I'm not sure everyone did or not, but I figured that they still had the rest of the month to finish out.

LaurLa | 3905 comments Dec 5th works for me!

*Dawn (x1f4dadawnx1f4da) | 208 comments LaurLa wrote: "Dec 5th works for me!"

I'm good with the 5th as well. Looking forward to it but need to speed read for some November challenges! ;)

⚜️XAR the Bookwyrm (xar-the-bookwyrm) Started it a little after 5pm EST, and just now finished it at 10:07pm EST. This one seemed shorter than the first one, but was fairly easy to get through.

It was pretty good. Builds on the first book without being so confusing that you have to have read that one to understand this one. The killer threw me for a loop, especially with the red herring that Ms. Roberts threw in. Looking forward to the next one!

PepperP0t I actually started it a couple of days ago and keep putting it down. I'm a little more than halfway done. I think I know who did it and I've thought that for a while, I think that's why I keep putting it down.

I think it's shorter too and the mystery piece itself is actually more layered and involved. I also like the Eve Roarke thing.

PepperP0t I was much farther than I thought and I'm done. I was right about the killer (yay, me!)

I do like this series quite a bit

LaurLa | 3905 comments I got so sidetracked and almost forgot about this. I started but am only a couple of chapters in. The mystery is intriguing so far. I like seeing the development of Eve and Roarke's relationship in the first couple of chapters too. I'd forgotten that there was a bit of a jump in their relationship between books one and two. Even though there is still plenty of that to come, I find I'm wishing I could have seen those few months.

PepperP0t I didn't really miss them - the months. For minute maybe but then it seemed they were settled. How much do you want to strangle the butler? . I really like this mystery how about you.?

⚜️XAR the Bookwyrm (xar-the-bookwyrm) I've been reading this series at the same time I've been reading Marie Force's Fatal series. I know we like to read these at the beginning of the month, and my Group Read for Fatal Deception is set for January 4th. Anyone object to starting this one on January 3rd? I really want to read the books back to back and see how similar they are!

LaurLa | 3905 comments PepperP0t wrote: "I didn't really miss them - the months. For minute maybe but then it seemed they were settled. How much do you want to strangle the butler? . I really like this mystery how about you.?"

I had to keep putting this down for other challenges... why do we do this to ourselves??? But I claimed this one for 2 team challenges this coming week so I'll finally get it done!!

Anyway, I like this one. I'm just past the part where Eve and Roarke made up after their fight/breakup(?). I fell asleep reading last night so I'm anxious to get back to it.

I am angry at how Somerset treats Eve and that Roarke doesn't really put a stop to it, at least he hasn't yet. But since I've read deeper into the series, (view spoiler)

I'm up for it whenever. I added the series to a couple of year-long challenges I am doing, so I won't have to 'squeeze' them in among other challenges each month.

Do you think we could shoot for 2 a month? Or just take it as it comes, more or less depending on how things go?

Do you see the similarities in these 2 series? Or maybe just between Eve and Sam? I love both but as I was reading the Fatal series I couldn't help but think Eve was a template in some ways for Sam.

I've got the 1-5 bundle out from my library's e-lending service right now, so I'm fine with doing 2 a month right now. However, I would suggest we break it up a bit, do one in the beginning of the month, and do one closer to the 15th - 20th of the month. Gives us a chance to not overload so much on the series if we can cleanse our mental palates in between reads.

totally agree with beginning of the month, then later! Definitely need a break from Eve's intensity ;-)

I do see a lot of similarities in the series! I do think Eve was a template for Sam, and Fatal Consequences felt a lot like Naked in Death for me, just with different commentary. I knew it felt familiar, but I didn't connect it until you asked me about it!

Nick can't compare to Roarke, though, even though it is quite obvious that Roarke was a template for him. Nick really just can't let Sam be in charge, wants to protect her and keep her sheltered. Roarke is more of a partner to Eve and can appreciate her strength without domineering her. I like that more than Nick's style.

PepperP0t I just finished Immortal in Death (In Death, #3) by J.D. Robb and I forgot to check in. sorry. I liked the outing quite a bit.

(view spoiler)

PepperP0t I have Marie Force's series but I haven't read any of them. I'm such a moody reader I don't like to identify my book first in case that's not what I'm in the mood for.

Don't you find similar characters/storylines when one gets popular? That's just a theme it seems and if they both gain popularity one veers off and finds it's own identity. (i.e. Black Dagger Brotherhood & Midnight Breeds)

I'm reading this long series and Virgin River along with other things. Since I won't let myself start a series until I finish one anymore I'm cleaning up bu I had started so many before I decided that (4 years ago) I still have a lot of hanger's on.

I haven't read BDB/ Midnight Breeds, so I can't speak to that, but I have noticed it some with paranormal books trying to copy Laurell K. Hamilton and Sherrilyn Kenyon. It's part of the reason why I stepped back from the genre, it all started to seem the same.

I have quite a few hanging on as well, Pepper. I'll have tied up 37 series by year's end, so I think that's a pretty healthy dent in the TBR! That's not even counting the abandoned series!

PepperP0t I have way too many one book til finish series! But I'm working on it. That year of no reading hurt. It made me wish I enjoyed audio.

I can't do Laurell K. Hamilton - the first book I tried of hers had zombies, rats and snakes - no can do! I'll never know what's similar to her but some do emulate Kenyon. But it's not just PNR, it's every genre that the similarities are found - it's all about dollar bills!

I can't do audio either, so don't feel bad! And you're right, it is about the money more than anything else!

LaurLa | 3905 comments I agree there are a lot of similarities within genres and probably more often than not to take advantage of a trend. But I've enjoyed enough of all of Marie Force's work that I like to think she was inspired a bit by Ms Roberts and wasn't just trying to cash in. But who knows, really...

And who's to blame them? How often do we read a book/series and enjoyed it enough that we ask for recs of something similar/in the same vein? If an author is talented enough to write a book within set parameters but still make it unique and their own, I won't complain that they are trying to use the trend to their advantage. That's not to say they all can pull it off, though....

When I recognized the similarities between Eve and Sam, I liked it. I sort of felt more connected to Sam because she felt familiar. At the same time, the series were different enough that I didn't feel like she was copying the In Death series.

⚜️XAR the Bookwyrm (xar-the-bookwyrm) I have to agree that I enjoy both Eve and Sam in their own respects, maybe even like Sam just that smidge more because it is more contemporary than Eve's world.

Very well said, Laurla. I agree on all points. Some writers are more successful at this than others and no matter how they start they are fulfilling their dreams of being an author.

Also, since there is no accounting for taste or predicting who will like what there is nothing that says the 'imitation' won't be just as successful or even more successful than the original. First doesn't necessarily make best for everyone.

It's no different than singers starting out by covering popular songs made famous by others. I know I've not only liked both versions, I also liked the original or the remake better.

PepperP0t I think all three of us are saying the same thing and bring up different aspects (expect we don't all read the same media for books)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Sorry everyone for not joining in. My dad passed away on November 19 and i havent really been in the mood for reading. Hope you are all enjoying the books.

PepperP0t My condolences Lauren. That is hard. I hope you and your family are coping well with the adjustment.

Lauren (laurenjberman) Thanks Pepperpot. Taking it one day at a time

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about your dad, Lauren. My sincere condolences. I hope you are able to find comfort in the good memories you have of him. I know that helped me when my dad passed away. Other people sharing stories about him helped keep him with me.

Lauren (laurenjberman) Thanks Dawn. Yes, it was wonderful hearing from his cousins how sweet he was as a child. The stories definitely help

It makes us get to know them in a new way as well because we get the chance to see them from the perspective of how others saw them, instead of just as "Dad". I heard a lot from little old ladies all the nice things (repair work) "little Johnny" did for them without charging them anything. It makes me wonder what my kids will hear about me after I'm gone. I better straighten up, I guess. I've got my legacy-reputation to protect! I can see it now: "Oh, yeah, I remember your mom always carrying around books in her purse. But she was reluctant to tell us what she was reading, and she would hide the titles/covers!" ;)

Lauren (laurenjberman) :0)

Actually my aunt told me the other day that an acquaintance said she was sad to hear it of my Dad's passing and she remembered him fondly because he helped her with her tax returns, lol!

*Dawn (x1f4dadawnx1f4da) | 208 comments BTW, I did finish Glory in Death . I was getting a little antsy with all the angst at first between Eve and Roarke, but I very much like how it turned out. I like how Roarke doesn't try to force her from doing her job, but he still shows his nervousness for her. I saw someone in a review disliked that "the little woman needed rescuing" but I thought it was handled well because we were able to see how tough Roarke is as well. Eve is such a strong figure; she needs an equal, and Roarke was given the opportunity to show us he is definitely more than just a business mogul.

He obviously knew the way into a woman's heart! ;)

Lauren (laurenjberman) He certainly did :0)

⚜️XAR the Bookwyrm (xar-the-bookwyrm) I'll be starting Immortal later today...anyone else ready to start with me?

⚜️XAR the Bookwyrm (xar-the-bookwyrm) PepperP0t wrote: "I'm on Rapture in Death"

That one's scheduled for later this month, I think.

*Dawn (x1f4dadawnx1f4da) | 208 comments I'm just waiting for my copy of Immortal to become available from the library. I haven't been able to track one down at the local thrift stores. Of course, I have a full box of the majority of all the other books in the series sitting right next to me... I'll catch up with you. :)

LaurLa | 3905 comments I can start Immortal today - well, later this evening.

⚜️XAR the Bookwyrm (xar-the-bookwyrm) I finished this one this morning...just in time for the Fatal Deception group read in one of my other groups! This one was pretty good, lots of red herrings. Really enjoyed it!

LaurLa | 3905 comments I'm in the middle. I just got to the part where (view spoiler) Anyway, I haven't run across a suspect yet, at least not that I feel strongly about.

LaurLa | 3905 comments I finished very early this morning with Immortal in Death. Since I've read this one before, I picked up on who the villian was (or who I thought it was) and I was right. But I thought she did well throwing us all off. Poor Peabody... I feel bad for her :-(

PepperP0t i liked that one the best so far LaurLa

*Dawn (x1f4dadawnx1f4da) | 208 comments Sorry, I forgot to check in. I finished Immortal. I had a hunch of who the killer was but honestly, from the last book, I was wondering if Peabody was going to end up being a villain, so I kept waiting to see if she was going to turn to the Dark Side.

Eve stresses me out a bit with all her hesitations and grumpiness with Roarke. She better not push it too far...

Immortal in Death J.D. Robb, #3 “In Death” series, 1-8-16 (3-1/2*), review

PepperP0t I like Peabody. In Sommerset was rather annoying. Though I'm glad his relationship with Roarke was explained and he showed a bit of empathy, he's quite grumpy to her.

LaurLa | 3905 comments Are we still looking at the 15th for Rapture In Death?

⚜️XAR the Bookwyrm (xar-the-bookwyrm) LaurLa wrote: "Are we still looking at the 15th for Rapture In Death?"

We were looking at starting it on the 17th, but I'm all for starting it earlier if everyone else would like to. My library copy is due back on the 16th and I just have to do a group read on the 11th -12th. If I finish the book I'm in the middle of, I could start it today if everyone agrees.

PepperP0t i'm fine with starting

*Dawn (x1f4dadawnx1f4da) | 208 comments Oh, good. I wouldn't mind speeding these up. They are quick reads and there are so many of them! I've also included all of these books on a TBR challenge, so that helps too. ;)

Lauren, how have you been holding up? You've been on my mind. Big changes in your world. Hope things are settling down a bit for you.

I thought this one provided a lot of food for thought regarding how far we could/should go in advancements dealing with the brain and fiddling with thought processes, etc.
