message 551: by Noelia (new)

Noelia | 1 comments Hi everyone!

My name is Noelia, and I'm 25 years old. I'm from Spain but I've been living in the U.S. (Virginia) for the past five years.

I got addicted to reading when I was 10 years old with the Harry Potter series, and sinxe then I have read more books than I can count.

I've always been a feminist and I really admire the work of Emma Watson and her as a person. So I am really looking forward to read the books she recommends.

Nice to meet you all!

Kayla Dyer (kayladyer) | 3 comments Hello everyone!
My name is Kayla. I'm from Huntington, West Virginia, and I am a blogger at Mountain Gypsy. I love writing, yoga and copious amounts of coffee.

I love reading, but in the last year I have definitely got out of the groove (moving, new job, etc). I am hoping this group will expose me to new and inspiring reading, connect with some awesome women, and support Emma's (and our) efforts toward equality as women.

Let us all be humans together. <3

Kayla

Katie McKay-Phillips (ruffledfeathers20) | 1 comments Excited to be a part of this group, read the titles chosen and be part of some robust discussion. Hopefully we will see some of these names on the screen changing the world.

message 554: by Oona (new)

Oona Shah | 1 comments hi my name is Oona, i'm nearly 16, and i come from Nairobi, Kenya, but i've lived in the UK from a year and a bit now.
i love Emma Watson, for her passion and work with the UN on feminism, mainly because she made me understand why the topic is commonly treated as taboo. i believe that equality is one of the most important issues, and i would like to start to get involved in making a difference to try to help.
i also love reading, and im always told that i read to much, so im glad to join =)

message 555: by Olivia (new)

Olivia DeRoche | 1 comments I am 16 years old and I am from Southern California:) I am here because as I approach college, a time where I get to define myself and the world around me, I want to absorb as much info as I can about accomplishing change in our world. I want to know everything there is to know about activism and how to execute it in an effective way.
I have a passion for learning people's stories so I can know the world through the different people that live in it. Emma Watson has always been the biggest role model of mine (as I'm sure many of you can relate to) because she was the first influential female I was introduced to that showed girls how to empower themselves. Many celebrities will tell you they are feminist and want to see change but Emma showed us how. Through integrity, compassion, talent and a determination to get a great education she was an example of how to empower yourself and the people around you. With an emphasis of education she inspired me to want to learn about the world around me.
I cannot wait to learn as much as I can from these books and your input!!

message 556: by Carlie (new)

Carlie Preissler | 1 comments Hello! I'm Carlie. I'm 20 and I'm English and Literature major. I joined this group because I love to read. I've always admired Emma and how she uses her notoriety for good. I hope to have fun and learn for this experience.

message 557: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Kent | 2 comments Hi! My name is Rebecca and I'm 21 from Sandhurst, England

I'm currently in my final year of university and I study Maths at the University of Kent in Canterbury.

The reason that I joined this book club is that I used to read all the time when I was a teenager, but since I've started uni, I've found myself binging on tv series and films rather than digging in to a good book.

For this particular book club, I have always read fiction, mainly adventure and romance novels. But reading something with more depth on a topic that I'm passionate about and live through - being a women in a STEM subject and hoping for a future in finance, is something that I'm really excited to do.

message 558: by Kaylie (new)

Kaylie | 2 comments Hello! My name is Kaylie Lavin and I live north of San Francisco. I'm 29 (30 in March), a feminist since high school, married and mother to two boys, ages 3 & 7. My youngest was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes so I am currently staying home taking care of him as it's a fairly precise science lol.
Feminism has always been important to me but now that I am the mother to 2 boys, more so. Also, the current political climate of the US has me feeling as though I need to be more vocal and this seems like a great place to start. I'm really looking forward to healthy discussions and friendship!

message 559: by Alice (new)

Alice (alicemar) Hi all!

I'm Alice, and I'm 14, female from Ireland.

I joined this book club because I look up to Emma Watson so much and admire all her work she does with the UN. I find Feminism a very interesting subject and I hope to play my part in it. I want to learn more about it and hopefully I can do this through Emma's book club.

I also LOVE reading. I read every hour of the day and it's a huge part of my life

message 560: by Aiswarya (last edited Jan 08, 2016 10:34AM) (new)

Aiswarya Kishor (aiswarya_kishor) | 1 comments My name is Aiswarya and I'm a university student at Manchester, England.

I'm here simply because I love reading and equality of the sexes is a cause close to my heart. I also think this is the perfect chance to discover new books and perhaps see the world a little differently.

Looking forward to the next 12 months!

message 561: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin | 1 comments Hello Everyone!!

I am Caitlin, I currently live in Portland, OR (USA)! I work for a historic hotel and I love it!

I love the idea of a feminist book club, or any book club for that matter. I have tried so many times to start book clubs with my friends in town, however, it was so difficult to get everyone together that it fizzled after only a few months.

This is a great forum to start a discussion about feminism amongst people from all faiths, backgrounds and locations. I love the work that Emma is doing for the UN, and it is important for female ambassadors to create an interdisciplinary dialogue about key topics relating to the struggles women face all around the world.

I have to admit that I am recently "getting into" the idea of feminism and understanding international women's rights. I have always followed key news stories, but never actively read feminist writers until now!

I am very excited to start this journey with you all!

message 562: by Margot (new)

Margot | 2 comments Hi everybody! My name is Margot, I'm 16 years old and I'm from Belgium.

I joined this bookclub because, well first of all I LOVE to read, and of course, I'm a fan of Emma, she is such a great human being, she is an inspiration for me. Remember when she used the word 'feminist' when she was told not to, 'cause how will men ever use the term if women are afraid of it. I don't know a lot about feminism, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to learn a lot here!!! I'm really excited about all this!!

ps sorry for potential spelling mistakes, English is not my first language ;-)

message 563: by Emely (new)

Emely Osorto | 6 comments Hi!! I'm Emely Osorto. I'm 16 years old, identifying as a feminist, a lesbian, and Latina+Hispanic. I live in Florida with my mom and cat c:
I joined the book club because I want to be able to show my support in the few ways I can, and because I genuinely want the experience of connecting with other people who share the common interest of liberation and positivity. Also I want to read more this year!

message 565: by Claire-Elise (new)

Claire-Elise My name is Claire-Elise, I'm 19 and I'm from France.

Ever since I was a child, I've always loved reading, so the idea to read books that will allow me to discuss about feminism and hopefully learn more about it is super exciting to me, because even though I consider myself a feminist, I sometimes think I do not understand enough all the different struggles different women experience across the globe.

I also think it will be really interesting to see how feminism and female characters in general are portrayed throughout literature,

message 566: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hsbrislin) | 2 comments My name is Hannah I live in the wonderful state of Vermont. I am joining this book club because I want to keep up with feminist books and authors, as well as educate myself on the views of feminist from all walks of life.

message 567: by Marie Louise (new)

Marie Louise Hi everyone.

My name is Marie Louise. I'm 27 and from Denmark.

I've loved books since before I could read myself and I'm always looking for new books to read, because sometimes I get stuck in a genre.

I've been a feminist since my early teens, but it's been a long time since I last read any books on the subject. I just graduated university and I am looking for a job right now, so it's a good time for me to discover new and interesting books on a subject that means a lot to me.

message 568: by Maeve (new)

Maeve (maevereads) Hello all! I'm Maeve and I live in America. I'm 18 years old and currently I'm studying at college.

I joined this book club because getting to know a bunch of like-minded people sounds awesome! I took a Gender Studies course this past semester at college and it was so inspiring and enlightening, and I hope this book club will continue to further my interests in feminism.

I recommend we read Feminism is for Everybody by Bell Hooks. Such a great read.

Feel free to message me or friend me or whatever else it is you do on here!

message 569: by Beto (last edited Jan 08, 2016 11:02AM) (new)

Beto (betogrimaldi) Hello, people!

My name is Alberto (but everyone calls me Beto) and I have 17 years old. I live in Aracaju, which is the smallest capital in Brazil (and we speak portuguese, not "brazilian") and I love to read. And 'have been loving' ever since I was 5.

I've joined some goodreads reading groups but haven't been attached to any of them, so I'm looking forward that this one will change it all for me.

I really want to know some very nice people here and read some great books.

p.s: I do not consider myself as a 'feminist', but I do respect women and support their rights. Don't get me wrong, I just don't like labels and I really hope that one day everybody will have the same rights)

message 570: by Eliza (new)

Eliza (theinkinthepages) | 1 comments Hello everyone!

I'm Eliza from Australia, I am 15 and I am very excited about this group!
I read a lot in general, but mainly young adult fantasy novels. I am happy to be branching out and reading books that will teach me something, but that teach me something about our world!

Thankyou Emma for creating this book club, I look forward to participating in it!

Eliza xx

Robin (robinleeann) Hello! I'm Robin! 18 years old. I'm from Dallas, Texas. I mostly grew up in Dallas and Mesquite. I go to college at the University of North Texas. I'm studying English as my major with a concentration in creative writing. I also have two minors, psychology and Japanese.

I'm joining this book club, because I have never been in one before and I thought this one sounded wonderful. I find that a bit strange that I haven't since I own almost 200 books myself and have written a few. (I've always wanted to be a novelist.)

It's wonderful to meet everyone! ^~^

Jo (jo961) | 5 comments Hi Everyone!

My name is Jo, I am 52 (soon to be 53) and live in Plymouth, UK.

I am an equality and diversity expert and have worked in this field for about 25 years. It's not just my work though, I am completely passionate about equality and justice (even have it tattooed on my back). I run a Community Interest Company called Blue Parakeet which provides coaching, training and consultancy around women juggling work/ a career and being a mother (from pregnancy planning to empty nests). I have recently launched a project called Prejudice and Pride showcasing women working in non-traditional jobs. (You can find Women Prejudice and Pride on Facebook).

I also LOVE reading and am a member of a couple of on-line book clubs and have been a member of good reads for a while. I have been a World Book Night giver for the last 4 years.

I have had a variety of careers from archaeologist, birth doula, civil servant and charity worker. I have worked in Iraq, Spain and Bangladesh and love to travel.

I have two children and I am sure that my daughter will join this too!

Can't wait to hear what everyone thinks of the book! So lovely to read all the profile!

Every best wish

Jo :)

Brie | 1 comments Hi!

I'm Grace, I'm 21, and I'm from Canada.

I've wanted to join a book club of some sort for a while now, because I love reading and discussing books, but it's hard to know where to start looking. I really admire Emma, and I'm very much a feminist, so this seemed perfect. I'm very excited!

Janice (janaz28) | 15 comments Hi,
my name is Janice, I am 23 years old and I am from Germany. I am studying at a german university but I am also greatly imvolved in community work. I consider myself a feminist, lately I have started reading a lot of different books and discussing feminism and euquality in society. I feel like there is still a lot of things that need to be done and I think starting a book club for people from all over the world in which we can discuss, read, learn and support each other is a great idea. I am very much looking forward to reading all of your great ideas, thoughts and suggestions. I hope this club and the inspiration we receive will help us become more aware of ourselves, the world and all the things we can still do, to draw attention to the cause!

Rachel (NotNero) | 6 comments Hello!

I'm Rachel and I'm from Kent, in England. I'm 18, Beat Generation fan and currently in my last year of Sixth Form. i'm taking English Literature, Philosophy and History. Applying to study Law in September! I avidly seek intellectual discussion and debate to expand my knowledge base, so I've read (or plan to read, anyway!) anything and everything from Milo Yiannopoulos' articles to the works of Mary Wollstonecraft herself. I actually don't consider myself a modern feminist, as I don't believe in 3rd Wave Feminism, so it'll be great to discuss feminism-related topics with you guys.

I'm similar to Andrea here, in that I've been involved in feminism-related discussion for a while now, and I'm always interested in new ways of talking to a range of people with a range of views on the subject. So here I am!

I hope I can get the books from the library in time to read them with everyone.

Thanks, Emma, for the group.

message 588: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten | 1 comments Hi, I am Kirsten, living in North Carolina (USA) and I'm 49 years old. I have admired Emma's work in the UN and saw her invitation on Facebook. My interest in really understanding current feminist trends has recently been sparked as I've watched my daughter grow up and I've seen her evolving attitudes about feminism, men's rights, the "social justice warrior" trend, etc. I firmly believe that the proper tenets of feminism are inclusive rather than exclusive and should support freedom from gender-based barriers on all levels and for all people. I'm interested to see if any of those questions come up in these discussions!

message 589: by Signe (last edited Jan 08, 2016 12:02PM) (new)

Signe | 2 comments Hi, my name is Signe, I'm from Denmark and I'll be 30 in 3 weeks (yikes!) and I'm currently working as a highschool teacher.

I'm always looking for inspiration when it comes to books, and I think this community will fulfill all of my needs.

I look forward to educating myself more on feminism, and I hope that I will be able to pass my knowledge on to my students.
Can't wait to see what the future holds for this community :-)

message 590: by Joanna (new)

Joanna (artisticone) | 1 comments Hi Everyone,
My name is JoAnna . I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota, I am 56 years young and am employed as an Executive Pastry Chef, I joined this group because I am a long term feminist and used to meet up with other like minded women back in the 80's. We don't see each other much anymore and I miss the wonderful critiques and conversations. I am also a Women Studies Major in College, and I love to read. Thanks Emma for starting this group.

message 591: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Dawson | 1 comments Hello! My name is Victoria. I'm 21. I just graduated university last month. I earned my BA in Intercultural Studies with a minor in French. I am working to become a Christian missionary to Senegal where I hope to join in the gender equality movement and work towards bettering education circumstances there. I am an avid reader, and I come from the Southern U.S. where explaining the actual definition of feminism to men and women alike is a regular experience for me. I am so excited to join these discussions and explore different perspectives. I love Emma Watson, and I can't wait to see what this book club holds!

message 592: by Marina (new)

Marina (lafilipe) | 2 comments Hello, everyone!

My name is Marina, I'm a 32-year old broadcaster from Brazil. Since Portuguese is my native language I'll probably make some English mistakes, so I apologize in advance.

I'm a feminist and as a feminist I want things to change. Not only around me, but also inside me. Accepting yourself as a feminist means fighting against everything you've been taught. Is finding new answers to all the answers you've been giving.

Studying, reading, listening to other women, sharing our stories and fears is the only way to actually make that change, globally and within ourselves.

That's why I'm here. Thanks for having me!

message 596: by Malia (new)

Malia (calypso007) | 3 comments Hi,

My name is Malia. I'm from Germany, now living in the US for quite some time.

As a writer myself, and frankly as a woman, I am always eager to read work by other female authors. In today's world where everything is so fast-paced, and new things are being invented and changed all the time, it is mind-boggling that there is still in many areas of life and many places in the world, such a gap in gender equality. I am looking forward to learning from and exchanging thoughts with my fellow readers, this club sounds like a wonderful forum for intelligent and enjoyable discussion.
Oh, and I really like books, too:-)

Kate Craig | 1 comments Hello!

I'm Kate from Washington, DC. I'm 34. I love reading and writing books-- mostly fiction novels rooted in women empowerment and LGBT themes.

I joined because I enjoy feminist books and the first book is an amazing choice. I read it after I saw Gloria Steinem at the Sixth and I Synagogue in DC. She tells stories in a way that captures the audience's attention. I look forward to the additional selections that will follow and maybe one day (fingers crossed) one of my novels will be listed as a to read on Emma Watson's shared shelf.

I've joined this book club because I love to read. And I love to challenge myself. I believe in gender equality and in female empowerment. I believe that I have as many rights as men and no one has the right to tell me how to live. But I am not a feminist, mainly because I don't agree with feminist theory. That is why this is a challenge. I'm always willing to push myself out of my box. I don't believe that I will change my mind but I do believe that I will come away with this with a greater understanding.
