Your own private library. And that's an extra reward for volunteering. Good on you.

Now I am going to read Cross Stitch. I LOVE the Outlander TV series so much and after last night's finale, I have decided that I desperately need to get the first 3 books read before the next season. Wish me luck!

Andrea | 2163 comments I'm reading Cairo by Chris Womersley. It's very different from his other novel that I read, Bereft. I'm enjoying it though. It's set in a part of Melbourne I know quite well.

Definitely one of my favourite TV series (I have a few. Lol) and I am really excited about reading them, finally! Thank you, Zoey!

Elias Zanbaka | 862 comments Just finished Hunted by James Patterson. Another one of his "Book Shots" that everyone's probably sick of hearing me mention by now, haha! Looks like Patterson was inspired by "Hard Target" with this one. There were a lot of similarities between that film and this story but that never got in the way of enjoyment of it!

message 514: by Jeanette (new)

Jeanette | 400 comments I have just started to read Persimmon Tree, Bryce Courtney, not a favourite author of mine. An library ebook hard to determine just how pages hard copy but almost fainted at the 1400 or so I have to wade through. I forgot that other books I have read from BC similar in volume. I am enjoying it, however, some extra culling of this book would still leave it interesting particularly those interested in some proponents of WW2 in Pacific areas

Nicole Alexander (nicole_alexander) | 98 comments I finally finished Haxby's Circus by Katharine Susannah Prichard Haxby's Circus by Katharine Susannah Prichard . Filled with detail about life on the road with a family circus, it was a fascinating if detailed read and most nights I only managed a chapter. Time for something a little lighter. 3.5 stars.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments I have loved every book of Paul Torday's so far, and I'm now onto his sixth, The Legacy of Hartlepool Hall and enjoying it, even just a few pages in.
Just two novellas (Theo: A Novella and Breakfast at the Hotel Déjà Vu) and one more novel Light Shining In The Forest to read. And of course the one his son completed Death of an Owl when it comes out. Then no more by this brilliant author :(

Elias Zanbaka | 862 comments James Patterson hasn't hit a false note yet with his "Book Shots" series. He's now at five for five with The Witnesses. It reminded me a lot of "Rear Window" - one of my favourite movies. I've now come out with what I would probably consider my favourite character from his short story series so far.

Isn't this a play script rather than a story?

I was told this when it was first announced so,haven't pre-ordered it for that reason. Thought I'd wait and see.

message 529: by Elias (new)

Elias Zanbaka | 862 comments I think it is but at the end of the day a story is still being told despite the format.

Sally906 | 86 comments Elias wrote: "I think it is but at the end of the day a story is still being told despite the format."

Fair enough - but I bet thousands of fans haven't figured it out and are going to be very disappointed. I can read plays - indeed I've read and enjoyed some obscure Russian plays - but many people can't read like this.

I worry that because they don't like the format there will be some stinking reviews.

I don't think the advertising is very clear which is a shame. My son had no idea as he was going to buy it for his son...

message 532: by Elias (last edited Jul 21, 2016 10:48PM) (new)

Elias Zanbaka | 862 comments There's that and the fact that plays are usually very stripped down, so a lot of detail and description will be lost and that will probably make it harder for readers to connect to the story on an emotional level.

I do agree, Brenda in that they should be clearer on this as at first even I thought it was a going to be another new novel! I guess it is harder to try and advertise it as a play to the younger demographic, so I can maybe understand, from a marketing perspective, why they're just going with calling it the latest instalment in the Harry Potter series

message 533: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Agree, Sally, re Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I had to Google it before I found that it was a play, and that was only via an interview with JKR. Even the book blurb on GR is not particularly clear either, especially if you speed read the italics.

The narrative moved around a lot - timeline/characters , and at times I got a little lost, but an enjoyable read.

Also reading Lolcatz, Santa, and Death by Dog: Strange and True Tales from Science and Technology which has lots of short anecdotey chapters so is great to read in bursts.

Rita Chapman | 151 comments I'm reading The Gypsy Madonna https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... . It is about a six year old German boy living in France with his mother following his father's death. He and his mother are treated with contempt by the locals because of their German connection and so terrify he young boy that he stops speaking. It is beautifully written and very different.

PS can someone please tell me how to do the book's name link?

message 547: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments I'm very much enjoying my current read The Satanic Mechanic: A Tannie Maria Mystery which is the second in the Tannie Maria Mystery series.

Tannie Maria writes the Love Advice and Recipe column for the Klein Karoo Gazette (all explained in the first book) and here's a little example:

“‘Dear Auntie Maria,
My boyfriend says he wants to have two girlfriends. He has a story about how he loves me but you can never find everything you want in one person. He wants us all to have dinner together some time (me and his other girlfriend). What should I do?
Miss Helpme’

I finished my coffee and answered:

‘Dear Miss Helpme,
Tell your boyfriend that is fine, so long as you have two boyfriends as well. And each of your boyfriends has two girlfriends. And those girlfriends need two too, and so on. It will be like a chain letter.
The problem will be having dinner together. How do you plan numbers for catering? It would be safest to have a picnic in the park or on the beach and ask everyone to bring thieir own food.’”

But she does go on to provide some less frivolous advice:

“It may be true that you cannot find everything you want in one person. But it's also true that your most important needs must be met by yourself.
If your boyfriend does not like the chain-letter plan, and does not want to be faithful to you, you may find you can meet your needs better without him. It is more lonely to be with someone who cannot love you right, than to be on your own.”
And then, of course, she includes a recipe, Annemarie's amazing brandy tart

Elias Zanbaka | 862 comments Just finished Tick Tock by James Patterson. Despite reading them out of the order, they just keep getting better! I will say that this instalment had the most interesting villains out of all the books I'd read so far in the series as well as the most interesting villainous plan.
