WHAT IS EVERYBODY READING NOW?

It is the fascinating story of the infamous Triangle Shirt Factory fire of 1911 that killed 146 people, most of them women. Fire broke out on the upper three stories of the building where the fire fighters' ladders would not reach and many of the workers jumped to their deaths. The book relates how the alliance between idealistic labor reformers and the politicians of Tammany Hall brought about the rise of urban liberalism and transformed politics. I have almost completed it and would recommend it highly. Very well researched and written.

Glad to hear your review. This has been on my reading list for some time. Can see I will want to get to it sooner rather than later. Thanks!

I finished it and was enthralled and horrified......it is a must read. You might want to get to it sooner.....but it may also give you nightmares.

Just finished this history of how Muslims, Jews and Christians collaborated to create an amazing culture of tolerance, cultural development and academic collaboration on the Iberian peninsula from the mid 700's until the expulsion of both Muslims and Jews in 1492. Not an easy read but fascinating.

Thanks Rick, I'm new to the site and still trying to figure out how to get comments posted to the place I want them.

Hi Tom would be really interested in your thoughts on this book as it is high on my TBR as well.

I mentioned this book on the "Recently Acquired" thread and have now started reading it. It is an in-depth look at the Crimean War from the British viewpoint and does not spare the details. It does, however, avoid being pedantic and provides some interesting insight into the minds of the military leadership which was, in the main, rather inept. I am about half-way through the 500+ pages and have found it to be extremely well written.

Glad to hear you are enjoying the book Jill!

Another good selection :)

will do. almost 1/2 way in, and its been great so far!! I like the writing. Aside from all the unit abbreviations the reading is not difficult, not as dense as I feared picking it up.

Next I will be reading

this book is set in the time of Tiber, in 1st century A.D. - the main hero is Marcus Corvinus (he's favourite thing is checking out the wineshops in the Rome;) and her wife, tracking the mysterious murder of Pegasus, the racing mega-star.
I am just at the beginning, but I am really enjoying to read about the factions and fans and All-Day-Life in the ancient Rome.

It describes all those skirmishes and small wars fought in the corners of Empire that are mostly forgotten today. Byron Farwell is one of the great historians of the British military experience.....his books are so readable.

Cicero: The Life and Times of Rome's Greatest Politician

Gaddis has written a highly entertaining, very brief survey of the major events of The Cold War. Despite its shortcomings in going into any major detail about any single major events, the book succeeds in what Gaddis intends to accomplish: write a brief overview of The Cold War. He does delve into an analysis of certain events and introduces the reader to the major questions that many other historians have asked in much more detail.
This book will work exactly as it is intended and I plan to use it extensively with my students throughout their high school history classes

Sounds gossipy but since it is by Christopher Hibbert it will be of quality.

Hi Robert, it was a pretty good story of a small US Special Forces team and their Afghan Army mates locked in a fairly large fire-fight during a Coalition offensive in 2006. It was a fast paced read, enjoyable and interesting.
