Introduction

My name is Helen, and whilst I personally don't identify myself as a feminist, I do support the idea of equality for both men and women, and I joined this group to educate myself and join the discussion since often I don't feel able to speak up around people I know who have different (and very strong) opinions.
Nice to meet all of you :)

I'm Kelly. I'm a 34 year old wife, barista, and super-mom to an amazingly independent and brilliant 7 year old girl. I have a Bachelors in Sociology from the University of Central Florida. I currently live in Baltimore, Maryland (my hometown).
My first passion (after raising a strong, amazing kid) is writing, and I'm currently working on...a lot of things. I mostly write urban fantasy and dystopia, but with a great deal of social commentary, and with the sort of heroes and heroines I never got to see in books growing up.
And I read. Constantly (all authors should/do). I'm always open to book suggestions. Hit me up.

I found this group through Emma Watson's FB announcement and wanted to join because I'm a huge fan of her and I want to learn about everything as much as I can. I hope this gives me the opportunity to broaden my perspectives and teach me new things.

I joined this group because I read a lot but I have to say I don't know much about feminist literature and I'd like to know more about it. So if you know some good books, tell me!

I am very excited when I knew that Emma has started this Feminist book club. It has always been my dream to belong to a book club where I can share my ideas and hear what other readers have to say. There is not many of that here in our place. Hopefully we can start up one here someday so that we can cultivate more minds through reading and discussion. Also, I am always looking for something interesting to read, something though-provoking, something that can help me grow as a better human being.
I am so thrilled that people, especially women, from all over the world has this place where they can voice out their opinion without fearing prejudice or condemnation. Reading your pieces has warmed my heart! Good luck to us all! xx

I first discovered Emma Watson when she played Hermione in the Harry Potter movies. I recently learned from my friend who is a big fan of her, that she is a feminist. I am glad to join this group and to state that I support gender equality.

I joined this club because I'm a huge fan of Emma and I love her work. She is so inspiring and she has made more aware of the problems around the world and she has made me want to do a change in the world.
I hope to learn about strong women and men who stands up for gender equality. I want to know that there is people out there making a change, and I want to learn how I can make a change.

I'm Federica, I'm 25 and I'm from Italy!
I'm studying languages and literatures, so I've always loved reading. Last years I read Virginia Woolf's book "A room of one's own" and since than I've been looking for books who talk about women, their strength and their rights. I'm also a fan of HP so I love Emma Watson, and when I read of this book club, I decided I had to be part of it!
I hope to find some interesting book and to read everyone's opinion!
Have a nice day folks!

I'm Jennifer from North Carolina, U.S.A. And I'm 18 years old.
I joined this group because I am an international studies major and am extremely interested in global issues, specifically those that fall into feminism. I also would like to have a group where I am accountable for what I am reading since I do not read too often outside of class work.
I agree completely with Chrystal when it comes to the history of feminism. I find it extremely fascinating and can't wait to learn more about the topic!

My name is Alison, I'm 23 and I'm French.
I'm a graduate in English and American studies, starting my PhD thesis very soon.
I decided to join this book club because:
1) I love Emma Watson
2)My studies (and my interests) have brought me closer to the role of women throughout history so I'm deeply interested in powerful female figures who rose up above their standards to make their voices heard. I'm notably making reference to Anne Boleyn or Elizabeth I for instance.
3)I'm a bookworm so this is my element. Besides, I find female writers do a very good job e.g. J. K. Rowling!
I wish you all good reading and I'm looking forward to reading you.
-A

So thank you for this great chance and I can't wait to start!!
P.D: I apologize for my grammar and spelling mistakes. I'm still studying English.

I joined this group because I love reading, I am a feminist, gender equality is an issue close to my heart, and I had just bought My Life on the Road last night so discovering this group today was perfect! :) I'm looking forward to sharing this experience over the year with what looks like a LOT of like minded people.

My name is Karina and I live in Denmark. I am a book lover, book-blogger, and I am always on search for new literature. I find the history of feminism fascinating in theoretical books but also in fictions. I study comparative literature and love it! One of my favorite writers is Jane Austen. I joined this group because I always looking for new inspirations :0)

I am a huge fan of Emma and really admire her for her work with the U.N and everything she's doing for feminism.
I hope by joining this club and reading all these books I'll enrich my knowledge about this subject and enlighten myself. I also am glad that Emma has created this space where we can all discuss and share our ideas! Looking forward to this journey.
Happy reading everyone!

I'm Simone,a 19 years old female from China(i did not see much Chinese here...).
I love reading, and i am very excited when i know Emma found this bookclub!
I want to read books about feminism and maybe make some friends here.

I´m Sara, I´m 20 years old and I am from Portugal. I´m live in Madeira. I am grauduate in Comunication in my university.
Since yonguer I loving reading classic books. Recently I began to read Jane Austen´s books. I think that women don´t have the same rights of men. And that should change.
I joined this book club because I want to read more feminism books, and because I a loving writer to. My biggest dream is to be a famous writer. I loving Emma Watson, she is a great actress and she is a exemple to. I am hoping reading great books.
Good day for everybody!

My name is Andrea and I'm from Spain. I am a book lover, a doctor-to-be and someone who fights for gender equality. So, when I saw this on Emma's FB I immediately joined. I love learning and reading, so this feels like a perfect opportunity and a great way to start 2016.

Hello, everyone! My second name is Savannah, but my first name is Dylan. Way to start things off with a good impression, right? Having my second name up instead of my first one. That is only for safety reasons, I assure you, but I am sure I can trust everyone here. I truly love my name and I own it because, frankly, it rocks! Plus, I would not be me if I was not called Dylan.
I deeply admire Blake Lively for naming her daughter James, and I am all for "breaking the rules" and giving female children names which are typically associated with males and visa versa. I also enjoy informing people that I am not a tomboy because my favorite color is blue, and that, many years ago, boys wore pink and girls wore blue. Only lately have the gender stereotypes with males and females changed.
I joined this group because I am a big supporter and advocate for gender equality. Not as big an advocate as Emma Watson, that is for sure, but I make sure both my male and female friends are treated equally. I am there for my guy friends when they are upset, and there for my girls when they get the urge to do something which society deems they shouldn't because of their gender. These ingrained ideals about men and woman are so annoying, don't you think? I definitely think so.
Anywho, I am veering off topic! I am from New Zealand, and, at the moment, it is not as cold as you might think. It is very, very warm. Next year I go off to university, where I hope to study a double bachelor in Journalism and Korean Studies. One of my dreams is to travel to Korea with the intention of promoting gender equality. Woman still have a very traditional role in South Korea, and I would like to start changing the way they are treated (such as how parents expect their children to marry and have children at young ages).
In the entertainment industry, pay between genders is vastly different, another thing I wish to shed national and international light on via studying journalism and obtaining a job in the media industry myself. I have even started teaching myself Korean ahead of time, and I am looking for part time work to fund going to a night school to learn the Korean language. This is all while I am still at high school and taking a six month course at a distance learning college.
The main reason for me joining this group is for learning. I may already be a supporter of equality, but there is still so much to learn. So much advice can be gained from talking to fellow men and woman in this group, and I believe it can be a wonderful place filled with inspiration and courage that I can draw from. It is truly an honor to be reading and discussing books with you all, and I hope I can make some great friends here, like I have done in my previous years on goodreads.

My nickname is Vicky, nice to meet you so much. I love to reading and writing and I'm Thai reader. My dream is be designer and be the author. I wish we can be friends with me.
Thanks you!

My name is Maya and I'm from Syria. I'm a med student and reading is my passion ( well among other things)
The idea of Our Shared Shelf is so important especially coming from Emma W. Feminism is part of a great cause to make our world a better place.
I'm looking forward to get to know you all lovely peeps.
spread the love and bookish vibes!
xx

xoxo Nadine

My name is Sara. I am education major with a minor in history. In just a couple years I will be hopefully teaching history at a middle school somewhere. Oh and I turn 21 in like two days I am from America. Books for as long as I can remember have been a part of my life. I can't wait to explore new books and discuss old loves with you guys!!

I joined this book club because i am a feminist and i find that Emma has become one of my favourite people through her inspirational work with the UN and HeForShe.
I hope to read some great work, expecially stuff i wouldn't have come across on my own.
I am very inspired by the poster above me Nadine's point that we can all do something in this world - never change that outlook no matter what the world throws at you in the future young one!

I'm Suki and Im from Thailand. I am 31 years old and have always wanted be in a book club! I'm extra excited that this club will focus on feminism. I witness gender inequality around me all the time in this developing country and am hoping one day I'll be able to contribute to improving this gap. I look forward to hearing how people approach this issue around the world through the discussions we can potentially have here. :)

I'm Kirsty and I live in Glasgow. I joined because I love to read but actually haven't read a lot of feminist writing even though I consider myself a feminist! and thought this would be a good way to expand my reading.

1. I love to read
2. I believe in gender equality in education
3. I want to know more about feminism
Hello everyone! I'm Andrea, I'm from Italy and i'll turn 21 in March.
I've joined this club to try to learn all that I can from the knowledge of others over this important subject matter. Gender equality and feminism have interested me for almost two years now, and yet I couldn't be able to find the right path to enlightment. Now, though, that Emma gave us this amazing opportunity, I couldn't but scream "YES" from the bottom of my heart. I can't wait to start this amazing and enriching journey with all of you and start changing the world, page by page.

This thread was a great idea! My name is Juli, I'm currently studying an MLitt in Medieaval English and am eyeing a PhD in the role of women in Anglo-Saxon Literature. Yes, I'm building myself a very viable career... ;) Next to that I blog about books.
The need for a book club in which feminist-minded women can recommend each other books that changed their lives and perceptions of themselves is so important because literature reflects reality. And it's always important to get to know others who think like you!
Lovely to meet you all :D

I'm more than excited about this Feminist book club. I can't think about anything else than starting to read My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem. This book sounds very interesting.
"I like books that aren't just lovely but that have memories in themselves. Just like playing a song, picking up a book again that has memories can take you back to another place or another time."
-Heini from Finland

My name is Jessica, I'm from Vermont, USA and I will be turning 21 soon. I'm currently an undergrad student studying Wildlife Biology.
I have always been a fan of Emma and I am a voracious reader, so when I found out she was leading a book club, I just had to join!
I can't wait to see where this goes! Happy 2016 everyone!!

I joined this club because I just wrote about it for a news site (Here ya go: http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/...) and also because I want to regain my love for reading (which should be important because I write for a living!!!). I just don't have time for reading anymore, which is disappointing because I used to be bookworm.
I also want to learn more about feminism and read more works that tackles that. I also hope to write in-depth stories about women and equality.
Thanks!

I've joined the group because:
a) I love reading, and my new year's resolution is to read 52+ books this year.
b) I consider myself a feminist, but not one with very well informed opinions! So I am here to learn and discuss. :)
Amieza;; It seems like we've joined the group for pretty similar reasons. :) What aspects of gender equality in education have been lacking in your experience?
Kirsty;; Haha, I think you speak for a lot of us. :b What sort of stuff do you usually read?
Suki;; I am sure you are already contributing to improving the gap, by positively influencing the attitudes of those around you. :) What are the main issues in Thailand you think need to be addressed?
Eek I am sure in the time I've spent writing this so many others will have posted! All I can say is hi! And promise to catch up on posts now. :b

So hi and good bye I'm late to work

Last, but not least, i'm here because of the community. Being able to talk about these kind of books with women from all over the world is not common, and i love that. So thank you Emma for creating this space, and see you all in the book discussion posts :)

Looking forward to get started!

My name is Renée, I'm 16 from Queensland, Australia.
I joined this book club because Emma Watson is a huge inspiration to me and i hope to acheive a new understanding of feminism, and also read some new amazing books as i love reading!
I am also extremely interested in the work Emma has done with the UN and hope to become as strong a woman as she is today.

I joined this book club because usually I do a lot of scrolling through Facebook reading articles about the horrid state of the world. But once in a while I come across some good things and that's how I found this post from Emma about this book club. I feel this is just what I needed to give me a little bit of faith back in the world. Emma is an inspiration and hope to learn some great things from her and from the people in this group :)

I am a huge fan of Emma Watson. She has been someone I look up to for as long as I can remember.
Although I do not read as often or as much as compared to everyone here, but I want to take this opportunity to become a more active reader. I also hope that I'll be able to broaden my perspective on feminism, gender as well as society :)
Thank you so much Emma for inspiring so many of us :) I'll make sure this opportunity does not go to waste.

Peace and Love ❤️
-E

I equally love reading and writing and this group is a great chance to broaden my knowledge about strong female characters that could represent potential role models for our and next generations. I believe it's not easy to come up with well-balanced female character nowadays, there's too much that's being asked by media and it often ends up giving us superhuman heroines that end up being everything but relatable for the actual audience.

Let's be honest. I joined this club because Emma Watson started it and she is probably one of my biggest heroes. But truly, I am excited about it and hope to branch out. I've never really participated in a book club so I'm hoping to learn a lot and make some friends on here. I can't wait to read new books that I never would have picked up otherwise. I can't wait to see what other people from all over the world have to say when we've all just read the same story. It's going to be so fun!

My name is Sylvia, I live in Michigan, USA and I'm 47 years old. I'm joining this club because I love to read, but have never read from a feminist perspective. I think it will be interesting to broaden my reading horizons, but especially to interact with all of you!
Looking forward to getting started.
