Question concerning re-reads:

DO all of the books I read for this challenge have to be new to me except for one? Is that the correct way to interpret the Q&A?

No - has be a pet :)

If that horse is treated like a pet - special to the cowboy - then it will count.

No - you can do the whole challenge on rereads if you like, but you can't read the same book more than once during the challenge - reread or not.

...I'll clarify that in the Q&A soon...

If one falcon is treated differently to the others, and is 'cosseted' then it will count...

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1287 comments In Hexed, the main character has a dog named Oberon. The dog is not a shifter but he can communicate telepathically with his owner. Will this work, or does this need to be a pet with no supernatural abilities at all?

message 112: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 2162 comments Do we just state that the MC has a pet, or does it need to be mentioned in the precis, on a list, shelf etc?

That's fine Sandy. I didn't want shifters who can change into dogs to get picked... Supernatural gifts are fine - so long as he/she is still considered a pet :)

Good question Susan - I was just thinking about that myself!

I would like each selection post to either name the pet, note the book mentions the pet in the precis or post to a link that shows that the book qualifies - link to a shelf etc.

That was my thought. That it was not just a working relationship but one of love as well. So I hope its accepted.

Jasmin (sakuchu) | 137 comments How do the random shelves work? For example: On shelf 1-50 are like 200 books(didn't check the exact number), so what does the 1-50 mean? Will only the first 5 books count for that theme?

message 123: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24340 comments Hi Jasmin

If the random shelves come up as a theme, you can pick any book from any of the shelves. The 1-50 is just the way Yz has filed them for her to keep track; '1-50' are the first 50 lists of 8 (or so) books that Yz generated when she first started the challenge. The '51-100' is the next 50 lists generated, and so on...

I'm not sure what you mean by the first 5 books though... Any book from any of those random shelves count :)

Jane (PS) | 24340 comments Week 5

Theme:
2. Set on a ranch/property which uses/raises horses.
Option 2 key date: 25 December 2013 - Happy Christmas! (must be rated at least 3 stars, and you can't go back further than this 'date read' if you select from a team-member's bookshelf)

You must note how this theme qualifies in your selection post including a link to a shelf with a word such as 'ranch' or noting that the theme is evident on the GR summary page. Please contact me in this thread if you are not sure.

Just having the word 'cowboy' or 'horses' on a shelf link will not be enough - the book needs to be set on a ranch/property with horses.

message 125: by Calila (new)

Calila | 2746 comments Okay so the book I want to read(second in a series) doesn't make it 100% clear that the heroine works at the town "stables", just that she works with horses, but the precis for the first book in the series mentions it as "stables". Can I still count this?

Does that make any kind of sense?

message 126: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 2162 comments Do these work?

Out of the Gate - racehorse
Half Pass - stables/race horse

and this one I think you approved last time, but I didn't read it

message 127: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24340 comments I've rescinded my decision to not allow the shelf to include the word 'horses' - I've since had breakfast and coffee and have been able to think through it further.

So Calila and Susan, if those books are shelved with horses as a word, they are fine :)

Conquer the Flames has shelves with both 'horse' and 'ranch' in them, so it'll will be fine...

got a quick question

I know the setting has to be a ranch. Does it have to have horses on the ranch?

I am looking at

It needs to be set on a ranch with horses. I should think that book would be shelved with the name 'ranch' in there somewhere given it is in the title :)

Woman on the Run is shelved on page 2 of the shelving with both horse and ranch in the shelf names.
Rugged Hearts is shelved as 'ranch' on the first page of shelving.

Good with either of these Diane :)

Hi Diane - It mentions a stable and it clearly has horses in it. The book will qualify, but could you ask her to link to a shelf rather than use the precis claim? :)

Thanks!

message 144: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 354 comments Hi Jane,

This one is tricky. I want to read Echo of Love by Mary Hagen .

I can't see how it has been shelved from its goodreads page , and I am not sure how to check what is has been shelved as? It has only been added by about 10 people.

It says in the precis that the heroine "wants nothing more than to make her horse business successful..." , and the cover of the book shows horses and what looks like a ranch. I am assuming that as "horses" is in the precis it is ok for me to use, but you know what they say about people who assume :)

So, can you please confirm it is ok for me to use this book?

Thanks so much,
Margaret

Wow - this is a really unfortunate book! No shelving whatsoever!

I'm going to let you go with it since is does talk 'horse business' so would reasonably be expected to be shelved 'horses' if anyone 'shelvers' had read it.

Yeah, I didn't think so. I've read the book before, so I know it would work, which is why I asked. Thanks for checking, though.
