It's been a long while since I read anything paranormal and I was in an epic mood for a good, steamy romance so I decided to find a worthy combination. Desperately Seeking Shapeshifter hit the spot for sure. It's the second in a series and while I do feel that I missed a few things by not reading the first one, it worked out fine for me in terms of the romance.

Speaking of..
description

1. A gentle giant.
2. A pretend relationship scenario.
3. An adult hero who is a virgin. OMG
4. Tons of sexual tension.
5. A damaged heroine who finds her strength.

The shifter-world story was OK but the romance element was what kept me engaged. If you enjoy suspenseful and sexy shifter-based romances, then check it out!

My favorite quote:
“I’d snap every neck in this room to bring a smile to your face.” “That is the sweetest, most bloodthirsty thing anyone’s said to me.”

Note: Jessica Sims's Midnight Liaisons series includes the following installments as of July 2016.
1-Beauty Dates the Beast
2-Desperately Seeking Shapeshifter
2.1-Vixen
2.3-Speed Mating
2.6-Single Wolf Female
3-Must Love Fangs
3.5-Bear Naked
3.6-Claws & Effect
4-Wanted: Wild Thing
4.5-Tiger by the Tail
5-Alpha Ever After

When I heard from the author that this book had a virgin hero, I got excited. Then I heard he was a were-bear virgin hero. My excitement grew. Ramsey is the best type of virgin hero. He is a huge, huge man. Quiet but fierce. All other shifters fear him, even the cockiest of the wolves. And yet this fierce gentle giant has never been intimate with a woman before. Yes, let’s all just take a moment.

Sara Ward was in an abusive relationship six years ago to a man named Roy. Worse, he ends up biting her one night and turns her into a werewolf against her will. Unable to leave him, her sister finally shows up and shoots him in the head. They flee and start a new life together, opening up an online dating service for supernaturals. But Sara is a wolf without a pack and in this world, female wolves are hard to come by. When the local wolf pack finally sniffs her out, they want her to mate with one of them and join their pack. Sara does not want this at all. Now that her sister is married to a cougar shifter Beau, she has some protection, but not enough. When the wolves kidnap another woman, and demand a trade with Sara, she panics but comes up with a plan. She will go to the meeting, retrieve the kidnapped girl, but then announce she is already mated, meaning she can’t join the wolves. But now she just needs a pretend mate.

The only man for the job is Ramsey. A bear shifter who is so big and fierce, even the wolves couldn’t best him for control of Sara. He quietly agrees to this plan, as Beau is his best friend and he would do anything to help his family. Ramsey left his bear clan when he was fifteen, their strict backwards rules were too much for him to deal with. He one day hopes to return to them, but he is not ready quite yet. When he meets Sara, with her crazy blue hair and teasing personality, it wakes something up inside of him. Sara is still very jumpy when it comes to men after being abused for so long, and Ramsey is a big, scary looking guy. Even though Sara knows he is there to protect her, it takes time for her to calm down. Good thing Ramsey has a lot of patience.

This book is just so adorable. Both Ramsey and Sara are good-hearted people who are a little lost in life. Pretend mating or marriages isn’t always my favorite set-up but this one worked so well for me. Ramsey is patient enough and kind enough to want to help Sara and protect her. He is so alpha, yet so gentle with her. Sara is not only being stalked and harassed by these wolves but she also has trouble shifting, to the point that her life could be in danger. Ramsey takes time to show her how to do it correctly. Sara is grateful for his help and never lashes out or takes what he gives without appreciation. She is scared – not only from her past relationship but because of these wolves, and she lets those around her help her, but she is also strong herself.

The conflict with the wolves develops nicely as does the introduction of supporting characters. We watch Ramsey going from being alone and living in a dump, to wanting to create a home (or a den) for his mate. She gives him what he is missing in his life. I sometimes wished we had his point of view in this story, as I was dying to know what was going on in his head.

And of course Ramsey being a virgin is so sexy. He is unsure how to act in bed, and gets very excited prematurely.

“Put your hands on me, Ramsey.”
He glanced down at my naked body for the first time, and I felt a shudder pass through his big frame. “I don’t… I’m not…”
“I know,” I said softly. I took his big hand in mine, “It’s fine.”
He gazed on me as if he’d been starving. “You’re so small and fragile and I’m..”
“Big,” I breathed. “I know. You won’t hurt me. I trust you.”
He is just so growly, and kind of shy, and blushes. I really wish authors would write more heroes like this. They are some of my favorites. Highly recommend this one.

This novel is my favorite in this series. I don't understand how it went unreviewed for the last 3 years. I've reviewed most books and novellas in this series and yet my favorite one got left out for some reason.

I liked Sarah very much because of how strong she is even after the universe conspired against her for so long. It was also cute to find out at the end how Ramsey had always admired her from afar, even before they got 'stuck' together.

I adore Ramsey. He's one of my top 10 book boyfriends. Apparently I have a thing for big, buff, blondes who turn into a bear when it seems convenient. Other then that small revelation, I enjoyed how protective he was of Sarah and how understanding he was of the circumstances.

The ending was sheer luck, but it had me cringing so hard and I loved every second of it. Considering I listened to the audio book, I couldn't speed read through the end to find out what happened faster so I found myself respecting and liking Connor a little more. It got me curious as to what will happen between him and Savannah.

This sequel follows Sarah Ward, the sister of Bathsheba, the heroine from book 1. They co-own the Paranormal Online Dating Agency Midnight Liaisons where they set up supernaturals with each other. If you remember from book 1, Sarah had been abused by her boyfriend who also changed her into a werewolf without her consent. It formed a deep fear of werewolves in Sarah.

In this book, when the wolf clan offers to return a kidnapped were-cougar named Savannah in exchange for Sarah, Sarah freaked out. The wolf clan has run out of females who still go into heat and they need females to procreate. So they want Sarah, since she has been turned, to mate one of other wolves. Sarah is petrified of wolves so she hatches up a plan to pretend to be already mated to a Ramsey, a were-bear and Beau's brother (Beau is engaged to sister Bathesda).

Sarah and Ramsey faux romance was their attempt to fool the werewolves into leaving Sarah alone. As they spend more time together and learning about each other, they start to really care about each other. But the werewolves aren't going to give Sarah up without a fight.

I enjoyed Sarah's story. She truly had PTSD from that past relationship. I love how much the sisters cared about each other. Ramsey was a bowl of surprises as he had more depth to his character than people thought. Ramsey scared everyone but he felt very deeply and was considerate and thoughtful.

This book was just as good as book 1. This sequel wasn't as funny but the plot and writing was just as good. I wanted likeable characters and this one had it in spades. This was a great fake romance stories. If you want a story with almost every supernatural you can think of, this one is for you.

Ok, but it was put-down-able. I never had the eager-to-get-back-to-it feel.

Many times during the book Sara “assumes” Ramsey doesn’t like something about her, or thinks she smells bad, or thinks he doesn’t want her, or thinks he’s just being polite. I got tired of that. The author was using that for conflict. None of it was true. Similarly through most of the book, Sara assumes Ramsey wants to be with his arranged marriage Nikolina. That was not true, but Ramsey never told her. Those were the major conflicts between the couple. They didn’t do anything for me. I’d prefer personality conflicts or something else, not these inaccurate assumptions.

The sex scenes were nice but not the best. For a long time, Sara assumed Ramsey did not desire her. But Ramsey was just being patient and wanted what was best for Sara. Even later after they knew they loved each other, Sara was the initiator more than Ramsey. He was always careful and cautious. I suppose that was ok, but sex might have been hotter if Ramsey showed some unrestrainable desire.

Ramsey’s role was to scare off some wolves who were after Sara. I was hoping to see some bad-ass fight scenes with Ramsey beating up the wolves. But there weren’t any. He had some sort of security job, but we were not told about it, so it was hard to admire him. I liked the guy because of the way he treated Sara, but I wanted to like something else about him.

DATA:
Narrative mode: 1st person Sara. Story length: 353 pages. Swearing language: strong including religious swear words but rarely used. Sexual language: moderate to strong. Number of sex scenes: 9. Setting: current day U.S. Copyright: 2012. Genre: paranormal romance.

'Desperately Seeking Shapeshifter' by Jessica Sims is book two in the "Midnight Liaisons" series.
It is the story of Sara and Ramsey.
3.5 Stars

I have read the previous book 'Beauty Dates the Beast' and yes that book did start setting the stage for this one...but I felt this book was a standalone book. It took you right to where you needed to be by giving you the last few scene of the previous book.

Sara is a wolf shiftier not by choice. Sara was in a abusive relationship and it turns out he was a wolf shiftier. In on of his brutal beatings he bit her and then had to finish the transformation. Sara sister came and saved her from him and they both have went on the run. Now Sara tries to hide her abilities from everyone else and is very scared of other wolves like her. So her sister tries to keep her safe but Sara realizes that now that another wolf pack has found her that she will have to do something herself to fix this. So Sara comes up with a plan to have a fake mate....Ramsey has volunteered for the position. Ramsey is a quite, bear shiftier who Sara is afraid of because of his size but she does trust him. Now they have to try to convince the wolf pack that they are mated and she isn't available to them.

I am such a sucker for pretend relationships turning into the real thing. You guys have no idea. It’s definitely one of my tropes when I’m reading fanfiction and I tend to like it just as much in romance novels, which is why I was so happy about the premise of this book.

This is the second book in the Midnight Liasons series from Jessica Sims (aka Jill Myles) and it follows Sarah, who was one of the main characters from the first book. I liked Sarah in Beauty Dates the Beast and I liked her even more after reading her POV in this book. I would be terrified of all wolves too if my entrance into their world consisted of a dickhead, abusive boyfriend. I’m honestly surprised he hasn’t been killed yet by someone in the Alliance clan, but maybe it’ll happen in the next book.

Ramsey was one of those strong, tall, silently menacing types. I don’t know why, but those guys tend to be extremely cuddly and lovable once you stop being scared of them. (Hah)

The sexy times were rather hot, even the scenes that were leading up to the big climax. Jill Myles does know how to write chemistry well.

Overall, it was a good book. I can see this series becoming one of those behemoth ones, winding around to all the wolves, cougars and other members of the Alliance clan until ten years later you realize you’ve read 20 variations of the same plot in this one series. (In my defense, it’s happened before, but I can see this series at least taking a humor-infused break from all the angst and drama every once in a while.)

The next book comes out in August and centers on Marie, who works at the dating service with Bathsheba and Sarah, and a cougar we were introduced to in the first book. It should be interesting to watch them interact.

I want a were-bear!

Well, I want one if he's anything like Ramsey, anyway. He's the strong, silent, stoic but gentle type of man-tree that just....sigh. Yeah, he was lovely. Built like a forest oak, with rare but devastating smiles, he totally won my heart in this second instalment of the midnight Liaisons series, this time featuring Bathsheba's werewolf sister, Sarah.

If you read book one, you'll recall the claim that was made to the werewolves at the end of that book. This book begins just a few days before that, with the conversation that led to that decision. What comes of that claim is Sarah having to prove to the werewolf clan that she's mated to were-bear Ramsey, because that's the only thing that could possibly save her from having to go and live with them—even the claim of your own clan isn't strong enough to separate a mated couple. The wolves, for their part, desperately need another female wolf for breeding, and since they're so rare, they're determined to do everything possible to snare Sarah. Except the thing is, Sarah isn't really mated to Ramsey. They barely know one another. It's all a big lie. And unfortunately, although brain cells aren't exactly abundant among the werewolves, even they don't believe her since she looks positively terrified of him. Of course, they don't realise that after Sarah's hellish past, she's terrified of most men. And Ramsey being so huge doesn't exactly help with her nerves, either. Still, she puts on her bravest face and tries to convince them of her love for her "Huggy Bear" in the hopes that they'll go away and leave her be. Sadly not. They remain unconvinced and insist one of their wolves remain behind to observe them. By living in Ramsey's house.

So, here we have two people—one nervous and jittery after being abused by her former boyfriend, the wolf who turned her, and one naturally quiet and shy who generally prefers to keep himself to himself—who would probably never have naturally come together of their own accord, but who are forced to act the part to maintain a deception. But what happens when you start to realize that you may not actually be acting anymore? Is the other person still just acting? Are you still playing the same game with the same rules? Or have things changed?

These confusing questions and feelings led to a wonderful and engaging paranormal romance. One I thoroughly enjoyed. Sarah and Ramsey's interactions were both swoon-worthy and, eventually, scorching hot. The relationship developed at the perfect pace and it just made my heart happy, as all good romances should.

The Big Bad in this case was the werewolf pack and their insistent claim on Sarah, which all comes to a head in the exciting final pages. There were also a couple of interesting developments with other potential couples in the series, and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more about them in future books.

A wonderful PNR, and again, a great audio production!

I got into a werewolf-y mood this week, and was desperately searching for a shapeshifter book.

So, in desperation, I splurged on this cute-looking novel by Jessica Sims--Desperately Seeking Shapeshifter.

I discovered that Jessica Sims is also Jill Myles, who wrote my favorite time warp-caveman-dinosaur romance, Island Heat.

Needless to say, this book was the perfect answer to my shapeshifter desperation. It was adorable! First of all, the characters were very appealing. The hero Ramsey is a delicious giant were-bear, the heroine Sarah is a were-wolf struggling with past abuse issues, there are plenty of secondary characters to add flavor to the story, and even some evil villains. Unlike other shifter series, I found the politics in this one just right...not overwhelming or confusing at all. The story flowed nicely, the pacing was spot-on, the sexy times were smoky, and I loved the unexpected ending with Sarah's rise above her fear and incompetence as a shifter. Didn't see that coming...it was a great surprise!

Sims's writing is excellent. This book is a big step up from many of the shifter books I've read in the last couple of years. There is humor, but it's not over-the-top or off-putting. There are shifter politics, but they don't bog down the story. The romance is super satisfying, with an emotional connection to complement the sexual attraction. I cannot wait to read the rest of the series!

For anyone looking for a super satisfying, well-written, adorable, and sexy shifter story, your desperation is over.

Desperately Seeking Shapeshifter is a grade-A winner.

Grade: A (I know, I already said that.)

The story of a Sarah, a scared, small reluctant werewolf and Ramsey, a big, gentle were-bear of a man.

Sarah is stalked by the nearest wolf clan, who want her to join them as they are short on females and do not particularly care about what she wants. Her experiences with werewolves have not been great and she's mightily afraid of them, and in an effort to stay out of their clutches, she and her allies concoct a plan where she pretends to be Ramsey's mate.

Ramsey being the scary alliance's enforcer that not many people would like to oppose, seems like the best choice for Sarah's protection.

Their scheme backfires when they are forced to spend more time together in closer proximity than they had imagined and they no longer know if they are pretending or not.

I couldn't particularly relate to Sarah, who up until the very end is too frightened to stand up for herself, but I liked sweet and silent Ramsey, who, despite his inexperience, is a perfect mate to her.

Next in the series comes a short story about a were-fox in Vixen.

Just a few things:

1)this is a PNR, written in first person, heroine's perspective throughout.

2) I didn't read the first book but didn't have any trouble following along. However if you want to read book 1 in the ML series, then you may want to read it first, as this (IIRC) spoils the first book.

3) The Hero was awesome...so much so that i resent not getting his pov....this is one of those books that would have been so so so much better written with the third person narrative...the way its written, i feel like we only got bits and pieces of what could have been a really good story.

4) the build up was pretty well done, esp how Ms Sims wrote the emotional turmoil the h had to deal with...However the ending was sort of a cop out...it felt a bit rushed and compact..like too much happened too quickly, and ended up not feeling believable....and now I feel sorta gypped.

5)That first line in the synopsis, the one calling this a funny series? Yeah, not so much. Yes it was light hearted, and a very easy to read book, but funny it wasn't.

So as okay as this was, I probably won't read another JS title...It wasn't bad, but it also never crossed into the territory of good.

between 2.5 and 3 stars.

The local wolf pack is after werewolf Sara Ward, to join their pack and to mate with one of the wolves. To save herself she comes up with a plan to mated already. Were-Bear Ramsey Bjorn agrees to pretend to be her mate. But neither of them expected to actually fall in love.

Excellent follow up to Beauty Dates the Beast. I loved Sara and Ramsey's story. The back story of Sara's past is heart wrenching, and Ramsey Bjorn is exactly what she needs. Even though she doesn't realize it at first. Ramsey is one big bad sexy were-bear that will have readers drooling. Desperately Seeking Shapeshifter is a fun, sexy story that I had a hard time putting down. It's books like this that made me fall in love with the paranormal romance genre. A must read!

Okay while I did enjoy this story it is mostly about the heroine. The Hero was not an alpha, just a nice big ol' guy. He was also a 27 year old virgin.... Really? He wasn't an actual "hero" a nice guy but meh.... It was a good story though about the heroine! I really enjoyed watching Sara come into her own power and overcome her fears! I also really enjoyed the world the author has created, I will definitely continue with this series. I was just disappointed in the lack of romance and the lack of alpha maleness.

PJV Quickie: I have been singing the praises of this book to anyone who will listen: A strong, silent hero and a heroine turned werewolf against her will with a crazed pack out to steal her – what’s not to love?

Review
Confession: I have been in a book funk for a couple of weeks, and I picked up Desperately Seeking Shapeshifter as a change from all the angsty YA romance I’ve been reading. Desperately Seeking Shapeshifter is proof that sometimes the “book gods” smile upon you…this was one of the best shapeshifter romances I’ve read in quite some time! I had not read the first book in the series (Beauty Dates the Beast) before I read Desperately Seeking Shapeshifter, but I bought it as soon as I finished.

On to the review then…

Sara is a werewolf who was bitten, not born. She was bitten by her abusive ex-boyfriend who didn’t teach her anything about being a werewolf. Due to a set of circumstances that happen in book 1, the ex is no longer around to teach her anything even if she wanted him to. Now she lives with her human sister and her sister’s boyfriend, Beau, who is the alpha of a were-cougar clan. Female werewolves are rare, and there is a werewolf pack nearby who wants Sara, against her will, as a mate. To force Beau to give up Sara the wolves have kidnapped Beau’s sister and are holding her to trade for Sara.

Sara decides they will agree to the trade, then as soon as they get Beau’s sister, they will claim Sara has a mate and therefore is unable to join the wolf pack. She needs a fake mate, so Beau suggests his best friend, a big, scary bear-shifter named Ramsey. Ramsey is a were-bear that was exiled from his clan when he was 15, and has been with Beau’s Alliance ever since. He is gruff, a loner, and other shifters fear him due to his size and strength. He agrees to protect Sara and takes that promise very seriously…
_________________

Desperately Seeking Shapeshifter was absolutely adorable! I fell in love with Ramsey at first sight – big and strong, loyal, protective, and very inexperienced in the ways of women. As a heroine, Sara is a very sympathetic character – she’s been living with an abuser for years, and she bears the physical and mental scars from that. Ramsey is patient with her, helping her with her shifting (she was never taught the proper way) and keeping her out of the hands of a potentially abusive werewolf pack. I love when he starts to fix up his den for her and she starts to realize that he’s letting her steer the relationship; together, they make a great couple.

This story was so much fun! There are also some very entertaining side stories happening – Sara and her sister, Bath, run a shapeshifter dating agency, which is kind of neat. Bath is planning her wedding to Beau, and then there’s also Connor, one of the pack wolves, who has feelings for Beau’s sister, whom he got involved with while she was kidnapped. There is a whole cast of interesting secondary characters who have potential stories that I would love to read.

Ms. Sims works the romance and plot together well and paces it so that I’m never bored. There were several spots where I wondered about the worldbuilding, especially in the beginning, but we learned about it along with our heroine, so it was not a problem that I didn’t read the first book before reading Desperately Seeking Shapeshifter.

I absolutely cannot wait until August for the next book, Must Love Fangs.

Recommendations
Fans of shapeshifter romance will absolutely love Desperately Seeking Shapeshifter; great characters, interesting worldbuilding, and a nice romance to keep you turning the pages.

This was such a quick and enjoyable read! I actually enjoyed it more than the first book and I can’t really pinpoint the why. Maybe it’s because I like to see a heroine that has gone through abuse take charge of her life and not let things “happen” to her again. Maybe it’s the fact that I LOVE a big brooding hero, tough on the exterior, who is also a sweet teddy bear on the inside and … a virgin!

We met Sarah in book one when her human sister, Bathsheba, was dedicating her whole life to protecting Sarah and covering up the fact that she was now a turned werewolf. What we didn’t really know was that she was abused by her boyfriend who then sort of accidentally turned her into a werewolf until Bathsheba got rid of him.

Now that she was outed as a werewolf, the local pack wants her to join so they can all mate with her. Sort of barbaric. But werewolves are not the civilized bunch in this story. Sarah has the brilliant idea to fake a mating to another shifter so they’ll leave her alone, and she ends up with the toughest and scariest of Beau’s enforcers, Ramsey. Ramsey is a bear shifter who really doesn’t say much other than grunting and bashing skulls.

Sarah and Ramsey were so cute together. Ramsey, for as big and strong as he is, handled Sarah and her hang ups about being touched after her abuse very well. He was sweet and slow with her. Sometimes even too much.

As they pretend to be in love, they fall in love. But they also have to deal with the nasty werewolves who are trying to trick Sarah into making a mistake so they can use her in their pack. Although there are some that are still redeemable and I can’t wait to read about Connor.

If you are looking for an entertaining, sweet and sexy paranormal romance, you should check Jessica Sims out! These are fast reads that will lighten up your mood and leave you with a smile on your face!

First Impression:

I want a bear shifter of my own!

What I liked:

Everything!

What’s not to like about a sexy, strong and silent were-bear? Ramsey is the everything that Sara needs. Protector, friend and sexy mate all rolled up into one.

Sara has been in hiding from other sups. She was turned against her will into a werewolf by her abusive boyfriend. But at the end of book 1, Beauty Dates the Beast, Sara’s secret about being a werewolf is out of the bag and the local wolf pack is in need of a female. And the fact that Sara hasn’t managed the art of shifting everyone is wondered that she will not last much longer if she doesn’t figure it out.

Sara is inexperienced at shifting and Ramsey is inexperienced with women. They help each other out with their stamina problems. But after all practice makes prefect and Ramsey is a sex god in the making.

What I didn’t like:

Nothing!

The Narration:

Leah Mallach did a good job with the female characters but like many female narrators she didn’t do some of the male characters justice. But with the book being a light and fun read I think she hit the snark level just right. I think after listening to two books in the series I’m use to her narration. I don’t know I would seek out books just because she was the narrator but I happy to continue the Midnight Liaisons series on audio.

Lasting Impression:

A fun and sexy series to turn to when I’m in the mood for a light and fun listen.

Will I continue this series:

Yes! Book 3, Must Love Fangs is on my audio wish list.

He sufrido mucho por Sarah, muchísimo!

Glad I stuck with this series. This was much better put together than the first one. I loved how forthright both of the main characters were (each in their own way). I also love a Heroine who demands answers and kicks asses. The werewolf clan was super creepy and sometimes veered towards giving me the heebie jeebies. The author portrayed them as generally complete creeps but then would through in a few "good" ones as to say #notallwerewolves. It seemed forced to me to take all the possessive, abusive, toxic, machismo traits possible and give them to one species. And to make them hillbillies to boot. As if only "unsophisticated" men can be monsters.

My heart ached so much for all that Sara went through and what she continued to go through in this book. The Anderson wolf pack (minus Connor) were horrible people and I was so happy with how this ended! Sara and Ramsey were such a cute/odd couple. He gave me some iffy moments because he was just so quiet that it seemed like he was remote but that definitely wasn't the case and I loved how Sara was able to bring him out of his shell...at least a little bit!

DNF at 5%. I really dislike whimpering female main characters and ones that say “this is all my fault”. Ugh. There is evil in the world. And it’s not your fault.

Maybe this gets better but it’s exhausting to me so I won’t be continuing.

Ok. Didn't live up to my (limited) expectations. Lots of potential, some enjoyable bits.

Bought as part of audible escape package.
