I've finished The "Double Indemnity" Murder: Ruth Snyder, Judd Gray, and New York's Crime of the Century, so now I'm reading Ron Hansen's A Wild Surge of Guilty Passion, a fictionalized version of the Snyder-Gray story.

I requested this from the library when it was a group read (months ago) and I finally got it. Better late than never. :)

message 405: by Saeed (new)

Saeed just finished The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest byStieg Larsson and I liked it very much.
the first 2 books were a bit slow (in my opinion), but the story took off in book 3.

totally recommended

SherryRose | 930 comments I'm listening to A Wicked Snow. So far it's ok, not great. I recommend reading, rather than listening. The narrator isn't very good. I think parts of the story are intriguing.

The Rabbit Factory was one of my best book reads ever! You will enjoy the second book in the series as well !

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" | 831 comments Currently I'm reading Cruel Justice by William Bernhardt. So far it has been a first-rate legal thriller.

message 421: by Bill (new)

Bill I finished The Museum of Dr. Moses: Tales of Mystery and Suspense by Joyce Carol Oates, an excellent collection of short stories. I'm not sure what category of mystery they fall under, guess from the title, they are suspense. This was my first exposure to Oates' writing and I was so impressed with how she creates her stories, her description and her ability to leave me unsettled. The Title story and The Hunter were probably my favourites, but they were all excellent.

Zippergirl Arab Jazz Arab Jazz by Karim Miské

Beautiful cover and a murder in a multi-culti neighborhood in Paris piqued my interest, but I was a little disappointed when I found that Arab Jazz was translated from the original French.

I need not have feared, the prose whirls and whooshes and deftly captures the life of a damaged young Muslim who buys paperback murder mysteries by the kilo (literally) and is suspected of murdering the young woman he might have loved, if only. It's a netgalley ARC.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10022 comments I finished Before I Go to Sleep by S.J. Watson. Christine Lucas has amnesia; she's lost her long-term memories and loses her short-term memories every night. Who can she trust? This 'thriller' has an interesting premise but is a bit too slow for me.
3 stars.

I was considering this book until I watched the film the other night. The suspense element seemed to give up and die about halfway through and I was left feeling "is that it?"

Keep in mind that Hollywood tends to change things when books become films. The book might be a completely different ballgame.

The book's better than the movie Esther. More suspense/ambiguity about what's going on. Since you've already seen the movie though.....you'll have the scoop.

Tom Mathews | 1001 comments I finished off two totally unrelated books this weekend. First is an ARC of The Other Side of Silence by Philip Kerr. This was a surprisingly good spy tale that has more twists than a John le Carré novel. My review is here.

This morning I finished Everything That Rises Must Converge: Stories, a brilliant collection of short stories by Flannery O’Connor. My review for that one is here.

I am the type of person who can always guess a plot twist in a film - sometimes I can even predict dialogue - so there has to be something extra to catch me and this story didn't seem to have it. I won't reject the book out of hand but I have so many others on my shelf it is slipping down the priorities list.
