Hi, my name is Robin and I live in Wisconsin. I have been on Goodreads since about 2012 and have participated in challenges from Pop Sugar, ReadHarder and other groups. One was reading a book published in each year of my life (challenging as I was already over 60 years old!) But instead of being happy to try new things, I felt I was reading books I didn't really care for and not making a dent in my large TBR pile. So a couple years ago, I quit all the challenges and cut back on my general one for Goodreads.

However, in this group, it seems like the challenges are flexible and fun enough that I can make almost anything work. I have been reading about 100 books a year, so I will have flexibility with which ones I choose for the prompts.

I enjoy classics, historical fiction, mysteries, sci-fi, fantasy, romance, - almost anything except horror, zombies or serial killers. And I can NOT read any more books about Nazis. I do read some nonfiction, generally in the fields of history, psychology, education, or women's studies.

I am really impressed with the international nature of this group and a big range of ages and backgrounds. I am delighted to see others read in French, as do I. I am a moderator in a GR classics group called The Readers Review which reads books from 1750-1920. I also belong to an in-person mystery book club at my local library.

I have been retired a little over a year. I enjoy needlework, Scrabble and other word games. I love audiobooks, because now I can "read" while driving, washing dishes, or as today, shoveling snow.

Welcome Robin! Yes, we come in all shapes and sizes and languages in this group, and we are pretty flexible. I'm trying to read more classics (always... it's a struggle) so your expertise will be appreciated in this group!

Welcome to the group Robin! We have similar reading tastes, except I am a sucker for zombie books lol :)

Kendra | 2084 comments Hello. My name is Kendra, and I'm from Canada. I know it's late in the year to join the group, but looking over the books I've read this year, I've already checked off 45 of the challenges. But there is no way I could do them in order - I am such a mood reader I can't really plan - there are books I've been planning to read for a couple of years now and I still haven't gotten around to them. But I might move things around and try not to use any of my rereads.

Hi Kendra! I joined toward the end of January myself, and I never considered reading in order. I like the freedom of this group to interpret and use prompts in a way that works for you. Some people do the prompts in order but what you have done is also perfect, slotting your books read into whatever prompt fits.

Matthew Hello, so I am late to the program, joining this challenge in May. But perhaps I could count books I've already read in 2020 toward some or the prompts? I live in Tempe, Arizona, and have done a few different types of reading challenges in the past and always really enjoyed it. This should be fun!

You can absolutely count any books you have already read this year. Feel free to post your challenge list here and join in on some of group conversations to get to know everyone! Welcome to ATY!

Dori (daisydori) | 169 comments Hi All,
My name is Dori, I'm from Hungary but I live in the UK. I mostly read in English now but I also make an effort to read in my mother tongue ever so often.

I've only found this group and the challenger very recently, I'm still working on my plan which keeps changing. I absolutely love the challenge, it encourages me to think out of the box, to read more books and to explore new topics/genres/authors. Not to mention that it is a much needed distraction during lockdown :-)

Anthony | 235 comments Hello, I’m Anthony from Ohio. Married and father of 2 boys. I just came across this group and was really intrigued. I’m a member of a different book club here on Goodreads that I joined a couple years ago. It is a small group but I found it really resparked my reading habit expanding my repertoire into things I would never have picked up without the prompting. I read a lot of audiobooks as I have a long drive to and from work but I always have a handheld book going at the same time. I like what I’m seeing here and the variety of topics and challenges. I found that the A-Z challenge of book titles I did last year was the thing that really got me motivated to try different things. It looks like you have many similar challenges and would like to participate. Since it’s mid year, I’ll probably just look and join discussions about books I have read and really get into your challenges next year. Looking forward to participating and talking books with everyone.

It's not too late to join this year's challenge by assigning books you have already read to the various prompts. Also the Summer Challenge is just beginning.

Sarah-Jane Frances | 1 comments Hi everyone, I'm Sarah-Jane - a teacher in a tiny rural school in South Australia. I just found out about this gorgeous challenge and am busily looking at the books I read each month to fill in some prompts. I'd like to try and fill them in mostly in order so am checking my read dates to match them up as I would have if I began in January. Love a good challenge 😍😘

Carol Palmer | 16 comments Hello everybody! I belong to a few other groups on Goodreads, and noticed some members of those groups posting about ATY, so I came over and had a look. I'm always looking for prompts that will get me to increase the variety of what I read. ATY seems to have those kinds of prompts. Also, I like the way you choose the prompts for the next year. So, I'll give this a try in 2021!

Deren | 21 comments I just noticed I never introduced myself even though this is my second year trying out the challenge. Hi! I'm a fan of challenging myself in general and pushing myself to try out new things, and ATY is the perfect opportunity for that. I'll admit I've fallen quite behind this year but since I'm getting back into reading after taking a break for my mental health, I want to read as much as I can and catch up! I hope I can be a lot more active in this community in the future.

Harry Patrick I've been doing the PopSugar Challenge for a couple of years but this is my first year for the ATY. I'm not a fast reader so we'll see how far I get. These prompts look very interesting.

message 787: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) Hello. I'm Calvin and I stumbled across this group via Listopia. I currently have a ridiculous volume of tsonduku, with 194 e-books and close 75 physical books. I have for a while now been reading through my e-books in purchase date order, purely to cut down on the amount of time I spend going "what shall I read next?"

I usually read e-books when commuting/out in the world and physical books when at home, but 2020 being the year of the pandemic somewhat altered that. I have, for a while, been looking for something to help me break away from the constant chronological purchase order of my book reading habit, and when I saw this group and the 2021 topics, I thought "I wonder if I can find something for each of the topics from my TBR that I already own?"

And, with only 2 exceptions, I could! So I decided to join and give it a whirl. With the pandemic reaching into 2021, I won't be back at work full time until the second quarter of next year at the earliest so I will likely pack a lot of reading into the first 3 months :-)

Hi Jess! I would definitely recommend making a plan in our 2021 planning folder, and grabbing a spot on the community spreadsheet when we open up the 2021 tabs. Both are great ways to track what you've read for the challenge and see what other people are reading for inspiration.

message 791: by NancyJ (last edited Dec 05, 2020 07:03PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3532 comments Hi I'm Nancyj. I noticed some of my friends from another group are here, and I love what you're doing! 2020 has been a record breaking reading year for me (250+ right now) so I'm trying to retroactively complete the 2020 challenge now. I figure this is good practice for 2021 even if it doesn't count. I might have enough for two or more go-rounds.

I like many of the rejected prompts too! I saw something about a Reject Challenge. Can someone advise me where this is or how to do it?

Also, I saw the BIO options and I'm wondering how to record those when I'm done.

Thanks!

message 792: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
Hi Nancyj! Welcome!

For the rejects challenge, you can choose the prompts that stand out to you or the ones you think would add to your overall challenge well (or you can just read books you want to read then slot them in the rejects prompts after). It's totally up to you! Most people include their rejects challenge either with their 2021 Plan thread for the main challenge (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...) or they create a new thread for just the rejects challenge in our Outside Challenges folder (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...).

For the BIO and KIS list, it's just a different way of looking at the main ATY challenge prompts. You could record that you did a BIO challenge on your Plan thread (for example, next year for the love story prompt, I'm putting a BIO of it being an LGBTQIA+ love story, so I included that stipulation on my 2021 Plan thread).

Deborah | 348 comments I saw this group on a friend's Goodreads page and was intrigued by the idea. I have been trying to expand on the books I read and I thought this challenge could help with that. I am not sure I can pull off reading a book a week, but I thought that the 2021 Challenge would be worth at least a try.

Sue Edgerton | 1 comments Hi! My name is Sue Edgerton and I live in Southgate, Michigan USA which is 12 miles south of Detroit. This is my first GOODREADS challenge and I look forward to participating!

My favorite book genres are Mystery-Thriller-Suspense, but I am willing to read anything.

I am a slow reader, so I'll be pleased if I can complete one book per month. I work a 12-hr, rotating swing shift, so time to read is somewhat sporadic, but I will try my best!

Machell | 7 comments I live in Central New York but am working from home. I haven't read as much this past year - just couldn't seem to concentrate. I'm hoping that by doing this challenge and a couple of others, I will get back on track.

I participated last year, but didn't fill in my reads until very late in the year...This time, I vow to do better and keep up with entering my reads.

Jim Townsend | 19 comments Good morning!

My name is Jim Townsend and I'm a 57-year-old married man from New Jersey near Philadelphia, PA. I'm not sure how I discovered this group; I joined it the other day after tapping around messages in other groups I'm in, and am intrigued by some of the challenges. I wonder if I am too late to participate in the main ATY 52 books challenge.

I read an average of about 40-50 books a year in nearly all genres, but my favorite genres are nonfiction, classics, mystery/thriller, and science fiction/fantasy.

Looking forward to meeting all of you and participating in the group.
