It depends if it's a series and author I've loved before I'll make myself finish it even if i have yo skip here and there! But if its a new author or an author I've had bad experience with, I usually quit betwek %10-%25.

Anita Reads | 51 comments For me it depends on if the book is to be used for a challenge, I'm less likely to dnf it. It also sometimes depends on the length. Somtimes it's easier to finish even a book you don't really like if it's only about 200 pages. whereas if it was a 400+ pages books, I'll be more likely to put it down.

I rarely dnf a book though. Partly lucky picks and then partly because I often find at least some parts of a book to be interesting enough for me to continue.

I think I can count my finished 1 star rated books on 1-2 hands.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 607 comments Since Goodreads and my friends, I don't read many that I don't finish anymore.

I just finished True Deceptions True Deceptions by Veronica Forand by Veronica Forand, a fantastic new author.

You're reading three of my favorite series. Enjoy!

I'll usually give a book 50-100 pages. If it hasn't caught my interest by then, it probably won't. I don't DNF very often, but I don't feel bad when I do it.

Sue | 205 comments Rosemarie wrote: "How many pages in a book do you read before calling it quits? or do you read the whole thing hoping it will get better."

It's rare I stop reading a novel if I'm more than 30% in, but I will skim if it's really having a hard time holding my attention. Complete drops I can count them on one hand in the last 4 years. But there have been a few, one this year bored me to tears practically and I read the last few pages just to see if the ending was worth finishing it... ended on a freaking cliff hanger... dropped it like a hot potato.

message 157: by Sue (new)

Sue | 205 comments Reading Garden of Lies because I refuse to buy the audio... (no specials on it) and the library doesn't have it either. The summary looks good, less about the paranormal which I don't mind.. but her last few books haven't been quite as good so I'm happy she's going back to a 19th century mystery/romance.

Depends on the book Rosemarie, for me. If I cannot get into a book within at least 50 pages, I may put it down. Depends though.

50 pages is my cut off. If it hasn't grabbed me by then, it isn't going to and there are far too many good books out there to waste time on one I'm not enjoying.

I completely agree with this, Lauren!

message 163: by Nicci (new)

Nicci Carrera I dump it pretty quickly unless it's recommended or I paid for it. :-) It doesn't happen that often. If it's recommended and I set it down, I'll come back a second time to try again when I may be more in the mood for it.

I think I've been luckier in my choices... and it's partially because I prefer to finish a book once started... it's like my own personal challenge. Though I definitely admit to skimming.

Anita Reads | 51 comments I finished:
Twice Bitten (Chicagoland Vampires, #3) by Chloe Neill Proven Guilty (The Dresden Files, #8) by Jim Butcher Secrets of a Summer Night (Wallflowers, #1) by Lisa Kleypas Splintered (Splintered, #1) by A.G. Howard

My least favorite of the 4 books was Splintered. Not that it was bad, it just wasn't as great as I'd hoped for. The other 3 I really enjoyed.

Now I'm reading:
By a Thread (Elemental Assassin, #6) by Jennifer Estep Dragonfly by Julia Golding The Sin Eater’s Daughter (The Sin Eater’s Daughter, #1) by Melinda Salisbury

Robin (robinmy) This week I read "High Stakes" by Chloe Neill. It is a novella in Kicking It (Alex Craft, #2.5; Chicagoland Vampires, #8.25) by Faith Hunter Kicking It.

Then I read (and loved) Over the Edge (Troubleshooters, #3) by Suzanne Brockmann Over the Edge by Suzanne Brockmann. This series just gets better and better.

Anita Reads | 51 comments I finished
Dragonfly by Julia Golding By a Thread (Elemental Assassin, #6) by Jennifer Estep The Sin Eater’s Daughter (The Sin Eater’s Daughter, #1) by Melinda Salisbury

Both Dragonfly and Sin Eater's Daughter were 3 star reads for me. They were OK, but nothing stood out particularly. I think especially Dragonfly had the potential to become really great, as the writing and the characters were really good. It's just that the pace of the story was a little slow and the plot too predictable at times.
I loved By a Thread however. I think that Gin is the type of character you hate or love. I really love her as a heroine. She doesn't pretend to be more than she is. This book got a 5 star rating for me.

Now I'm reading:
Déjà Dead (Temperance Brennan, #1) by Kathy Reichs has been postponing it for a while, but now I'm ready to start tackle this series.
Desperately Seeking Shapeshifter (Midnight Liaisons, #2) by Jessica Sims I really found the first one in this book great. Hopefully this would be just as good.

message 176: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Paradise Valley (Virgin River, #7) by Robyn Carr great read as usual

I'll definitely recommend Elemental Assassin series, if you like good Urban Fantasy, which a kick ass heroine. Midnight Liaisons are more the PNR genre, but also really quick reads.

Onyx (Lux, #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Sue | 205 comments The Duke's Holiday The Duke's Holiday (The Regency Romp Trilogy, #1) by Maggie Fenton , enjoying it. Don't let the title throw you... this is not a HOLIDAY romance. Holiday in this case is the European's word for Vacation. Very quirky group of characters, definitely not your run of the mill balls and London intrigue historical.

Robin (robinmy) This week I read Show No Fear (SEAL Team 12, #7) by Marliss Melton Show No Fear by Marliss Melton. Another good addition to the Navy SEALs Team Twelve series.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I also read Tangled Up In You (Truly Idaho, #2; Writer Friends, #3) by Rachel Gibson Tangled Up In You by Rachel Gibson. This is an enjoyable contemporary romance which is part of both Gibson's Truly, Idaho series and her Writer Friends series.

I finished listening to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling. I listened to this book on my commute to work and thoroughly enjoyed it. The story is fantastic and the narration by Jim Dale is top-notch. This book made me wish I could just keep driving and driving.

I finished listening to Searching for Dragons (Enchanted Forest Chronicles, #2) by Patricia C. Wrede . I found this and #1 in the series on audio at my elibrary and downloaded and listened to them back to back. It's fun and unique. I'm going to give it a few days and then listen to #3 and #4.

Rosemarie I was getting bored picking up a lot of clunkers. Therefore, I borrowed a book from the Huxtable series. At Last Comes Love (Huxtable Quintet, #3) by Mary Balogh by Mary Balogh

In the past I have read 3 out of the 5 part series. :-)

Anita Reads | 51 comments I finished:
Insurgent (Divergent, #2) by Veronica Roth Onyx (Lux, #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

I loved Onyx, I think I'm going to really love this series. I enjoy the banter between Daemon and Katy. Really looking forward to the next book.
Insurgent was a 3 star read for me. My overall opinion is that it was a good book, but I don't like the MC.

Now I'm reading:
The Rosie Effect (Don Tillman, #2) by Graeme Simsion which I'm not sure if I really like. I wasn't so over the moon over the first one either, even though it seems I'm in the minority there. Guess I was expecting too much.
The Murder Pit (A Moose River Mystery Book 1) by Jeff Shelby It seems to be a quick read, in a gossipy town. Haven't really made my decision with this book yet.
Wonder by R.J. Palacio I started it the other day, and can't seem to put it down when I first start reading it. Such an inspirational story. I can relate to so many things in this book. I'm almost certain that this book will get 5 stars from me. Right now I can't see what will make me change that.
The Hanging Girl (Department Q, #6) by Jussi Adler-Olsen I've had this on hiatus for a while because of a team challenge where I couldn't make it fit because I'd started it too soon. Now I'm back to it, and as usual I'm enjoying the mysteries of Department Q.
