Crazy how there's sooo many serious teams too!

message 652: by Abi (new)

Abi (abi_gr) | 27659 comments I didn't get to do the medium/fun scores at the time I usually do them, which is why the the scoreboard wasn't updated yesterday. I've been having internet issues this morning, so I'm only just getting around to updating the scores, so the leaderboard won't be up for those teams until I'm finished.

Eesh (quirkyopinions) | 7289 comments Tati wrote: "I'm really liking how unpredictable the leaderboard is!"

Yeah! Usually, there are one or two teams that are above the others. This time, who know what's gonna happen?

message 667: by Tati (new)

Tati Of course, there might be players withholding reviews, so they can dump 4 or 5 thousand pages in a single post and change the whole board.

I think we all think that a review dump is coming.

message 669: by Tati (new)

Tati the review dumps from hell LOL

message 670: by Tati (new)

Tati to be honest, I don't like review dumps. They are a lot of work to the mods to go through, and they're a bit blindsiding for other teams.

message 671: by Eesh (new)

Eesh (quirkyopinions) | 7289 comments They are definitely something to be feared. They can flip the whole game.

message 672: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) I'm not going to lie, I hate review dumps, it really in my opinion makes you going through the trouble of putting up these boards every day a waste of your time.
I always wonder if it is strategy or not, because it isn't that difficult to get your reviews posted in a timely manner.
Maybe, it is just going up playing sports, you always knew what the score was going into the end of the game.
But, it is what it is, and it happens month after month after month

message 673: by Meaghan (new)

Meaghan (ectophine) | 3596 comments Sometimes people really can't get to a computer though. I've had small review dumps of 2-3 books from time to time, and I know some people on my group had testing, and were able to read, but not take the time to do the reviews. I think in most cases there's usually a good reason for them

message 674: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) You can do your views without a computer, you can do them on your phone, and if you have enough time to read, I'm sorry you have enough time to write your reviews.
I just think it takes a little fun out of the competition, that is just my opinion, and I've been doing these challenges longer then a lot of you, I've been here from the very beginning of these team challenges, me and a couple others, who unfortunately now are doing solo due to some of these things going on.
Also, I was just stating it because it bugs me, and it's not even worth arguing about, because it is what it is and it is always going to be.
I can completely understand having a couple reviews to post at a time, I myself I'm going to need to do that today, just because I've had a crazy weekend, and honestly I forgot about it last night, but there have been people that have posted over 10 or more reviews in a day,, It is just frustrating to me, maybe it isn't anybody else, but it is to me.

message 675: by Meaghan (new)

Meaghan (ectophine) | 3596 comments It's wayyy harder to do it from your phone though, in my opinion, since so many different things need to be linked, and books added. And the app (atleast the apple app) doesn't let you do that. But there's also cases of no internet, or no access to a computer, and in that case, reviews are tough, but reading is not, since reading requires neither of those things

True

message 677: by Meaghan (new)

Meaghan (ectophine) | 3596 comments Yea that's right Victoria! And for the actually posting the reviews to the review thread, that's impossible to do through the app as well. Writing the review is one thing, and posting is another, and both have the possibility to be difficult and put off for various reasons.

However, I do disagree for review dumps being done for a strategical reason, as it really isn't fair on the mods or the other teams. I just feel sometimes it can't be helped

That's why Sarah and Abbie usually have a page count or review cap at the end of the month. Not only is it easier for them not having to wade through dozens of reviews. But it encourages people to keep up with their reviews as much as possible. :D

message 679: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Well, I only use my phone, either on the app or in my browser, and I have an iPhone.
All I'm saying it is the same people that do this every month, so it is never going to change, and I can't believe these people every single month don't have the opportunity to get to a computer, that is just how I feel.
I also didn't feel as though you were trying to engage me in an argument, I was just saying it isn't even worth arguing about, maybe that doesn't even make sense, sorry it is early in the morning :-)

I'm probably just imagining it. There have been instances in the past where there has been a cap. So now I just expect that every month. :/

message 686: by Abby (new)

Abby | 5404 comments I'm such a procrastinator that I have to do my reviews immediately as well, or else they'd never get done! To each their own, I guess, though.

message 687: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) I think they did have a 1000 page limit, but people complained they weren't allowed to read over 1000 pages in a day, LOL!

message 688: by Meaghan (new)

Meaghan (ectophine) | 3596 comments Yea I remember that time Berit! I believe the last cap I saw was February, and a ton started complaining near the end. I think the only case the cap isn't fair is when someone's book is over 1000 pages (like many GOT books), and even though it's only one book they're turning in, they're losing pages because it's the end of the month. Besides that, I think caps at the end of month are rather smart, because otherwise so many would just wait to the end, even if they could do the reviews earlier

message 689: by Abby (new)

Abby | 5404 comments If it's a single book that's over 1000 pages, they count them all. I've been in that situation where I read a large one over the course of the month and finished towards the end. I'll be doing that again this time as well.

message 690: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (boombaby13) | 4239 comments This discussion really just comes down to common courtesy or the term I've been seeing a lot lately "adulting". Holding onto to many and dumping them all at once is a bit rude to the mods and the others in the challenge whether it's strategy or not. Sure, someone could have internet issues but that shouldn't be a ton of people all at once and if it were the case then post about it so the mods can be prepared. It really just comes down to plain good manners to keep up on your reviews to not put all the work on the mods all at once any time during the month. A lot of the quicker readers probably do multiple every day as it is so adding in a bunch of others dumping is probably a pain to keep track of.

message 691: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Thank you! It does just come down to common courtesy.

message 692: by Meaghan (new)

Meaghan (ectophine) | 3596 comments That is definitely true, we shouldn't be seeing as many review dumps as we do. Sometimes people can't help it, but there shouldn't be that many people that always do them, because there's no way so many people have the issues needed to cause a review dump at once.

message 693: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 12271 comments I understand a few days where you didn't get the chance to get reviews in, but when you jump on and are posting 10-20 review going back 2-3 weeks that is where I get frustrated.
Especially when they are active in chat or buddy reads. And it you can type to chat on forum threads, you can type up a review. If you want to add links or more details later you can. I often post " *Review in Progress* " Across the top of mine for this reason. That way I can get me few sentences done for these challenges but can always go back and add or correct as needed.
It really comes down to courtesy. Partly for other teams but especially our Mods. The last week is crazy busy for them. They have to be more on adding scores, adjusting them. Checking reviews, book editions, buddy reads.
Plus they are creating new teams for the new challenge, Answering last minute questions and adding books to the monthly BR calendar. And the is always exploding with activity the last week of the month.
They should be able to relax and read too. So it would be nice to see readers not stashing away a ton of books. It is one thing to add a couple days worth at a time (for most of us that would be maybe 2-6 books). It is another to dump over half the month at the same time.

message 694: by Irene (new)

Irene (raenne) | 4856 comments I think it's about how much one reads as well. In those months where I read 20 books, I might do review dumps. I just can't be bothered to turn on my computer, when all I want to do is read. And knowing myself, I know I'll just end up spending an hour, two, three or more on doing nothing on social media. I prefer reading oer that. So yes. Sometimes I'm posting 4-5 reviews at once, going back one week. I try to let my team know whether that's the case or not, so they know what they can expect from me.
In a month like this one, I'm posting my reviews soon after I finish the books, because I don't really read too much.

That being said, I definitely wouldn't be posting 20 reviews at the end of the month - unless I read that much over the course of a weekend lol.

message 695: by Connie (new)

Connie (sunstormsandthunderclouds) | 3978 comments Coming from someone who has had to do a review dump this month, I think that if there are circumstances that do warrant it, for example, I don't like reviewing on my phone. It's awkward for me. But mine haven't been strategic, simply because I have a lot of stuff happening at once!

message 696: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 12271 comments Oh, and for those that are particular about reviews (which I can understand) do status updates instead. Especially useful if you are doing a buddy read. Comment on the BR, update book progress and leave a quick comment. Some of mine are very simple like "I can't believe X just did that!" 4 updates count as a review! I do this all the time when I don't have a chunk of time to write a review or I want to do it a certain way.

4-5 isn't too bad. Even more potentially in this challenge. It is the person who posts say 10 books totaling 4000 pages and 8 being buddy reads that have me throwing up my hands in frustration. (Please note those numbers are just an example)

In this challenge, if someone is reading a bunch of short stories or graphic novels, they might post a large number of reviews, but it isn't an insane number of pages.

It is the game changer dumps that hurt. Many are pushing themselves in the last week to try. But when one or two people dump enough to get 15-30 points instantly, or enough to put them safely in first that is when it is not so cool because it says the others never really had much chance.

Again these are just my general opinions, not an attack on someone.

message 698: by Ashley W (last edited May 24, 2016 10:16AM) (new)

Ashley W (starfallreads1) | 6011 comments The first couple weeks I posted as quickly as possible, nearly every day, then my computer killed over on me, so I've dumped a couple times. Getting it back later today though. I snagged someone's computer just now. :)

But I don't get why anyone would do that as a strategy? You're not reading any more pages that way, so why would it matter whether you post as you go or all at once?

message 699: by Tati (new)

Tati If you don't post your reviews, your points are not counted, and the other teams assume they are on a certain position on the leaderboard. Then, you come along and dump an amount of reviews that flips the whole thing. We've had it happen before. A team (don't remember the challenge nor the team) was sure to win on the last hours of the challenge. Then, someone did a massive review post, and that team ended up being second place.

message 700: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

We had someone who posted 33 reviews in the last hour of the challenge once.
