Misty | 1505 comments I have things on my list that aren't out yet either. I planned them in because I knew I would be reading them when they did...

Heather and Misty, you might want to check my YA list since I have been reading quite a few LGBT YA books. Look for people like Julie Anne Peters and David Levithin.

message 103: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments thanks!

message 104: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments Question, Linda Grace: I am planning on reading Maus for one of the tasks, but since it is a graphic novel, it has no page count on GR. Scholastic, the publisher, doesn't have anything listed. Amazon counts it as 160 pages. I have librarian status and could change it according to Amazon, but since I am reading it, I don't want to seem fishy...

message 105: by [deleted user] (new)

:) Misty, you are so principled! :) Because the page count isn't necessary for our leaderboard, it is fine with me if you use 160 as your page count. I don't think it is fishy to change it according to Amazon. If you have the librarian status, I say go for it!! :) I'm sure other Goodreaders will appreciate you adding it.

message 106: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments Change is made.
Yep, principled, that's me.
*waggles eyebrows mischievously*

message 107: by Lydia (new)

Lydia (loverofinformation) | 596 comments Regarding Challenge 2.15 [sorry, again:], does anyone know of author's whose first name might be Norma, Brenda, Loretta, or Norman? Thanks for any assistance.

message 108: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments What I did was googled "Young adult author + [first name:]" and saw what came up.

message 109: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (JenJen1221) | 623 comments For task 4.20 I was wondering if anyone loves books from the humor genre. I haven't read any, if not much from this & so let me know if you have recommendations. Thanks!

message 110: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (affie) | 468 comments Jennifer, I don't know if they 'count' for the humor genre, but I read a few Captain Underpants books when I was younger, and recently read some of them with my little brothers and nephews, and they loved them. You could check those out...! They are silly, goofy, and in my opinion, so dumb you just have to laugh out loud, funny...

message 111: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments I think Capt. Underpants definitely qualifies. Also, one of the most banned/challenged books in recent years, which is a shame. It's the only thing most boys want to read.
I found this list. Hope it helps.

message 112: by [deleted user] (new)

I would recommend The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but I never thought of it as YA... Well, that is a very humorous book and worth reading.

message 113: by Misty (last edited Aug 08, 2009 11:48AM) (new)

Misty | 1505 comments I didn't think of it as YA either. But still, good list. They sound interesting, at least.

message 114: by Lydia (new)

Lydia (loverofinformation) | 596 comments Misty wrote: "What I did was googled "Young adult author + [first name:]" and saw what came up."

Thanks, Misty -- I'll try that!

message 115: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (JenJen1221) | 623 comments So I kinda don't wanna buy a new book from the humour genre, but my mom just bought me Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging Confessions of Georgia Nicolson. So does anyone recommend this book for me to read?

message 116: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (pbear77sf) I have been very interested in the challenges but I am not quite sure how they work. Am I suppose to come up with a book that fits each sections sub catagories? I am really interested in doing this but want to make sure I am doing it right. I have see so many good books listed in posts that I am excited to check into and read.

message 117: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 10, 2009 07:59AM) (new)

Sarah- Yes, you just come up with a book for each sub category. Some of the tasks require more than one book because they are worth more points. As you read the books on your list (which you can change as you go if you want) and finish a task, you post on the "YA Reading Challenge #2 Report Points Here " Thread which task you finished and what book you read for it. On some of the tasks, there are discussions required in order to get the points. For more details take a look at the first post of this Thread with rules and task descriptions. Hope you have fun!

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) What if the people from goodreads who have been pushing me to read a book, haven't been pushing me to read a YA book?

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) I have a lot of questions :(.

message 120: by [deleted user] (new)

All of these books have to be YA unless otherwise stated.

Can anyone push a YA book on Sarah please?? :)

I will push The Graveyard Book, Graceling, and The Hunger Games. If you haven't read one of these, I highly recommend all of them!

message 121: by [deleted user] (new)

What other questions do you have?

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) This is my first challenge. I wasn't in the last one because I had some family events take place. So my question is, what should I do for the first section when it asks you to read a book that stood out to me in the last challenge. Thanks!

message 123: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments Look through and see what people read. You don't have to have participated in the first challenge. Instead of comparing it to what you read the first time (since you didn't), say why it stood out to you and whether you liked it/think it's a good fit for that challenge.

message 124: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you Misty.

Sarah, that is exactly what you would do. Is there anything else you need help with?

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) How could I say it's good fit for the challenge or not? Aren't they all good fits?

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) Also does anyone know where I can get a list of YA-authors by first name? Thanks.

message 127: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (pbear77sf) Linda Grace - Thanks for the help. This looks like it will be fun, and a great excuse to read all the books on my shelves that I just have not gotten to yet.

message 128: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (pbear77sf) Anyone have a genre recommendation for task 4.20? My reading habits are kind of eclectic so there are not a lot of geners I have never read before.

message 129: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 10, 2009 03:21PM) (new)

Sarah wrote: "How could I say it's good fit for the challenge or not? Aren't they all good fits?"

Just say if you would have read that book for the task it was read for.

Sarah wrote: "Also does anyone know where I can get a list of YA-authors by first name? Thanks."

I believe we were just googling Young Adult Author + [whatever name you need to find:]. I am assuming you are looking for Sarah because the only task you need the author's first name for is where the author's name matches your own... I know of Sarah Dessen. If I find a list, I will post it.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) No, I was talking about Section 2 # 15

message 131: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh of course... I got 2.15 and 2.5 mixed up! Oopsie. Okay, well I can get a list of authors and reorganize it to be alphabetized, but I don't know if it would fit here. I will try it.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) I'm sorry to be such a bother. But I'm not sure what to do for 4.15 and 4.20.

Is there anyone that loves Sci-Fi or Historical Fiction?

Ashley (affie) | 468 comments Sarah wrote: "I'm sorry to be such a bother. But I'm not sure what to do for 4.15 and 4.20.

Sarah, if you want a Historical Fiction rec, I strongly recommend Ann Rinaldi. I read her in Jr. High, and I love her. My favorites are Time Enough For Drums, The Last Silk Dress, A Break with Charity, and The Fifth of March. I have really liked every book I've read by her, except one... (I didn't love Or Give Me Death...)
I reccommend all of them!

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) Thanks Ashley!

A. (aekirk) | 16 comments Okay, I know it's late and I'm tired, and I'm late into this challenge, but where is this YA List I'm supposed to look at and get participating in this?

message 137: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments I assume you're talking about the Top YA Novels list, which is here.

The Award Winners list is in the folder about awards...

message 138: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (JenJen1221) | 623 comments I finished task 2.15. I read Huck Finn by Mark Twain. I lived with my big brother, Mark, when we were kids, I moved in with him my junior & senior year in high school, & I live with him when I'm in California.

Great to have you join Alyssa! If you have any other questions just let us know!

Sarah wrote: "I'm sorry to be such a bother. But I'm not sure what to do for 4.15"

Don't worry about it. We are here to help and have fun! :) For 4.15, I would suggest going into a library or bookstore and seeing what they have in the ADULT section that you think would be good classified as YA. I know we have mentioned that The Book of Lost Things is ADULT, but a lot of people read it for YA.

Also, are you still having trouble with 2.15? I have a list, it's just really long to post (10 pages) and it's one I created so I can't just post a link to it. Message me with an e-mail address if you would like me to send you my list. Or you could just tell me a couple names and I can look them up for you. Just let me know! :)

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) Linda, are we including pet names as well?

If so, the names that I am looking for are Jill, Mark, Oliver (cat)

message 141: by [deleted user] (new)

I think pet names are okay. The task says someone in your household, not some person! :)

Here is what I come up with for those names:

Mark Twain
Mark Childress
Mark Haddon
Mark Shulman

I don't see anything for Jill or Oliver, does anyone know of someone I am missing?

message 144: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) yeah. Its all about Anne. <3

message 145: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) I finally found another L.M. Montgomery book at the used bookstore last night! I was stoked...first one I've ever found besides the Anne series. Its Magic for Marigold

message 146: by Liz (new)

Liz Misty wrote: "You fit Anne on, that's all that matters..."

I've read it once before, but I was a bit young for it, so I look forward to reading it again!

I've read a couple of the non-Anne books, but never this one. I don't remember the ones I did read all too well...
