Is there any type of WWll involving a love story in it that would add a lot to a book. It doesn't matter if it's about concentration camps or just a story. I'm looking for a real true story, including love or a close family takes place during this time. Not a total political book. Thank You, Linda

Hi Linda,A quick search led me to these three. I can't personal recommend them because I haven't read them, but they seem to be somewhat along the lines of what you're searching for...
All on Account of You: A True WWII Love Story
Dearest Ones: A True World War II Love Story
Treasures in My Heart: A True WWII Love Story
Hope that helped a bit...

Thank you ERic! I put them on my to read list".
It is a shame that most of the Southern books were destroyed, during fire/raids. We could have learned a lot from them! I love a good true romance during the Civil War. If you know of any, please contact me or post them here. Most books I've found are about the north.

I've just read Gutenberg's Apprentice: A Novel by Alix Christie and was wondering if anyone could recomend a non fiction book about Gutenberg and the invention of the printing press. Thanks in advance!
Hi Kathryn. Great try on the citation, just use the book cover and author photo. Here is a more scholarly account of Gutenberg:

Alix Christie
You might try this one, Kathryn.Fire in the City: Savonarola and the Struggle for Renaissance Florence
by Lauro Martines (no photo)
Michael, you should check out some of Tom Clancy's lesser known classics like "The Cardinal of the Kremlin" and "Red Storm Rising."

I moved this request from Brian from another thread. All of my Civil War reading to date has been Shelby Foote and Bruce Catton. I'm considering picking up a few books by Dowdey. Can anyone advise?
Shelby Foote
Bruce Catton
Brian, I have not read anything by him, probably because his works are older, dating back to the mid-1940s, then 1950s.Perhaps another member can help.
Clifford Dowdey
Not familiar with Dowdey, but I do recommend and have enjoyed James M. McPherson and Stephen W. Sears:

I have seen very good reviews on the "history of the World" comprises of 3 volumes, by Susan Wise Bauer. Though not illustrated it is a very easy read. There are some available in amazon; hope this helps. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_nos...

Adult, just shy of an all out textbook.
This classic of the history of civilization is not an easy read and is several volumes but might be what you are looking for. The book cited below is just one of the series.

Looking for a good overview book of the American Revolutionary War period. I am nearly done reading The Glorious Cause, by Robert Middlekauff. The Glorious Cause: The American Revolution, 1763-1789
I am finding it to be a "bad overview book" of the American Revolutionary War period, even though it's in the presigious "Oxford" series, for the following reasons:
1. If I were going by the book, I would assume that between 1776 and 1783 nothing happened other than Washington and his generals made various decisions about fighting the British, and won and lost a large number of battles. It appears that if there was not a battle imminent, the rest of America did not exist and no one did anything unless it was to explicitly help or hinder George Washington.
2. Even though I assume he is accurately describing the battles, I am getting no sense for the actual strategy anyone was using on either side. It reads like the story of two chess novices trying to checkmate each other with a king and two knights each. The British care a lot about Boston, right up until the moment that they don't care about Boston anymore. There's going to be a batle for New York, until Washington decides he's going to withdraw from New York. Then the British are in New York and decide they don't want to be there any more. Etc. It's all a description of battles, with minimal descriptions or analysis of strategies.
Any recommendations of books that cover the same subject as "The Glorious Cause," but does it better?
You might try this one, Matthew. There are several books with this title, so check the author as opposed to the title.
by Richard Beeman
This is a hard one, Matthew, because the book you read is rare. Most histories drill down to specific areas of concentration like military, political, diplomatic or social contexts. You could try these that I ran across:
by
Ron Chernow
by
David Hackett Fischer
by
Robert Leckie
by
Bruce Lancaster
by
Thomas J. Fleming
Actually, I'd like a few LISTS of great book AUTHORS who have written about the American Revolutionary period.
Also, David and Matthew, go ahead and check out our two American Revolution topics to see what you can find:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Military:

While the debate was interesting, I'd really like several readers' LISTS of authors who have written well on the Revolutionary period, anything from 1760 - 1800 and a bit beyond. Thanks!
David: In addition to
David Hackett Fischerand
John Ferlingwho should be on anyone's list- I add the following historians:
Gordon S. Wood
Bernard Bailyn
Pauline Maier
Edmund S. Morgan
Jack P. Greene
Thanks John,I actually have not read three! of your authors, so many thanks!
Anyone else? I have not been a history nut all my life, it is somewhat recent, so please don't assume I have read the authors you like best.
David
David, from my years working in the field, if I saw these authors on the shelf, I would read them:
Forrest McDonald
Jack N. RakoveDon Higginbotham (no photo)
John Chester Miller (no photo)
Willard Sterne Randall (no photo)
Ralph Louis Ketcham (no photo)
Eric FonerJames Thomas Flexner (no photo)
Joyce Appleby
Joseph J. EllisJoanne B. Freeman (no photo)
Hope it helps and enjoy.
