Feral Sins (The Phoenix Pack, #1) by Suzanne Wright

Feral Sins by Suzanne Wright
finished: 6/8/14
★★★★

Well this book was a wonderful surprise. There were a couple parts at about the 2/3rds mark where it dragged a little bit, otherwise though, this book was really enjoyable. Taryn is a latent wolf who lost her true mate as a young child. Trey is a borderline feral Alpha wolf needing a temporary mate to produce allies as his uncle begins to challenge him and his pack. Neither wolf grew up with a lot of affection due to different issues in their pasts. As the story went on, the two have to figure out what they will do when their temporary arrangement is done. In addition to the romance story line, there was a lot of funny moments between Taryn and the other pack mates which was great for me.

Book: Hope and Vengeance by Connie Suttle
Shelf: Week 4 - Supefied
Finished: 6/11/2014
Pages: 282
Rating: 4 Stars
Review:

This is the first book in the Saa Thalarr spinoff series. This book actually appears to take place prior to many of the events in the other three Connie Suttle series but occurs in the same universe(s). Without much spoilery as I can possibly give... This follows Adam Chessman, the Chief Enforcer of the Vampire Council. Adam is special because his vampire gift of "misting" is a rare skill that only a few vampires posses. He is sent to investigate murders in Texas that appear to be rogue vampire related. He soon discovers that there is another world far beyond the boundaries of the "vampire world" and his knowledge of the universe is very very small. And it comes with a love interest Anna, a fellow detective working on disappearances of locals. Anna is actually Kiarra, member of the Saa Thalarr and her world is unfolded to Adam as they fight a much greater evil than rouge vampires.

This is one of my serial book addictions. I think you either love it or hate it... I started with Blood Wager of the Blood Destiny series and 22 books later she is still on my "must read" author list. (Please ignore the bad cover art). The stories can be confusing because of all the characters and the complicated and entangled relationships they have. This book was a little refreshing because all the other characters are not involved or referenced, but the characters in this book have already been introduced in the previous series but further into the future. Theme of good vs evil that starts off as a simple Vampire / Shifter series that quickly goes into the Fantasy realm. The heroines and females in general are rare so they have multiple mates which might not be everyone's cuppa. It has these crazy plots and storylines that are always grounded with simple tasks of eating, sleeping and other normal functions. The other series are HIGH DEMON and GOD WARS, but I think someone could start off reading this without all the back stories.

Warrior's Bride (The Stones of Destiny, #2) by Gerri Russell

Finished 6/10/14
Rating: 3.5 stars
Review:

I haven't read a historical in a while. They have become rare for me now that I'm solidly a PNR/UF reader. I chose this book strictly because the cover met the requirement for this week and because I got it for free and I like using freebies for BSB.

So I started reading without reading the blurb and was pleasantly surprised to find a book that was historical but has pnr elements. This story features our couple, the Seer's Stone, and antagonists that are trying to get a hold of the stone which can predict the future.

This book featured one of my favorite themes: a hero who is determined to do the bare minimum for a forced marriage and eventually succumbs to love by the little things. In this case there are little things, there are multiple attempts on our heroine's life because she has half of the seer's stone.

Speaking of our heroine, I really like Izzy. She was a bit youngish but that's commonplace in historicals. She has an interesting history of really bad things happening to her and it was good to see that she still had some sass without becoming one of those heroines that are super mean. She has her defiant moments but she is still smart and resourceful.

Since Wolf's personality fell under one of my favorite motifs, I really enjoyed him too. He was fierce and loyal and tried to be hardhearted but hey it's romance we all know where that was going to go.

While I enjoyed the story, the plot was decent, nothing spectacular. I just have to deduct half a star for the pages of inner dialog. I mean you can tell me that Izzy chose not to dine with Wolf. You can show me why. What I don't need is a page and a half of random tangent stuff that leads back to the fact that she chose not to dine with him. It slowed the story down for me. Other than that, I would continue the series. I think have another book in the series free so it'll be a click away!

A Blood Seduction (Vamp City, #1) by Pamela Palmer

Finished 6/11/14
Rating 4 stars

Review:

Man this book was dark.

And I liked it!

These vampires are not nice. Not romantic. Not anything that I've been used to since reading about the humane side of vampirism.

These are creatures of the night, predators, vamps that view people as playthings, food, pets, etc. There are some scenes that are just like damn, it's hard to read that.

Our heroine, Quinn, has been having some weird stuff happening to her lately. Like she drives through these pockets of magic that only she can see and everything she touches/is wearing will change color. Cool visualization. She keeps having visions of a place in the past but mixed with the future.

Folks are disappearing all over DC and Quinn's brother's friend ends up being one of those. Quinn and brother go on a search from which they slip into the work of Washington V.C. that's right. V.C. Vamp City. We meet who I can only loosely call a hero named Arturo who is apparently the nicest evil vamp as in he is nice to Quinn... others not so much. And even still that niceness that a very low limit as Arturo betrays Quinn I can't count how many times.

I don't know if I liked Quinn...I'm on the fence. I understand she did things to save her brother but...I don't know. Quinn was attracted and acted on the attraction to Arturo no matter how awful he was to her. Even though he would be nice after doing really deceitful things. Also despite the cover, Quinn is not kickass, the cover is deceitful. Arturo must have made it!

I do want to read the next book in the series but I think I need some time to process the darkness of this vamp world. Though I like it, I don't know if I can read it back to back.

Magic Breaks (Kate Daniels, #7) by Ilona Andrews - 5 stars

I've realized just how much I missed one of my favorite "supefied" couples - Kate and Curran. In fact, I spent quite a bit of time missing His Royal Furriness for a good part of the book. No worries, fans will not be disappointed. The first half of this book had a lot of politicking. Interesting to see how Kate has progressed on that front. The last half of the book was action packed, an exhilarating ride. Fans are in for a real treat. Kate is just awesome.

My Life as a White Trash Zombie (White Trash Zombie, #1) by Diana Rowland
Date Finished: 6/13
Rating - 4 stars

What an enjoyable read! At first I was very maybe about this book and only got it because it was on sale at Audible. But wow! It was a fun ride.

Angel is your classic loser. Pill popping, getting drunk, high school drop out who wakes up day in the hospital and after a few days and a mysterious job offer in the morgue, starts to crave brains.

It was great to see Angel's progression of being a character who doesn't see her own value or worth, does not take care of herself, generally does not care about anything to taking this second chance that was thrust upon her and starting completely over.

As far as the story went, I enjoyed the mystery however it was not the main point of the story. The story very much is about the life of a white trash zombie. She tells us about her experience, her background, things she's dealing with. I would have appreciated a little more plot or a little more focus on the mystery but I think this is a great start to this series. I'm definitely reading/listening to the next one!

Bons baisers du vampire (Love at Stake, #1) by Kerrelyn Sparks by Kerrelyn Sparks
Read: June 13th
Rating: 3 Stars
Review:

Roman Dragnesti, a vampire master with a broken fang, is in dire need of a dentist. Enter Shanna Whelan in hiding after testifying against the Russian Mafia and suffering from an intense blood phobia. With hit men and bloodthirsty vampires after her, Shanna has no choice but to accept help from Roman and his sexy security detail.

The world building and characters are very appealing, but could have been fleshed out better. The romance is sweet and the writing is humorous at times. That said, the overall effect is one of silly campiness with contrived situations and several obvious plot holes.

I'll probably give the next book a try as the sexy highlanders have potential as does the Malcontent storyline.

Poison Promise (Elemental Assassin, #11) by Jennifer Estep - 4 stars

It's not often that a series gets better and better with each subsequent book. Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assassins series is one such series. Reading Poison Promise (book 11!!!) was like reconnecting with old friends. I love the world that this author has built. The town of Ashland is corrupt, its officials are on the take, the bad guys are vying to fill in a power vacuum - this is one interesting place. In the center of it all stands Gin Blanco, aka The Spider, a very efficient assassin and an even better cook.

This book was filled with non-stop action. Gin is one kick-ass assassin. I could not put this book down.
(I'm trying to keep this as spoiler-free as possible)

Hope Flames (Hope #1) by Jaci Burton by Jaci Burton
Read: June 17th
Rating: 2 Stars
Review:

Settling into her new life as a small town vet and recovering from an abusive relationship, Emma Burnett isn’t interested in romance until Officer Luke McCormick walks into the clinic. Luke isn’t looking for anything more than a casual fling, but Emma soon begins to mean more to him. Will Luke and Emma be able to overcome their personal demons to be together…

Despite likable characters and a plot with definite potential, the story and writing just do not live up to the sexiness of the cover.

Emma and Luke are a cute couple and their romance is relatively free of angst. Unfortunately, the pacing is too slow and the dialogue is rather stilted. The townsfolk and pets are quite charming but something is missing to make them truly exceptional.

The small suspense plot is completely superfluous and adds nothing to either the characters or the story.

There is nothing special about this book and I doubt that I will continue with the series.
