Introduction

I am really glad I join this community! Since my childhood, books have been an amzing ressource to me at any time of my life. I started getting interested by feminism with the book "Lean In" of Sheryl Sandberg and I really look forward to have more books to read about this subject that touches me ! So far I read amazing books about french women but I want to discover more about other women all around the world !
I am a great fan of Emma and wish to act more in the future for men/women equality !
(please excuse me if my english is not perfect, i am learning ;) )
I can't wait to begin !
Hi! I'm Marci 43 yrs young, currently live in Raleigh NC USA originally from Peoria IL USA. My family is originally from Lebanon so we're scattered around the world. I look forward to getting to know all of you. Excited to read our first book, heard really good things.

I am the same as you "new to the study of feminism".
I'm drawn to Emma because she seems open and is forming and questioning her opinions...that makes me feel as ease!

I'm Annika, I'm 23 years old and live in Wuppertal, Germany. I'm currently getting a degree in business and no matter where I end up working - I will likely have to work harder to get ahead and still get paid less than my male colleagues. And that is probably the smallest issue women around the world have to deal with! For me it's out of the question that we still need feminism but most people around me don't seem to agree (or care).
Like everyone here, I admire Emma and the work she's doing! I am also a huge bookworm and love reading all different kinds of things. So thank you, Emma, for starting this! I'm looking forward to discussing some great books with all of you! :-)

Joined the book club to be introduced to new books and new ideas. I hope to learn more about equality and feminist points of view and learn how to communicate my own ideas on the subject as I enter into a career field known to be predominately male.

My name is Katja and I hail from the small Scandinavian country Denmark.
I'm very happy to be part of this group and I really look forward to the discussions. I joined this group because I love to read and I believe equality is so important. I'm particular interested in indigenous feminists whose works are really important! They are often left out of the discussion of feminism and I think it's important to include their work in the discussion on feminism and equality. Aileen Moreton-Robinson is one author whose work is really worth reading.
I look forward to getting to know you all during our discussions.

My name is Sara . I live in Fes , Morocco. I'm a computer science engineering student , i will get my diploma (if everything goes as planned ) by the end of the year . In a field like mine , you find yourself doubling the effort just to pass as a regular computer science student just because you're a woman . Equality is a topic near to my heart , and i believe that every human being has the right to feel equal to the others ; equal opportunities , equal pay etc .
I'm also a big reader , i can devour a book in a matter of a day . I'm delighted to see this opportunity that Emma created .
It's truly amazing , i have so much to learn about feminism .
And i'm pleased to think that i will get to learn it here , with you ladies and with books .

why I join this group? firstly is bcz of Emma, secondly I like reading, thirdly I want to learn more about feminism. I want to show people around me that women are not less strong than men
everyone, Lets be friend!

I joined this group because Emma was the person to finally solidify my belief in feminism, and I need to learn more!! Its always hard to know what to read, especially on specific subjects, so I thought this would be an ideal opportunity to educate myself.
Looking forward to all the reading!

I'm an aspiring writer and I joined this group in order to be exposed to books and people who could give me a broader understanding of gender equality in all its ramifications. I hope that by learning more about this important subject, I'll be better equipped to write more complex and compelling characters.

I am here, because I think equality is still a major problem. Like almost everyone here, I admire how Emma has used her fame and position where she is, to do something good. I want to understand what feminism really is and how I can make a difference. I want to get new perspectives and to educate myself.

I'm Martyn, 38 from Britain. I'm many things, I manage a small manufacturing plant and I write novels. I wouldn't call myself a huge Emma Watson fan. I thought she played Hermione very well in the Potter films and I admire her for her work in the UN.
I think I joined this group because it was nice to see something positive promoting feminism. I've seen too much anti-feminist rhetoric on social media lately. Trying to label people and ideas as femi-nazis. I think we'd live in a better world if it had more equality.
I try to promote feminism in my fiction. It's not really a theme as such but my female characters tend not to be the damsel in distress types and my gravian (dark elf) society is a bizarre mirror of human society with females being the dominant gender, holding all power and authority and treating males as subordinate, almost like slaves. It seems absurd but if you look at British society 100 years ago it's only a topsy turvy reflection of how things used to be, but with the genders reversed.

I'm Charles. I'm 29. I'm in the United States.
I joined the club because it's a neat idea, and I hope to encourage others to read more books with a gender equality theme.
Crystal, I love bell hooks! She's a fantastic thought leader.

I'm Kunal, a 20 yr old male from India.
I got into feminism at the ripe age of 12 and have been studying it's origin, development and aesthetics. They spark great interest in me!
The most wonderful thing I feel when I'm reading anything feminist is the realisation that most of the things the author is talking about are already known to me! And I've been practising them in my daily life!
I'm not gonna talk about how I think feminism is important. Because then it will lose all credibility. It's no use to justify it's importance in our world, especially in this era. Just spread it. Spread it like wildfire. Burn the inequalities down.
"She is her own person and she is beautiful. She loves the way she is and she deserves the individuality she longs for. She shall not burn just to make you feel warm"
Looking forward to have some fun here :)
Looking forward to gain knowledge and insight :D
Looking forward to feminism :*
Looking forward to more of Emma ;)

I look forward to reading and learning along with you all!

My name is Tomas, 21 and I'm from Belgium. Full-blown literature addict and have been a fan of Emma's work in the film industry for a long time, and admire her even more for the work she's doing in the UN, she's truly inspirational to me.
I can't wait to read all these new books and learn new things and to discuss the books we read. I believe I have much to learn about feminism and I believe it's very important.

My name is Daniela, I'm 20 years old and from Austria.
I've always been a huge fan of Emma's work and in the last few months I've looked closer into her work for the UN.
As I'm studying Cultur and Social Anthropology I already read a few essays on Genderstudies. I thought it'd be a good idea to join as I'm interested in doing my BA-dissertation on gender equality and I'm hoping to get a lot of ideas for my work out of this group :)

I joined this book club as I am a proud feminist and would love to be introduced to books I haven't read before.
I signed up to Goodreads purely for this group so it is so exciting to meet so many like minded people and I can't wait for this book club to start!

I'm currently studying Journalism and international studies and I hope to use this degree to fight for equality and to promote education for women around the world as I believe it is the most important tool for generating equality between the genders!
Emma Watson is such a beautifully influential young woman that has used her hard earned fame to change the world and to empower women and for that I am truly grateful!
I love reading so this book club is an amazing opportunity to combine so many of my loves, feminism, Emma Watson, reading and writing!
Let's all change the world together, one book at a time

My name is David, I am from Sweden. I don't read as much outside of studies anymore, but one extra text a month should be fine!
I am an active feminist and work for equality for all (what do you call it in English? When it is not genderwise, but including ethnicity, culture, religion, disabilities(/functionalities), sex, gender, etc?) at my uni. Also a long time fan of Emma's, so I love the chance of being able to contribute to something she is doing!

Also I read a lot and like discussing the books and papers I read. So I'm really looking forward discussing feminism and the books we're going to read with you all! :)

I'm Alona from the Philippines. My goal this year is to read more feminist books to educate myself. I'm planning to buy more of these titles and I think it's great that we have this group on Goodreads. :)
Also, I'm a huge fan of Emma. :)
I'm looking forward to reading with all of you. :D

I joined this group partly as I love reading and discussing books but am a bit too lazy to join a book group which requires going to meetings, but also as I am always disappointed in the lack of awareness of female authors. As a feminist I have made a concerted effort to read more fiction and non-fiction by women over the last few years, and these have been some of the most powerful works I have come across.

I'm Flore, I'm 25 and I'm a medical student in Bordeaux, south France.
I love books (there are my companions since I'm little!) and I consider myself as a feminist, but awkwardly I think I have never read any books about it! So this group is perfect, this is such a good idea, thank you for creating it!

My name is Tina, I am 23 years old from Stockholm, Sweden. I'm in my last term on my bachelor in Business Administration.
I want to read more than I do and think this will be a good way to inspire myself to read more. I think Emma is a role model and I think she probably has great taste in books cause she likes to read so much.
Hope this group will help me with the inspiration. Glad to be here!
Tina

I am Amberley and I am 18, I live in England and study a degree in English Literature! I have such a keen interest in feminism, feminist texts, essays, anything to do with equality! It is such an important issue, and needs to be explored!! There is so much to explore with feminism and I have joined this club because it is such an important issue. I hope to gain a greater understanding of feminism and talk to people who share the view of the importance of the issue :) Have a good day!!!! :)

! I am Guillain, i'm a French student on High school. I live in a city in Savoy. I have lived and travelled in many other places, as Martinique, Berlin, London, Munich, Prague, Madrid, and Paris. I'm in some way "full of foreign cultures". I have discovered the Heforshe cause by the speech of Emma Watson 2 years ago and I've immediately donated to Heforshe.
I've join this books club to discover other point of view about feminist and gender equality and for improve my English level by the books themselves or by the chats.
Gender equality is a job of all of us.
(-I hope my French introduction made in you a positive feeling to me ;) )

My name is Miriam and I'm from a little city in Spain. I'm 22 and finishing my degree in bussiness administration.
I've always loved Emma, reading and spreading feminism.
I want to improve a bit my English, read awesome books and discover the world through the eyes of other people.
When I read Emma's idea, I knew I had to be there. So, here I am!
And happy birthday, Ellie!

I'm Sophia, a 22 year old aspiring actress/2nd year law student!
I'm a passionate reader, beyond the limitations of a hobby I guess haha, this group sounds like something i'd be into as i'm really interested in the topic of Feminism.
P.s. I'm also a die hard Harry Potter fan! :)

Hi there!! My name is Ester, I'm 18 and I'm from Italy. In Italy feminism doesn't exist beacause everybody's scared to explain their topics about feminism. I joined in this group beacause I love read and I am a feminist!
Let's read this book!!!
Let's read this book!!!

I'm Ana from Mexico city, brand new 30yo
I'm just a woman in the continuous path of self discovery and evolution... just bought De Beauvoir's Second Sex and really wished to have smart women to discuss it with, a second later EW opened this group and voilá here we are!!
Hope to get to know brilliant women through great books!!

I am a big fan of yours since childhood. Definitely because of harry potter series. I am a firm believer in equality. And I am a feminist.
Reading is my hobby. I consider books open doors of knowledge. And I would love to become part of your club. :)

I am Jafreen Alamgir from Asian University for Women. I love Emma for her nerdy and neck-top role in Harry Potter movies. And I am delighted to know that Emma is working in the UN women in a number of ways for equality.
Moreover, I am happy to join this discussion which Emma has opened. Hope to meet new and interesting people here to talk about books

I'm Hannah from Germany and 19 years old, finishing school in March. The topic of feminism is new to me but I am very interested in it.
And I love Emma Watson and her work with UN.

I study norse language and literature. I have always loved to read, ever since my father took to much time getting through Harry Potter, the books he read for me. In high school I was in the IB Diploma program, taking both English and Norwegian literature courses. This was where I came across my favorite book, To kill a mockingbird by Harper Lee. I have since re-read this book many times, growing ever more in love with the strong main character Scout. I even did a paper on all the strong female characters in the novel, and their influence.
I joined this group to get influenced by what other people read, and as I can see, these influences will probably come from all over the world, which is awesome! Through this group, both me and my boyfriend can expand our literary knowledge.
Cannot wait to get started!

My name is Elizabeth. I am 23 years old. I am from Canada but currently live in Wales, United Kingdom.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Women's and Gender Studies and Human Rights, with minors in Anthropology and Sociology. I did my undergraduate research on war rape trials before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. It was a discourse analysis from a radical and postmodern feminist perspective. I am currently studying law at Bangor University and will be graduating in July! My law research is on children and adolescent mental health rights from a feminist perspective. In September, I will be returning to Bangor University to study a LLM (masters of law) in International Human Rights and Criminal Law.
My entire life I have been a feminist. I identify as a radical and postmodern feminist. Catherine MacKinnon and Gloria Steinem are my inspirations, as well as Canadian suffragette Nellie McClung. It is my life dream to meet Catherine MacKinnon. I am an LGBTQ+ ally. I believe strongly in international women's rights. It is my dream career to work for the ICRC or UN on women's rights, particularly on the effect of armed conflict on women.
I volunteered for two years on a sexual assault/rape crisis helpline and for three years at a women's shelter. I am a member of the Women's Equality Party of the UK. I have attended various feminist conferences, including Feminism in London and NUS Women in Leadership.
I am a cofounder of a sorority. Many of my sisters are members of this reading club as well!
I joined because since starting law school, I have missed the feminist discussions that I so regularly had when I was studying Women's Studies. Also, I am obviously a fan of Emma Watson, both for her acting and her UN work.

My name is Sarah, I'm 18 years old and I'm from France
I've began to act for gender equality since the beginning of high school when my law teacher explained me that women don't have the same income as men for the same job. I was so chocked and felt powerless. How ? Why ? I couldn't even talk ! So I began to thinks about it a lot. And a lot. Why? And suddenly I realized how many stereotypes about gender there are and I didn't realized it until this time. I asked myself how could I not see this. The answer was simple, we are raised by people that are also prisoners of these stereotypes and they don't saw them since it has always been like that. So I talked about it with people I know : my parents, my sister, my family, some at school.
And it was hard in asmuch as people don't listen you seriously when you're 15.
My parents slowly began to understand that it wasn't some kind of adolescent crises. So I have talked to loads of persons and discuss about gender equality. Some people called me man-hated and didn't really understand what my message was, they didn't paid attention, I was only a 16 little girl. Finally pupils in my high school saw that I was serious and I debated with boys of my school to see what they think about it. I explained them my opinion and they learned that feminism wasn't against man and we wanted equality, not some kind of superiority. I already invited a boy to the restaurant and paid for it. He was surprised and I though that the situation was unusual and I realized that traditions are hard to defeat.
Now I'm a student in an engeneering school and I began all over again to try to explain the HeForShe movement. Some people took me as Femen, they thought that it was feminism so I told them the definition of feminism. But in a school with 95% of boys, it's quite difficult. But they are respectful, they tease me about it but I know they're not against it at all. It's just that they think other boys will laugh at them if they support feminism. So to me that's a part of the job we have to do.

I am Mariel, 26 years old from Bolivia, currently working in London.
I joined this bookclub not only because I love reading but because I believe that we all can keep learning and spreading the word about feminism and what it implies. Since stereotyping, objectification, infringements of human rights, or gender or sexuality based oppression it’s a feminist issue
Nice to meet you all of you, looking forward to many discussions
