All the best with pharmacy school Eric. I can imagine how busy it is going to be for you.

Scott, do you have any book recommendations for the ones you've read with your daughter that you think boys would like as well? I struggle to find books for my son that he enjoys. He's 12 but an advanced reader, so can read anything, but it's more looking for age appropriate books that he'll enjoy. He really enjoyed the Cherub series by Robert Muchamore and gave Harry Potter a go again and enjoyed it second time around.

What's he like? Does he mind/like female leads?

Male leads that she and I have read that we both liked.

A Darker Shade of Magic
Steelheart
Second Cataclysm
Dawn of Wonder

Some adult books I would let my daughter read that I think a boy would like.

Wheel of time series.
Ryeria series.
A Crucible of Souls
The Aeronaut's Windlass

Thanks Scott! I really appreciate the recommendations.

He tends to like books with a bit of a war / spies / mystery focus over straight out fantasy.

Prefers a male lead over female.

You should read Shadow Campaigns and see what you think about the content. There's really nothing too bad for sex or language and war is war there is violence but it's not as graphic as some other books.

Dani | 577 comments Okay is there anyone out there who can tell me which series I should be reading first of Brent Weeks: the Lightbringer or the Nightangel series?

GR people have graded each book in the Lightbringer series higher but the premise of the Nightangel series appeals a tad more to me, I must say.

Any helpful thoughts?

I read Night Angel first and I think it's a good introduction to his work.

Night Angel for sure. I like it more than Lightbringer. Well by a small fraction and it was the first one I read.

I also liked it a little bit more than Lightbringer. :)

message 162: by Dani (new)

Dani | 577 comments Thanks for the input, guys! I'm gonna go ahead and read the Night Angel series first then. It'll have to wait quite a bit now though, because last week I decided to squeeze in the Riyria Revelations THIS year because I came across a really good book deal for the whole series and couldn't resist buying them. Of course, this means my reading schedule is now completely out the window, but then I decided something completely out of character.. I decided not to stress about it!

Just sometimes I wonder why it is that buying neither clothes nor shoes give me that same shiny happy feeling buying precioussss books do. I must not be normal. :-)

Kelly V | 2 comments Hey everyone, I hope you're all doing well :). I'm getting ready for the 2017 GOODREADS READING CHALLENGE. I was wondering, can I reread books I've read before during this challenge? Also, I want to read some creative writing books. Are they allowed? Sorry for the dumb questions, this is going to be my first challenge. Have a good night and God bless :).

Yes it will count books you've already read, if you change the date read or add a different edition and any book that is listed on Goodreads counts, so if your creative writing books are on Goodreads they count. Even short stories will count.

I'm picking up the 12 year old at skating and I go to use the men's room when a child opens the door going in before me. The child is roughly the size of my 6 year old daughter and has nearly the same length hair down, long. I glance up quickly to make sure the sign says Men's.

In micro-seconds I process:

1. Do I say do you know this is the men's room?
2. Do I just walk in after the child?
3. Do I act like I really wasn't going in there after-all?

The child glances back at me and I of course freeze for another micro-second and then for some god only knows reason actually utter the prolific "ahhhhh" OMG you dumb ass!

The child says "I'm a boy." Just shoot me.

"I'm so sorry"
"It's ok it happens all the time."
"Well nonetheless I'm sorry."
"I've grown to think it's funny."
"Well at least you have a good sense of humor about it"

My daughter comes off the ice and I'm still laughing at myself and I proceed to tell her the story and everybody at home and they all have good laughs, so all of you might as well too.

I laughed, mostly cause I was that kid who had a mushroom cut cause I wouldn't brush my hair, and super big square glasses so I got called a boy all the time, I'd laugh about it too

I just had a random memory..

Not long ago we had a family function at my Father in Law's.. let's just say he's had a few marriages so he has 6 children of his own plus step children so it's super busy when we all get together cause we have kids of our own..

He was looking for a spot to sit and eat his food and I heard him say "well... I screwed myself out of a spot at the dinner table" and went and sat on the floor to eat..

I'm just sayin' Scott. I'm just sayin'

On that topic....old people will say anything because they know nobody will call them out on it. If I make it that far imagine what I'll say then considering I'm holding back now. :)

Quinn | 460 comments Is there such as too many books? I just realized that my "library" is overflowed with the books when I was trying to "organize."

Peeking though the tiny gap of the door to the library. A book fell off the bookcase.
Gently closed the door and walked away....

The end......
