Hello everyone! I was just wondering if I started a book today and finished it in January of that would be considered part of this challenge?

Yes. You can't use 1 book in more than 1 category.

This year some people used a book for multiple prompts. It's a personal challenge so there really aren't any rules, you do what works for you ;) also I know lots of ppl have started a more difficult book early and counting it

Hmm... yes I agree... but my interpretation is that if there are 40 prompts you should be reading 40 books. IMHO.

Exactly! I didn't double up any but I also wouldn't reread anything unless it was a book club pick (because I didn't pick those) or use audiobooks, but doesn't make it incorrect to do any of those! It's supposed to be a fun personal challenge :) do what's right to you!

I didn't say it was incorrect. Nothing is incorrect since it's just a way for us to read a more diverse group of books.

However, my interpretation is that the challege is for you to read 40 separate books.

Tara, if I'd cut out audiobooks, it'd cut my list way down. LOL!

That's the beauty of this challenge is everyone gets to make it their own!

I used one book per prompt but if I used the first book in a series for a prompt I made sure to continue the series. For example, in the love triangle prompt I read Matched (book 1). And I also read Crossed (book 2) and Reached (book 3). And I didn't use those books for any of the other prompts.

The exception so far is book started but never finished. I used Miss Peregrines and forced my way through it. I don't think there's any way I will be finishing that series. Although...maybe if I get the audio books that would make it more bearable.

I hate starting series but not finishing them and the last thing I wanted to do was start all these series just for the sake of the challenge but then forget plot lines as the year progressed.

I'm not sure if I'll take the same approach to 2016 challenge. I think I will because it worked out really well for me this time around.

I hate it too but I actually (ugh) had to read two books that were SECOND in a series one for book club and one that came out the year I was born and I hated both so I don't know if I can bring myself to read the rest lol

I'm doing it a little differently than other people, because my goal is to read 52 books this year, and the list is only 41 books. I wanted some flexibility so I can read more books that maybe don't fit the challenge. I'm going to allow 1 book to count for two categories, but not more. So for instance, I'm counting All The Light We Cannot See as a book set in Europe and a book with a blue cover, but I won't count it for the other categories it could fit into, like NY Times best seller.

What I did last year was: one book per prompt (3 for the trilogy obviously), and no two books from the same writer.

I was going to do the same this year (allowing authors that were in the 2015 challenge though), but then I foolishly challenged a friend at doing the 2016 challenge twice... So I'going to read TWO books per prompt! :-)

Quick question about the "book of the month" prompts. Would you still count it if the book applies but fits a different prompt?

For example, I want to read Me Before You for my prompt "A book recommended by someone you just met", which is the topic for May. Would another book recommended by someone I met, but applying toward a different prompt, still count? I know most of these challenges are pretty open to whatever we want, but I want to stay in "the spirit of the challenge" as much as possible.

How many people are ticking off more than one prompt after reading a book? I don't interpret the challenge tht way, but I wonder how the rest of you are handling it.

I'm only using one prompt per book. i agree that this is the way the challenge was intended. I also plan to read far more than 41 books this year so it shouldn't be a problem. For those who read less it might make more sense to double up.

I didn't quite finish the challenge last year (47 books, so close) so I wouldn't say I'm a heavy as a reader as a lot of you here, but I am still doing 1 prompt per book. I don't think there's anything wrong with doing multiple prompts per book, but it didn't feel right to me. As Rachel said above I'm trying to keep with "the spirit of the challenge". I'm excited to push myself and it just feels more complete this way for me.

I'm with you, Kaci! I didn't finish last year either. I just worked through it, saving the more difficult ones 'till last. I seem to be progressing better this year than last.

Some do. Some count a single book for multiple prompts within the same challenge.

Personally, I am doing Popsugar as well as an AtoZ title challenge. I use the same book for both challenges whenever possible. I'll even pick one book over another if the title will fit in my title challenge.

Is there a page count minimum? I was thinking of reading Poe's The Raven for the book not read since high school...but it is only 64 pages. My other club requires books be at least 100 pages but I didn't see that criteria for Pop Sugar.

I'm doing three challenges (which is too many, imo, and I will cut back next year), and I'm checking off only one category per book. I may not "finish" all three challenges, but that doesnt really matter.

And no, I have no minimum page count for my choices.

I've been looking all over the threads trying to find a past note about posting book titles, and for the life of me can't find it anywhere. Could someone please explain to me again how I get my book title "highlighted" in my comments. Where you can click on the title and it leads to the books "goodread" page. Sorry!

Kim: If you use the app, you can't use the add book/author feature. That tool is only available from the full website when accessed by a web browser.

If accessing from a web browser, when you are writing a comment, there will be a tool tip at the top right that says "add book/author." When you click on that, it will open a search function. Select whether you are adding a book/author and then search accordingly. When you've found the title/author you want, you add it. There is also a tool tip for "some html OK" if you want to italicize or hyperlink within your comments.

I think there were some people who did that this year! The challenge is completely up to you as far as how you do it. If you want to start out just picking a few prompts that's just fine. You can always add in more if you decide to later.

I did that this year with a smaller group. I was pregnant and cannot read much when pregnant (I think it's a hormonal thing, I have zero attention span) so picked 20 prompts and had a goal of 30 books.

If I start a book with multiple authors today but drag it out until finishing it on the first can I count it for 2017? What can I say I'm itching to start and managed to get my page turning fingers on the perfect book and it's yelling at me from the coffee table!!

Jessica this is your challenge to handle as you wish. I know there are quite a few people who have already started books they intend to finish after the first of the year and count toward the challenge. There's really no wrong way to do things because it is up to the individual! :)

Is there a easy way to find books with authors who use pseudonyms, or do I have to google every time?

How do I know the narrator is unreliable?

A book set in a hotel needs to be in there all the time or could it be just the beginning? Can I consider an Inn a hotel?

Last but not least: what if I switch some of the advanced with regulars tasks? I'm having trouble finding books to match and in the advanced list I already have some choices!

Sorry to bother, but it is fun to have someone to talk about those little things, I wish I knew about this group last year!

There are forums in the group in which we all talk about the prompts. That's how I get help finding my books for each prompt or I search in Google. As for the book in a hotel I took it as a book that is based in a hotel. If you want to do something different with it go ahead as it is your own personal challenge. As for a non human war, I never thought of that! I wonder if a book I have falls into that category. Thank you!!!

Most of your questions you'll find suggestions in those threads. The hotel one is up to you, and so is the switching prompts one. This is your personal challenge, pop sugar won't press charges if you interpret differently or make your own rules

I love the idea of Biggest Letdown as a category! And I agree about The Vanishing Year. I took it on vacation with me in Dec. and usually save the books I am most looking forward to for vacation...such a bummer.
