Jane (PS) | 24343 comments Week 1

Theme:
7 - Read the first book of a new (to you) series
Option 2 key date: 27 November 2013 (must be rated at least 3 stars, and you can't go back further than this 'date read' if you select from a team-member's bookshelf)

I'm posting a bit early 'cos I have to brand cattle this morning :)

My life is in NO way as interesting as yours!

message 54: by Tabs (new)

Tabs Question: If a book otherwise meets a week's theme, does it have to also be a romance or is that not necessarily a requirement?

message 55: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24343 comments Lol! There is no doubt that my life has a LOT of variety ;)

message 56: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24343 comments Tabs - so long as it meets the theme, it is fine to use. Although it still needs to be a novel. No text books.

message 57: by Breann (new)

Breann | 398 comments How many books need to be in the series for it to count for the theme?

message 58: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24343 comments It needs to be a series recognised by the author - so if it is on the author's page below their bio etc as a series, it will count :)

message 59: by Breann (new)

Breann | 398 comments Jane (PS) wrote: "It needs to be a series recognised by the author - so if it is on the author's page below their bio etc as a series, it will count :)"

Woohoo! Thanks, Jane :)

Jane (PS) | 24343 comments I've forgotten to mention this, but if you need to PM me for whatever reason, please PM me, Jane(PS), and not modbot...

We only hop onto that account if I (or one of the other mods) need to edit a post :) So it could be a while before anyone sees the PM.

Jane (PS) | 24343 comments Week 2

Theme:
18 - Book by an author whose first or last name starts with the letter 'J'
Option 2 key date: 4 December 2013 (must be rated at least 3 stars, and you can't go back further than this 'date read' if you select from a team-member's bookshelf)

message 62: by MountainKat, Moderator (new)

MountainKat | 31790 comments Question - If you read a book with multiple authors and at least one of them has a name that starts with J, is that acceptable? This one is the one I was looking at The Lady Most Willing...: A Novel in Three Parts.

message 63: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24343 comments That is fine Kat, but you have to read the whole book - not sure if you are talking an anthology or a co-authoring effort :)

message 64: by Diane T. (new)

Diane T. (tickledpink49) | 254 comments For this weeks, author's first or last name must start with a J, would JD Robb count?

message 65: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24343 comments JD Robb will count but middle initials or names will not :)

message 66: by MountainKat, Moderator (new)

MountainKat | 31790 comments I will be, I think each of the authors write a part but it isn't really an anthology. I listened to the first one, The Lady Most Likely...: A Novel in Three Parts, and there was no distinction between parts or for the different authors, at least in the audio.

Thanks! (Now I just have to finish the audiobook I have going!)

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 731 comments Hey, Jane!

This is a silly question, but I just want to clarify in case I run up against a difficult theme. In the rules, it says we can choose a book from the weekly theme, or...

2. Select a book from the 'READ' list of a team-mate that they read in the last 6 months AND that the team-mate rated at least 3 stars. (This essentially passing on a recommendation ;) If the book is in a series but does not match where you are up to, you may read another book from that same series.

So...if one of my teammates has read the first book in say the Psy-Changeling series (rated 3 stars/within the last six months), but I'm on book 4 in that series, I can select book 4 for the week?

Thx in advance!

message 68: by Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (last edited Jun 10, 2014 10:41AM) (new)

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 731 comments I should probably also ask if it works in reverse. If my teammate has read book 4 within the last six months, can I select book 1 even if it was read 9 months ago, based on it being a series?

message 69: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1064 comments Good question!

message 70: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24343 comments Hi Becky, that is right. You can read the next book in the series (wherever you are up to) based off one of your team-mates recently read '3 stars or more' books.

Awesome sauce! Thanks, Jane! : )

message 72: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24343 comments Hi everyone! I haven't had time this week to check everyone's posts so if any of the team captains have any concerns, could you please PM me?

Only 36+ hours to the next theme!!!

message 73: by R~wka (new)

R~wka (r-wka) | 899 comments I have a question. How is the time limit to peek a book for a theme.

message 74: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24343 comments Hmmm - I don't really understand the question Ra~Luka. Could you please rephrase it? :)

message 75: by R~wka (new)

R~wka (r-wka) | 899 comments I asked if I have time to peek a book for week 2. (sorry, I wasn't clear in my question)

message 76: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (mooselover) | 2724 comments Do you mean pick a book? I thought you were going to take the pass this week Ra - Luka?

message 77: by R~wka (last edited Jun 12, 2014 04:07AM) (new)

R~wka (r-wka) | 899 comments I didn't see so I trough I'm not... But I'd like a pass for week 2 if I can.
Thanks for fast reply :)
(And sorry for my spelling errors XD)

But I still have the question in mind... To know for next weeks, If I'm not able to connect in the day the theme is chosen what is the limit to pick it? Until the next week theme is announced? Or? And for last week?

message 78: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24343 comments Ah. Sorry for not catching on sooner.

You can select your book anytime in the week that the theme is announced; right up until the next theme is announced. You can also change the book you want to read, but again, only until the next theme is announced.

Does this help?

message 79: by R~wka (new)

R~wka (r-wka) | 899 comments Yes, thank you :)

message 80: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24343 comments Week 3

Theme:
12 - Read a book with at least 450 pages per GR
Option 2 key date: 11 December 2013 (must be rated at least 3 stars, and you can't go back further than this 'date read' if you select from a team-member's bookshelf)

There are a few rule clarifications on page length in the Q&A posts (msg 2 & 3) at the beginning of this thread, so please read them first if you have a question :)

Sorry to all those members who have just started DGabaldon's new book! But I blame the randomiser...

WOO HOO!!!! Thanks Jane!!!! Written in My Own Heart's Blood here I come !!!!!

message 82: by MountainKat, Moderator (new)

MountainKat | 31790 comments Darn randomiser - I was planning to put off Outlander until the end of the month when I had finished my other challenges!

message 83: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24343 comments I started Outlander 3 days ago - so pleased I'm not doing this challenge. Another 450+ page book would have taken out all my reading for the month!!!

I'm really slack this month on my reading. Going through a slow patch :(

MountainKat | 31790 comments Jane (PS) wrote: "I'm really slack this month on my reading. Going through a slow patch :( "

If it weren't for some shorties, I would be really lacking too! My trip really interfered with my reading though it was great to visit with my family!

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 731 comments I'm a glutton for punishment and picked a 480-pager. I'm not complaining though...it's a great read and I'm at 70% already. Yay!

It's been ages since I've read that one. I need to read it again. Love the prose, just have to be in the mood for it. I hated the movie...it didn't do the book justice and the characters came across ten times more childish. I was ready to throw food at the screen, but didn't want to waste good pizza.

I read your review! Hilarious! I loved it! I am SO glad when other people end up not liking the "classics" either.

Jane (PS) | 24343 comments Week 4

Theme:
19 - Main character has a pet (animal).
Option 2 key date: 18 December 2013 (must be rated at least 3 stars, and you can't go back further than this 'date read' if you select from a team-member's bookshelf)

The pet must be an animal and must have a name. No shifters (not that I know how they could be a pet ;) Alien pets are OK.
