Questions?
For the prompt.. "a book that you borrowed or was given to you as a gift." Can this be a book I won in a giveaway?
Question.. if I start a book now can I count it for the 2018 challenge? I didn't participate in the 2017 popsugar challenge.. this is my first time.

Several of us have used that trick in the past to get a headstart on longer books.
Some people will only count books started in 2018.
It is entirely up to you how you want to handle your challenge!
Crumb, if you want more thoughts on that check out the "I'm too excited for 2018" thread. A couple talked about starting early.
So I was very unsuccessful in the 2017 Popsugar challenge but this is the year for me! So If anyone can help me with any suggestions with the following categories:1. A book involving a heist
2. A book set at sea
3. a book about feminism
4. a book set on a different planet
i would greatly appreciate the help!
Should we put our actual books read in our "General > Post your 2018 reading lists!" post or start a new post? I want to start with a clean slate when I actually start reading but I can clear that one out when the time comes.

for the 'A book at Sea' many people are reading Moby Dick. I also think anything on the Titanic would work also.
As for feminism, many are reading 'A Handmaid's Tale'
Hi! My son who is 8 saw my challenge and wanted in. Has anyone seen a fun challenge like this for kids? He reads at a 5th/ 6th grade level so while not YA yet, it doesn't have to be picture books. For example his favorite author is Roald Dahl.
I did this one this year with my 3 year old!! Check out the children's lit thread. I'm planning on doing it again too.

Is the children's lit thread in the popsugar header?
So towards the middle of the year I'll (hopefully) be back in school with a 60-90 min drive and full time days and weeks so reading will be difficult... how do we feel about audio books counting towards the reading challenge?
If you are OK with it, listen away. It is a reading challenge, but audio books, movies, or osmosis all seem like suitable replacements for actual reading.

I cheat a little and add them to goodreads as kindle books so I can get the page count ;) But definitely audiobooks work!
Most of my books are audio lately. So far this year I've read 102 books and only 19 were physical. I do mark them as audio. It's interesting, if I look at my Stats page it only shows 5890 pages, but on the My Year in Books page it says 25,791 pages.
Thanks all. I'm definitely going to do my darnedest to read physical books, heck I'm not even on the ebook bandwagon yet NVM audio books! It's good to know if I HAD to listen, it's not frowned upon :)
Switching to ebooks and audios are the only reason I get any reading done at all these days. I always have my phone handy, so if the baby falls asleep on me, I’ve always got my book handy since it’s just on my phone. And both of the girls seem to fall asleep faster with my audiobooks on in the background while I rub their backs.
It’s an individual challenge so you do what you need to :) people make their decisions about whether to include audiobooks, rereads, shorter books (like children’s books for instance). I think that for me the key is making your own guidelines early and decide what you’re going to count and then count it!
Chinook wrote: "both of the girls seem to fall asleep faster with my audiobooks on in the background while I rub their backs"They are often the only way I can sleep. Best cure for insomnia EVAH!
What websites are you all using besides goodreads to get books for the 2018 challenge? Im using librarything and fantastic fiction.
Do you mean to physically get the books? I bought a couple used from thriftbooks.com but mostly I get them through my library:)
Hello! This is my first challenge. Do we have to do the prompts in order or can we pick how we want to do it?Thanks!
I have a "book" about Hubert Humphrey. It is not a "novel". Does that count as a book/novel based on a real person? Thanks.
The prompt is suggesting that you read a fictional account of a real person. Is your book fiction? If so, yes. If it’s a non-fic than it’s not based on a real person, it’s just about a real person.

My mother flunked Senior Year US Government due to flipping off her teacher and walking out of class, and later finished her diploma requirements in night school in 1978 while she was pregnant with me, but she always considered 1976 as the "year she graduated high school" and went to all her HS Reunions until she died.
So, I think that rule is totally up to interpretation.
I personally never like those security questions banks come up with that presume that everyone went to "A" high school, had a stable home in which to live, and actually knew their grandparents. :)
Chinook wrote: "The prompt is suggesting that you read a fictional account of a real person. Is your book fiction? If so, yes. If it’s a non-fic than it’s not based on a real person, it’s just about a real person."The book is non- fiction. Thanks for the help.

If you used the add book/author feature, it sounds like you did it right. The teal color just indicates that it is a clickable link. I'm not sure why it's not teal for you. Can you click on it?

Not sure if this was already posted, but how to y'all post links to the books you plan on reading/have reading in the reading list? Or how do you make it in bold print? Are folks using a Word and C/P?
Dolly wrote: "Not sure if this was already posted, but how to y'all post links to the books you plan on reading/have reading in the reading list? Or how do you make it in bold print? Are folks using a Word and C/P?"If you are using the app, you really can't unless you know a bit of html.
If you are using the browser, there is an "add book/author" option above the comment box. Next to that it says, "(some html is ok)" which will give you some quick formatting tips.

Yes ! I like your mum, give her a high five from me (if she is available). I went to TAFE in my 20-30s to get my high school certificate so I could go to uni.
