Leah | 880 comments Almost done my guilty pleasures book! Not as good as some of the others in the series, but still a decent read.

How's everyone else doing? Any wishes for particular shelves this week???

message 102: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments Oh very nice Leah!

I'm hoping for a shelf that has the book after Written in Red on it - I loved that one! But I can't complain about any of the books I've ended up reading so far for bingo.

message 103: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments Or I guess Wishlist or Alpha Male - since those line up with all our other shelves :)

message 104: by Leah (new)

Leah | 880 comments For the guilty pleasures shelf:

Archangel's Legion by Nalini Singh

Archangel's Legion (Guild Hunter, #6) by Nalini Singh

Rating: 2 and a half stars
Date Read: April 12, 2016

Review: unfortunately, not as good as I'd hoped. I think the main problem I had with this book was that the main couple had already had their happily ever after, so there was no real tension in this book. Having said that, it was still well written and Elena's sarcasm did make me laugh out loud a couple times. I'll keep going with the series, because the next two books are about two new couples!

message 105: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments Nice job Leah! I haven't read any Nalini Singh, but I keep seeing her books around so I need to add something of hers to my reading. Sorry you didn't enjoy this one as much as others.

☘KathyD☘ | 835 comments i'm going with Kiss of a Demon King (Immortals After Dark #7) by Kresley Cole for the strong heroine shelf! =)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 716 comments Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is the book I'm using for strong heroine. I thought I had posted that the other day.

Btw my last exam is over Tuesday at 11am..I'm all yours then, bookshelf read-a-thon starting within the hour that I finish my exam.

message 112: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments That is a great post-exam plan Carrie because it sounds like a nice way to unwind.

Good luck on Tuesday!

☘KathyD☘ | 835 comments finished my strong heroine book!
Kiss of a Demon King (Immortals After Dark #7) by Kresley Cole , Kresley Cole – 4/17/16 – ✮✮✮✮✮
What a ride! This book started a bit slow for me, but once it picked up speed it didn’t slow down! Sabine is one of the more interesting characters in this series. She is the “bad guy,” even though she really is good. Rydstrom’s continued ability to remain kingly in the face of Sabine and her illusions was quite impressive...although it was also impressive to see him let loose! Another great installment from an amazing series!

message 114: by ☘KathyD☘ (new)

☘KathyD☘ | 835 comments good luck Carrie!!

message 115: by Leah (new)

Leah | 880 comments Good luck on your exams Carrie!!

Also, I've changed my strong heroine book. Couldn't get into Scarlet, so I'm reading Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles, #1) by Ilona Andrews instead. Already started and I'm liking it much more!

message 116: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments Oh that's one I've been wanting to read! I think it is good idea to switch - there are too many books in the world to spend time reading one you dislike. I'm interested in Kathy's Kresley Cole book too. I just need school to get out so I have 4 months off and...there still won't be enough time to read everything I want :)

Sandra | 25908 comments Shelf Announcement News

Shelf announcements will be one hour earlier for at least the next 2 weeks, starting this week.

If I can get out of Jury Duty in May, they will continue at the new time. If Judith has to do the announcements during May they will probably go back an hour.

We'll let you know of any changes, as we find out.

Suzanne | 852 comments I finished my Strong Heroine book!

Book Read: Blameless (Parasol Protectorate, #3) by Gail Carriger Blameless by Gail Carriger
Date Read: 4/19/2016
Rating: 4 stars

Review: The story arc comes a bit more front and center in this third book of the series. It takes place soon after the somewhat cliffhanger ending of book 2, and.....that's about all I can say without series spoilers. There are some terrific steampunk inventions, and there is a unique take on the Knights of the Templar.

message 119: by Carrie (last edited Apr 20, 2016 05:46AM) (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 716 comments So I just realized I have to pick a new strong heroine book. Its 198 pages, 2 pages shy of the 200+ rule. Unless 200 pages is the not min then I'm fine.

message 120: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments 200 is the minimum Carrie. Have you checked all editions? If one of the editions meets the rule then you're OK.

message 121: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 716 comments Oh know I never, I should go do that. Thanks.

message 122: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 716 comments Yay I found a few that are over 200 :) So I'll just post that edition when I post my review correct?

message 123: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments Thanks Sandra!! And I'm glad - sounds like you found one that'll work Carrie :)

Correct :)

message 125: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments I hope you are all having a good week!

Urban fantasy is our new shelf!
https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...

It is huge!

I'm probably going to read Thicker Than Water - unless I change my mind :)

message 126: by Leah (new)

Leah | 880 comments For the strong heroine shelf:

Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews

Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles, #1) by Ilona Andrews

Rating: 3 stars
Date Read: April 20, 2016

Review: I liked it! This was a short novel, barely hitting the 200 page minimum, so there were definitely areas where the story could have been fleshed out a little more. But overall, a good start to the story. I love Dina, our innkeeper, and her relationship with the inn - she 'controls' it, but it's more like a sentient entity that she works with. Very cool.

message 127: by Leah (new)

Leah | 880 comments Also Suzanne, I just wanted to make sure you didn't miss my ghosts review (message 88) because you haven't linked to it on the main post!

Urban fantasy is a huge shelf, you're right!!! Will have to take some time picking a book....

message 128: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments Oh thanks Leah! I know I read it, but I clearly forgot to actually link it. I will get both of those linked into the main post this afternoon.

message 129: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments Leah - I figured out what happened with your Ghosts review - I got interested in the book after reading your review, went and read blurbs, put it on my wish list and...... I'm a human Dorrie!

Thanks for ALL of your reviews! :)
I think I have everything updated now.

message 130: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 716 comments Shelf: Strong heroine
Book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
Read: April 21
Rating: 5 Stars
Review:
Reading this book was like stepping back into high school for me. The girl who was looked at as the freak, the girl who was told she was no fun and was told she was depressed, and depressing and that she needed help. I could have wrote this book, I lived so much of it, except I never took art class, I had creative writing, poetry was my drug of choice when it came to outlets.

When you have been in abused/raped/hurt in anyway physical or mental, the hardest thing to do is speak up. Silence at first becomes your friend, your only friend but in the end that same silence can turn in to your enemy, because in the end you only get hurt more with the thoughts you have tormenting you. Wanting to scream but drowning in your words that won't come out.

I think everyone should read this novel...no mater what stereotypical roll you feel into in high school.

I think everyone should read this book...no mater what your experiences with rape or abuse.

I think everyone should read this book..

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 716 comments Now to get those other ones done..

message 132: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments Carrie, that is a fantastic (and convincing) review. Strong heroine indeed!

message 133: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments I requested our shelf stamp - hooray!

message 134: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 716 comments My Urban Fantasy book is going to be Skinwalker (Jane Yellowrock, #1) by Faith Hunter but I won't get it until Monday the book from the library probably until Monday. But that's fine as I have the other shelves to catch up on.

message 135: by ☘KathyD☘ (new)

☘KathyD☘ | 835 comments i have a couple that will work for urban fantasy, but i have to finish a couple other books first! =)

message 136: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 716 comments I'm thinking Graceling (Graceling Realm, #1) by Kristin Cashore for my free space.

message 137: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments Nice - I'll put those down Carrie.

message 138: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 716 comments I'm changing my guilty pleasures book. The one I had picked I only can get in ebook format, library doesn't have the physical book and I need to take a break from reading on my phone. The first shelf and the ghost shelf were/are ebooks and there is only so much reading I can do on such a small screen. Will post the replacement book now shortly.

message 139: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 716 comments I have decided to my guilty pleasures to : The Book of Three (The Chronicles of Prydain #1) by Lloyd Alexander

message 140: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments I think that is a good idea to change Carrie - a nice break for your eyes.

I LOVED that series when I was young - I probably read each of them 10 times or more! I think I still have a dog-eared set downstairs :)

message 141: by Carrie (last edited Apr 22, 2016 08:11AM) (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 716 comments It's a series I have been meaning to get into. I actually checked the book out from the library last week just hadn't started it. I'm now 2 pages into it and I've already laughed aloud I think twice.

message 146: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments I wish I were - I'm grading 200 tests this weekend - bleh - so...that is my primary reading. I'd love an excuse to read for a whole day!! Fantastic idea.

message 147: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 716 comments Shelf: Guilty Pleasures
Book: The Book of Three (The Chronicles of Prydain #1) by Lloyd Alexander (page like 98 or 97)
Read: April 22
Rating: 5 Stars
Review: Why did it take me this long to start this series. Such a wonderful adventure, with such likable characters. Sword fights, humble hero who starts off as a nobody, friendship, unlikely group finding friendship. Whats not to love. Will be buying this series.

Book 1: Dewey's 24 hour read-a-thon

Would have given a longer/better review if I wasn't participating in this event.
