's would fit for "YA" under "Childhood" category or "War/Conflict" under "Get a Divorce" category. Also, Annhiliation would fit "One word title" in "Retirement" category. It might be best to put me down for the "fantasy" one then I have options when it comes to it as I don't know what I'll feel like reading on holiday till I get there! Sorry if that makes me a pain! I suppose I could also be put in the "read any book" under "Win the Lottery".
Ooh, I've just seen the list yay =] I'll go and have a good mooch now. When I did an estimate yesterday of how mnay books people said they could read, I got a total of 41 and that doesn't include everyone yet as some people haven't checked in. There are 15 Tasks spilt into 2 making 30 tasks, so we should definetely finish the board at least once =]
Peggy seeing as you said you may be able to read 1 or 2 what would you prefer to read? The same goes for you Lilisa, which task would you prefer to read?
Sarah seeing as your on holiday I was thinking how about Fantasy for the 3 points, and the 'any book' for 5 points. How's that?
Dawn that's awesome you have something for every task =]
The only ones I'm not keen on reading are Childhood, Have a Baby or Get a Divorce.
I'm fine for everything else, but haven't got a book for Pets, so we'll see what I can do, and wait till everyone has checked in.
The tasks in bold will count towards books that I will be reading in June. As I said before I think I can give you 7 books. Childhood
5 – read a book where the main character is under 13
3 – read a YA book
Turn 16: Have a party and get your driver’s license
5 – read a book where a car or driving plays a part
3 – read a book with a big party
College: Were you studious, or did you major in partying?
5 – read a book with a college student
*3 – read a book with drinking in it
Graduation: Did you have a job, or fear for your future?
*5 – read a book where someone is unemployed
3 – read a dystopian/apocalyptic book
Get Married
5 – read a book where a wedding plays a noticeable part
*3 – read a book where the main character is married
Buy a House
*5 – read a book that takes place in a residence (house, apartment, hotel, inn, cabin, etc)
*3 – read a book with a single family house, condo or apartment building on the cover
Have a Baby
*5 – read a book a main character gives birth
*3 – read a book where a main character has a child under 2
Your In-Laws Come to Visit for a Month
*5 – read a book with some type of reunion of family members
3 – read a horror book
Get a Pet: What was your first pet?
5 – read a book with an exotic animal
3 – read a book about a dog
Go on a Fabulous Vacation
5 – read a book that takes place in a foreign country you know little about
3 – read a book that takes place at the beach or the mountains
Lose Your Job
*5 – read a book where the main character takes up a new occupation
*3 – read a book with a color in the title (because you need to read What Color is Your Parachute?)
Get a Divorce
5 – read a book that takes place in a war/civil conflict
3 – read a romance
Win the Lottery
5 – read any book
3 – read any book
Obviously!
Get Remarried
*5 – read a book where someone makes a fresh start
3 – read a fantasy
Retire
*5 – read a book with a main character over 60
3 – read a book with a one word title
I'm sure I can do other categories if needed by doing some gophering, but these fit my June reading plan so it would be easier to do the above.
Edit - Categories with a * next to it means I don't mind finding a book to fit.
Categories with no bold or * means I'd prefer not to read.
Just put me where's easiest Sarah. I have No .1 Ladies Detective Agency (buy a house 3 points / vacation 5 points) and Running with Scissors (childhood 5 points, if it counts) in paperback and could bring one of those with me to the festival to read on the camping (not sure if I will get around to much reading though), increasing the chance of being able to read 2 books for the challenge. But if it turns out to be better for the challenge if I read another book, that's of course okay too!
I'll pop you down for 1 one now =] Okay I'll keep those 2 tasks in mind then, When others have checked in.The other Sarah right? I haven't read the booky.
Peggy, from what I remember, the boy in Running with scissors is young throughout the whole book, he may be 16-18 at the end perhaps but the majority is when he is around 12 so I'd say it would count.
Thanks Sarah - Fantasy and Read any Book sound good for me. I'm choosing short books so fingers crossed I'll manage both.
Sarah wrote: "Thanks Sarah - Fantasy and Read any Book sound good for me. I'm choosing short books so fingers crossed I'll manage both."Awesome =] Your sorted then hehe.
Peggy, I'm thinking if Jmom says the 'Running with Scissors' books fits the category. I'll give you the 5 points in Childhood, okay?
I can do probably 2 books, maybe 3, plus an audio.Turn 16: read a book where a car plays a part. Harry Truman's Excellent Adventure: The True Story of a Great American Road Trip
Getting Remarried: Read a book where someone makes a fresh start. The Memory of Love...this sounds like it will fit from the description. Has anyone read it?
Retire: read a book with a main character over 60. The Madonnas of Leningrad
I will try to listen to Housekeeping on audio. Not sure where it will fit...lottery if nothing else.
If these don't fit in with what we need, let me know and I can adjust.
What you prefer is perfect JKmays. Do you want me to put you down for 2 just now, and if you can do a third let me know? I'll let you know where I place you soon, but it'll be out of what you've chosen so no worries =]
Tejas Janet wrote: "for Lose Job/Take Up New Occupation... The Book of Harold: The Illegitimate Son of God by Owen Egerton (his new occupation is "2nd coming of Christ" - sounds irreverent but supposedly very thoughtful and inspiring book)"I'm not sure about that one, I'd have no idea, best to check with Jmom for that one =]
Also.. how many books do you think you'd like to reaf for the toppler? Gathering from the books you chose; 3?
I see Peggy has checked about Running with Scissors on the main thread. Just wanted to point out that I have a book that fits the category if the above doesn't work.
