Anirudh I am mad about his writings too. Really good stuff. As you mentioned it has very little magic in it. But that works better for the setting of the book. Bazan is a perfect opposite of Gandalf :)

I liked all the characters in this book. even minor ones like Glotka's assistants. This book is based on characters rather than a plot. So naturally characters had to be strong and interesting. What do you think about the bloody nine? (view spoiler)

Why did you wait so long to read the second book? Didn't you like the first one?

For me, the northmen were the funniest. Dogman the most :D They really were so different from the southerners.

Jezel is meant to be like that. He is not a strong willed person as you can see at the end of book 3. For his purpose his role actually suits.

Glotka is my favourite too :) Can you imagine linking a crippled torturer? :D But he is the best character in the series for me and I love his monologues. Body found floating by the dock :D

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) Thats true if Sanderson has larger than life magic systems then Abercrombie has some most awesome characters.

Yeah, I think I didn't noticed anybody else but Logen in first book. In second & third Logen was there but others were there too. I noticed the funny jokes exchanged between Northmen. I noticed how there was so much tension between Poulder and Korove (I don't know if I spelled their names correctly). I notice how West was devastated by this tension and foolishness of his prince and his friend.

I loved the authoritative Jezel ordering around his council. Taking great decisions and showing his counsel men their place when they thought that they could easily brain wash him.

First book was good but still for me fantasy meant magic at that time. Tigana changed that notion and I decided to read this.

yeah, body floating by the dock :)

One of the reason that I liked Glokta was that whatever he did, he knew he was doing it to survive in a world which was so hard for a crippled. A man with a good heart.

what you like about Joe's writing?

message 153: by Anirudh (new)

Anirudh GRRM has combined both of those worlds. Now you know why it takes 5 years :P:P

I think first book there was a lot of focus on Logen as be begins the story. Yes the jokes were indeed funny.
Didn't you like Bayaz in the first book?

Yeah that was a hilarious scene :D Sult was shocked beyond belief :D

Hmmm magic should be limited otherwise it becomes too cartoonish. Fire bolts and lightning storms are better in games than books. Makes it less realistic or entertaining.

I liked how he talked about his aches too, you could really feel it when he says it.

Yeah do you remember the scene where he has to torture an old friend?

I like his straight forward righting. No unnecessary stuff is narrated.
Have you seen the complete map of the world?

message 154: by Em Lost In Books (last edited Jun 27, 2014 10:53AM) (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) Don't talk Martin, he will be discussed next year:P:P:P

I liked Bayaz in every book. In first he had this mysterious aura around him. But as the series progressed we get to know how cunning and manipulative he is.

true, when I'd read that scene I'd laughed loud, my brother who was sitting next to me gave me the look that told me that I'd gone mad.

there is also one from the first book when Logen first time saw a fountain in Adua and he looked at that with so much awe and surprise while Jezal who was standing next to him gave an appalled look when he was asked about how the fountain works.

hahahahaha.............I know that was coming. :)

Abercrombie's writing is just amazing. he makes you feel every emotion. he has done wonders with Glokta's character.

not clearly :(:(

just one regret, he could've done more with Ferro...

I don't pay much attention to maps.

message 155: by Anirudh (new)

Anirudh As always, next year :D

Yeah He is a really powerful character. I think he was specifically built as an anti gandalf with his grey and unforgiving nature. His account of what really happened with his master is really thrilling.

Yeah I remember that scene. Jazel seeing Logen for the first time and forming opinions :D:D

Yeah, Glotka is a very complex character. A man tortured turns torturer himself that's really something. And he has such powers despite his frail body.

Yes I think Ferro could have been developed more. Maybe it will happen in his future books. She comes as a mystery and still remains one in the end.

I never really understood that :D Maps are so much fun ! You can trace events and places as you read along :)

I never thought that something will be in league of ASOIAF for you:P:P:P

message 159: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) Bayaz was a very intriguing character one with all the magical abilities. I didn't liked him in the first because I thought if he was such a powerful magi why didn't he uttered a few words and get over with all the problems. but while reading the second book I get to know what his true purpose was though again I was wrong, because we got a whole new side of him in third. So I liked his apprentice more who was pretty steady with behavior and purpose throughout the series.

I seriously hated Glokta in first but in second and third he was outstanding. I felt hatred for him in first, pity in second and respect/proud in third.

yup she deserves a book. hope he'll write one soon for her and for us.

this series is just outstanding even without magic.

message 160: by Anirudh (new)

Anirudh They are not the same but characters and darkness are pretty much same :)

Yeah I liked the way he said they specialise. That actually makes a lot of sense.
Yes the first two laws prevent him from doing whatever he wants and even then he has limits. I like that :)
The third book is a game changer. It just rips everything apart :)

I loved him from page one :D The way he spoke especially to himself was just something else. And what I really like was the face that it is so rare to see such characters become main characters. Only other one I can think of is Tyrion :)

I am sure there will be something in the future regarding her.

There is very little even now.

(view spoiler)

message 172: by Srividya (new)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) @Manu - badly behind in all my series :( :( Hope the next few months of furious reading will help :P :P

@Ishi - that question was raised by Anoop earlier in the year. And according to Sumit, if its a series like Ken Follett's Century Trilogy or something like Follett's World Without End series, it should work.

However, if it is like a prequel and sequel, it won't be counted as a series. Hope this helps :)
