Thrre are variants. The one in this topics goal is to get a character whose first or last name starts with every letter of the alphabet. Only one character can be used per book. For instance, if you read A Study in Scarlet. You could use Sherlock Holmes for either S or H or you could use John Watson for J or W. I am sure someone else can explain it better, look at earlier postings above at the lists some of us have posted.
