Linda B.D. (lindabd) Is there any type of WWll involving a love story in it that would add a lot to a book. It doesn't matter if it's about concentration camps or just a story. I'm looking for a real true story, including love or a close family takes place during this time. Not a total political book. Thank You, Linda

Eric Layton (vtel57) | 12 comments Hi Linda,

A quick search led me to these three. I can't personal recommend them because I haven't read them, but they seem to be somewhat along the lines of what you're searching for...

All on Account of You: A True WWII Love Story

Dearest Ones: A True World War II Love Story

Treasures in My Heart: A True WWII Love Story

Hope that helped a bit...

Linda B.D. (lindabd) It is a shame that most of the Southern books were destroyed, during fire/raids. We could have learned a lot from them! I love a good true romance during the Civil War. If you know of any, please contact me or post them here. Most books I've found are about the north.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) I moved this request from Brian from another thread.

All of my Civil War reading to date has been Shelby Foote and Bruce Catton. I'm considering picking up a few books by Dowdey. Can anyone advise?

Shelby Foote Shelby Foote
Bruce Catton Bruce Catton

message 777: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Brian, I have not read anything by him, probably because his works are older, dating back to the mid-1940s, then 1950s.

Perhaps another member can help.

Clifford Dowdey Clifford Dowdey

Adult, just shy of an all out textbook.

message 783: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) This classic of the history of civilization is not an easy read and is several volumes but might be what you are looking for. The book cited below is just one of the series.

message 786: by Matthew (last edited Oct 03, 2014 08:09PM) (new)

Matthew Looking for a good overview book of the American Revolutionary War period. I am nearly done reading The Glorious Cause, by Robert Middlekauff.

The Glorious Cause: The American Revolution, 1763-1789
The Glorious Cause The American Revolution, 1763-1789 by Robert Middlekauff

I am finding it to be a "bad overview book" of the American Revolutionary War period, even though it's in the presigious "Oxford" series, for the following reasons:

1. If I were going by the book, I would assume that between 1776 and 1783 nothing happened other than Washington and his generals made various decisions about fighting the British, and won and lost a large number of battles. It appears that if there was not a battle imminent, the rest of America did not exist and no one did anything unless it was to explicitly help or hinder George Washington.

2. Even though I assume he is accurately describing the battles, I am getting no sense for the actual strategy anyone was using on either side. It reads like the story of two chess novices trying to checkmate each other with a king and two knights each. The British care a lot about Boston, right up until the moment that they don't care about Boston anymore. There's going to be a batle for New York, until Washington decides he's going to withdraw from New York. Then the British are in New York and decide they don't want to be there any more. Etc. It's all a description of battles, with minimal descriptions or analysis of strategies.

Any recommendations of books that cover the same subject as "The Glorious Cause," but does it better?

message 787: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) You might try this one, Matthew. There are several books with this title, so check the author as opposed to the title.

Our Lives, Our Fortunes, and Our Sacred Honor The Forging of American Independence, 1774-1776 by Richard Beeman by Richard Beeman

message 788: by Bryan (last edited Oct 06, 2014 07:22AM) (new)

Bryan Craig This is a hard one, Matthew, because the book you read is rare. Most histories drill down to specific areas of concentration like military, political, diplomatic or social contexts.

You could try these that I ran across:

Washington A Life by Ron Chernow by Ron Chernow Ron Chernow

Washington's Crossing by David Hackett Fischer by David Hackett Fischer David Hackett Fischer

George Washington's War The Saga of the American Revolution by Robert Leckie by Robert Leckie Robert Leckie

The American Revolution by Bruce Lancaster by Bruce Lancaster Bruce Lancaster
