When You're Not Reading a Cozy . . .
Just finished
Cop Hater by Ed McBain. Great start to one of the great series in mystery fiction. Cops functioning in the pre-cell phone, pre-computer era.
Desperate Girls by Laura Griffin 5-StarsGreat start to a new series

Finally on the last chapter! I thought this book would never end. I think part of the problem with this one is that it gets bogged down in the technical jargon, especially scientific names for what is seen, As well as degrees longitude and latitude. I couldn't help wondering if I would have more enjoyed an abridged children's version. 😐

Heather L. I totally agree. All the scientific names and the navigation references really make this a chore to read. I've never thought of reading a children's version. That probably would have helped.

I have to agree. I think, if I didn't speed read through the technical information on the sea life, I might have been tempted not to finish this one. But having said that I really enjoyed Journey to the Center of the Earth and I find it fascinating that Jules Verne was writing these wonderful tales in the middle to late 1800s. He had a very practical imagination!
Journey to the Centre of the Earth was okay. Read a lot faster than this one -- for one, not as much scientific data. There were entire passages in "Twenty-Thousand" that I skipped over due to lists of fish in their Latin names -- which did not tell me what they were.
Now reading Hatchet by Gary Paulsen for a book with a plane.

Nearing the end of
Saint Camber by Katherine Kurtz. The old covers are way better than the recent generic covers.Recently started
Guardians of the West by David Eddings. Sadly not available for purchase in E book format in the US. Good thing I have the series in hardcover. Also have
Swords and Deviltry by Fritz Leiber in the currently reading stack. Another case of the older edition having a better cover.
Finished Hatchet -- it was so good I couldn't put it down and ended up staying up late Tues night to finish.

I don't read many books of this genre, but admit I enjoyed a couple of Vince Flynn's. A tragedy he died so young.
Definitely not a cozy, but if you are looking for something darker, I highly recommend
Chasing Darkness by Robert Crais
I'm reading FANNY NEWCOMB & THE IRISH CHANNEL RIPPER by Ana Brazil. Crime in New Orleans in the late 1800s, and I'm really enjoying the story and the characters.Fanny Newcomb And the Irish Channel Ripper

I find that Robert Crais' early books are very uneven. He's definitely gotten better as he's gone along.
These are both just a shade off of cozy. I'm listing them here, but some might still consider them cozies.
Room for Doubt by Nancy Cole Silverman
Lost Luggage by Wendall Thomas
I've just started reading Seduce Me at Sunrise by Lisa Kleypas and listening to Black and Blue by Ian Rankin

I finished The Bookshop which was an okay read and very short. I'm in the middle of The Alice Network and really enjoying it.
