Martina | 4 comments Hi, My name is Martina I'm 25. I'm a phd student in string theory in Hamburg, originally I'm italian. I love read, and I'm facing gender inequality as you every single day. Emma is really great and her work at UN is admirable. I think this group can help us to deeper our knowledge on the gender problem, mine for sure.
I hope to learn and to grow up as a women and as human being.

Becca (beccajhamilton) | 2 comments Hey!

I'm Becca, I'm from Manchester in the UK, and I'm currently a student studying English Literature & American Studies. I didn't really know what I wanted to do when I signed up for the degree, having switched from a career in Engineering, but I've found a lot of papers discussing gender, roles of women, feminism; and this board seemed to come right at the right time as me writing a paper on the Cult of Domesticity from the 1800's, and the progress (or lack of?!) we've made since then.

Hopefully reading & discussing books with other like-minded people on here will invite opportunity to be exposed to texts I'll never have found otherwise, and I'm looking forward to it!

message 403: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Hi! I'm Stephanie and I'm from Virginia in the United States. I love to read and joined this group because I'm interested in exploring more in the world of books. I mostly read fiction so I thought joining this group may open my reading world to other books other than fiction. I love animals, especially dogs :)

Jaclyn Hi everyone,
My name is Jaclyn, i'm 21 and from Syria.
I read a lot and my top new year resolution is to read books on feminism.I strongly believe in equality, i'm that girl who tells people that' sexist, the first thing they say "we didn't mean it that way".I use the books to make my point and to most importantly to educate myself.
Thank you Emma you are a great person.
already loving the club :)

See you around.

message 406: by Caoimhe (new)

Caoimhe Burke | 1 comments Hi!
I'm Caoimhe, a 22 year old History and English student from Ireland.
In terms of English literature, my favourite fields of study are Feminism, Postmodernism, and American Literature.
I hope to study an MA in Digital Humanities from September 2016.
I didn't really know what I wanted to do with my life until about 3 months ago, but I knew I wasn't ready to graduate so I spent a year studying in Canada to learn under a different academic system and to have an adventure. Greatest decision of my life.
I am an enthusiast of packed bookshelves, massive dogs, strong coffee and Oxford commas. I'm terrible at mornings in general.
Really looking forward to this virtual book club, I've never done anything like this before!
Hugs, Caoimhe

Hellos people,

I am Selena and I'm from the States.

I am really excited to be a part of this group. I have heard a lot of gender inequality and decided to go against it. I really love what Emma Watson does! Thank you Emma.

I need to learn more about Feminism, therefore, I decided to come here. I also came here because I love Emma Watson!

Have a good day :)

message 408: by Darina (new)

Darina Milova | 9 comments Hello everybody!
My name is Darina and I am fron Ukraine. First of all I have joined this club because I am Emma Wotson's fan and I am really into what she is currently doing. When I heard the news about the club I was really excited. I consider it is a great chance to learn a lot of new, secondly to train my language skills, because I would like to take part in all discussions.
To sum up, it is the great begining of the year!
Wish luck to everybody)

message 409: by Divya (new)

Divya Darshini Hello Everybody,
My name is Divya. I am from India and I am 14 years of age.

I consider myself a strong egalitarian. I am eager to keep learning more and more about feminism. I have a long way to go.
I want to speak up about my experiences and understand the experiences of others.

Social media has greatly helped me connect with so many different people from different places and backgrounds. It is also the reason I started identifying myself as a feminist.
Up until then although I believed in equal rights for all regardless of gender, sexuality, race, religion, etc., I did not truly understand how things such as stereotyping and discrimination are ingrained in us, and how we mostly never realise when it happens. I learned that to be aware of what one is saying or doing, they must question all that they see and hear and speak. I sort of find it hard to explain how and when I started identifying myself as a feminist.

But I must say that Emma Watson's HeforShe speech gave me a quite some clarity on the term feminism and propelled me to learn more about inclusive Third Wave Feminism.

So, I have joined this group to, as I said earlier, learn more and never stop. When I read, I get quite anxious that I might not remember everything I am reading, and so when I read, I get scared to move onto the next page. I want to overcome this, and I don't want it to be a hurdle on my path to learning.

So now, I guess... forgive me for the extra long comment.
It's great to see so many people from so many places gathered here. This is amazing! I can't wait to get to know all of you!

Bye! ♥♥ :)

message 410: by Sunny (new)

Sunny Berry | 1 comments My name is Sunita Berry but I prefer Sunny. I'm currently living in Victoria, Melbourne. I am joining this book club because I used to read heavily but haven't had much of a chance over the past two years. I'm also hoping this club will inspire me to learn more about the feminist movement and to read books I otherwise would not see. Plus, I've always liked the idea of a book club/belonging to a community.

I think it's really awesome to see someone so passionate and deeply rooted in the topic of feminism like Crystal Ramirez. I can't say the same for anything on my part really, as I'm a very relaxed and fluid person who doesn't really feel very strongly towards the important things, in fact I sweat the little things way too much...

message 411: by Roma (new)

Roma (romaisreading) Hi, I'm Roma. I'm a seventeen and a fine arts students from the Philippines.
I love literature and want to expand my scope of reading of feminist literature and works by women.
It's really great that even young girls are now very much aware of the situations facing us and the inequality that for centuries most women just shrug off and are now fighting against said inequality.
I'm excited to be in discussion with you guys and to learn from all of you!

message 412: by Gabriela (new)

Gabriela | 1 comments Hi,
My name is Gabriela and I am from Brazil. I am a journalist and I am 25 years old.
I joined the group for several reasons (I love books, I am a journalist, I love writing), but mostly because I want to understand more about feminism and discuss the importance of fighting for our rights.
I guess I still have a lot to learn from women like you :)
Thank you, nice to meet you all

message 413: by Lise (new)

Lise | 1 comments Hi everyone ! I'm Lise and I come from France (so my apologies for all English mistakes I will do...)

Anyway I joined this group because I think that literature has a great power to convey ideas, so this group is a very good initiative and I hope it will enrich us intellectually speaking ! I am also a kind of bookworm and I am happy to be able to combine this with our struggle for advancing women's rights.

message 414: by Alyssa (last edited Jan 08, 2016 09:43AM) (new)

Alyssa Simon | 1 comments Hi everyone,

My name is Alyssa Simon. I am 22 years old and I'm joining you from Halifax, Canada. I am in the midst of completing my MA in Communications, and I adore reading, particularly texts that explore the human spirit (with my greatest loves being philosophy and classics).

I have become so impressed with my institution - Mount St. Vincent University - which has incorporated gender equality and feminism into its core beliefs and every action. With the president, majority of faculty and most students being women, it has been a joy to see the bonds of support, positivity and sisterhood among students and professors alike. I hope that, by taking part in Our Shared Shelf, I will be able to contribute more to discussions of feminism than simply quoting theory. Thank you to everyone who has put this together, it's much appreciated!

message 415: by Gabi (new)

Gabi Bisconti | 3 comments Hi everyone! My name is Gabi and I'm 21 and from New Jersey (USA). I'm a university student double-majoring in English (concentration in Drama) & Theatre (concentrations in writing and acting), with a double-minor in Italian and Film & Media Studies.

I'm a passionate feminist and as I prepare to graduate from my undergraduate studies, I'm interested in learning more about myself as a feminist and as a woman in general to prepare myself for the future. As someone particularly interested in women's roles (and all gender roles) in the film industry, Emma Watson's cause struck me in particular; seeing someone in the industry I'm striving to be a part of that is so involved and passionate in a cause that I am longing to be a more integral part of is inspiring and made me want to join.

I'm so excited to make friends and get to know some truly special people through this experience!

Francisca Torres (frantasma) | 1 comments Hello! I'm Fran from Santiago, Chile. I'm 23 years old and I'm about to be a sociologist :). I have always been interested in feminism, so this is a great opportunity to know what to read, to help with some reading tips (if we work on some feminist social sciences ha ha), and to share ideas.

It's great how women from evereywhere are posting here :')

Greg Rokisky (gregrokisky) | 1 comments Hi everyone!

My name is Greg and I'm a 24-year-old from the United States.

Emma Watson is one of my all-time favorite people, both for her talent as an actress but also as an activist. I am always looking for more books to read and blog about and saw Emma started "Our Shared Shelf." It was destiny and I couldn't pass up joining this incredible shared experience :)

Looking forward to hearing so many different perspectives and insight!

Nic Mercado (niccthulhu) My name is Nicole Schwartz. I'm from Florida, I'm 23, and I am currently waiting to hear from the graduate schools I applied to. I hope to earn a PhD in Communication with focuses in computer mediated communication, culture, and media. I hope to study video games and how they affect communication skills. Oh, I am also newly engaged to my boyfriend of 3 & 1/2 years. =D

I'm excited for this book club because I have always wanted to be a part of a book club and I am always looking for excuses to read more. Plus Emma Watson is a pretty rad chick. I hope to gain greater insight into the inequalities present in society and what can be done to ease these harms. I hope that it will influence my academic work in a very positive way.

message 432: by Kristie (new)

Kristie Bringhurst Hi, everyone! I'm Kristie. I'm originally from Massachusetts, but I've lived in Salt Lake City, UT for 8 years now. I graduated with a degree in English from the University of Utah about two years ago. Being an English major was my favorite thing I've ever done.

I joined this book club because I'm a feminist and I set a goal to read 45 books this year, so why not read feminist lit? :) I hope to read some books that focus on intersectional feminism because I feel that I need to expand my mind a bit and understand women of different backgrounds and experiences.

I'm really excited to start reading! I've been searching for a book club for what feels like eternity!

message 433: by Meghan (new)

Meghan Cunningham | 1 comments Hi everyone!

My name is Meghan. I'm 25 years old and I live in Maine. I minored in Gender Studies at University and really miss the opportunity to have discussions on gender and feminism more specifically.

I think Emma is doing such a wonderful job of bringing feminism into general discourse and I so look forward to reading her thoughts as well as everyone else's on all of the books we will read!

message 434: by Ursin (new)

Ursin Raffainer | 2 comments Hi everyone,

my name Ursin Raffainer, I'm 30 soon and I'm a swiss archaeologist.

I saw Emmas post on Facebook about this club and came here. I admire how she's standing up for equality and always finds clear and relatable words. I think she's an inspirational role model for many women AND men.

Equality is one of my main principles of how to treat others and I try to overcome my culturally ingraind biases about gender every day. I think equality, be it between gender, religion, culture or people in general is a very important topic to tackle and something we can work on and improve on bit by bit every day.
Since I'm new to the topic of Feminism and would like to know more about it, I welcome the oportunity here very much. I like the idea of an open group and debate and I'm looking foreward to our first discussion.

All the enthusiastic posts here are very motivating!
Nice to meet you all!

Elena | 3 comments Hi everyone! I'm Elena, 22 years old and I live in Italy. Currently I'm in med school and my dream is to become a surgeon.
I really love reading but last year I wasn't able to read enough (it was a living hell). I consider myself a feminist so, when I saw the group I thought "that's my group!" and so here I am!

message 438: by Suzi (new)

Suzi (sbommers) | 33 comments Hello everyone!

My name is Suzi. I am 35 years old and live in Michigan (USA). I work full time as an Executive Assistant and am close to completing my Paralegal certification. I have been an avid reader my entire life, and I will read just about anything I can put my hand on.

I joined this group because feminism is a cause which I care deeply about. The idea of being able to discuss feminist literary works and ideas with such a diverse group of people is very captivating; particularly when the founder of the club is such prominent member of the global feminist movement.

Recently, I have been reading less and less as work and school take up more of my time, and I hope that this club will be the catalyst I have been looking for to reverse that trend and bring new genres and books into my life that I may not have picked up otherwise.

I look forward to thought provoking and insightful discussions!

First thing, Happy Birthday to you in advance! Have a wonderful reading year ahead!

Singapore is a pretty great place! Do visit it if you have a chance :)

And wow, seems like you are really knowledgeable about such issues. Do you have any titles that would be good for a beginner to explore? I really look forward to the insights you would bring to the group :)

I'm Mariel from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. I'm 27 years old.

I found out about this group by an ELLE post on their website. This could be an interesting group, and the truth is that one of the ways to beat the impotence of mysoginistic views is with knowledge.

message 441: by Olivia (new)

Olivia Stuck (livloveread) Hello everyone!

I'm Olivia, and I'm 17 years old.

My one true passion is reading, and I love everything about it. As I'm getting older and becoming more involved in society, there are certain things I want to explore. Equality and feminism are two things I'm very interested in. I'm so excited this book club was started, and I can't wait to explore and discuss with all of you! Through all our creative minds and knowledge, I know only greatness is to come. Thanks Emma for giving all of us a platform!

Amanda | 8 comments Hiya everyone!

Loving this so much and excited to see where it goes from here.

My name is Amanda - I'm from Kentucky but now live in NYC where I work as a personal assistant. I enjoy reading and have been wanting to join a book club for awhile, and what could be better than a global one where the topic of feminism is discussed?

I also just recently bought Gloria Steinem's book - so I thought that was a sign to jump on in! Looking forward to discussing with you all!

David Cromarty | 35 comments My name is Crom, I'm 34 and live in Bath.

I joined this group because I have been massively impressed by Miss Watson's* campaigning for feminism. I also want to read more and (in particular) read a wider variety of books.

* - Is that too formal? Seems wrong to call her Emma when we've never met.

message 447: by Zeinab (new)

Zeinab El | 1 comments Hello everyone!

My name is Zeinab and I am from Egypt. I'm fourteen years old. Around here there isn't really much to work with to try to start projects and spread awareness, especially with my age. I'm not really well educated about feminism and other important issues that plague our society because my traditional valued culture strains to broaden its horizons and allow new ideas to surface in the murky taboo waters.
I am fortunate enough to receive a great education from the top international school in my country and to have lived abroad growing up. This has opened my mind greatly to things I would have never experienced with the conservative culture I grew up with. I hope to learn and grow as a feminist with this book club by reading with such a wonderful community. I am hungry to learn and learn is what I will do. I have come here to gain the knowledge I crave. I am greatly looking forward to see what discussions will happen on this page.

message 448: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilabrie) | 1 comments Hi Everyone, I'm thrilled to be joining you all! My name's Kristi, I'm 28 years old and I live in Southwestern Maine.

I was really interested in joining this bookclub, mainly for educating myself further in feminism. Coming from a very rural area with not much diversity and not having any feminists in my family while growing up, I just never knew what it meant to be a 'good' feminist!

Over the last few years, I've really been learning how to respect myself and empower myself as a woman, along with other women, and I want to learn more. I work with some wonderfully smart, strong women who are really inspiring.

I've been getting back into the game of reading the last couple of years (I think I was just burnt out after college), so I may not end up reading *all* of the books listed in this Group, but I do plan on following along and getting some great book recommendations that I can read at my own pace. :)

To comment on Suzi's message above: I have to agree with your reasons for joining as well! I'm really looking forward to being a part of such a large, diverse group and I'm glad that Emma decided to lead such a great cause. I think we're going to have some really rich discussions in 2016!
