Hi,

actually there is quite a bunch of Perry Rhodan in my collection. Back in 2011 the publisher started Perry Rhodan Neo, a modernized reboot of the original Perry Rhodan stories from the 1960'. The original series is still being published, one new Issue of 64 pages each Friday since 1961, just today number 2844 got released. But I mostly read the new Interpretation, only on occasion, when there is some special not being part of the overall large story, I read some of the stories of the original series. I'm busy reading the new stuff and never had the incentive to try to catch up with 182.000 pages of the original stuff ;)
And you're right, most of the series got never translated into English, I guess it must something special to Germany that doesn't work well in other countries.
But if you're interested in trying some translations of German Science Fiction, a suggestion:
Heliosphere 2265, a SF-series from a very small publisher, that became quite popular since it's launch (originally as ebook-only) in 2012. You can find the Englisch version here:
http://www.heliosphere2265.com/

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments Actually the English translations were doing quite well for Ace Books. In fact the publisher was actually making a profit on them, which could not be said of other parts of the SF line. However the SF division got a new editor who hated that type of SF so he promptly cancelled the Perry Rhodan series. Pretty sure this was before Star Wars hit or he might not have been able to get away with it.

C.M. Herndon (cmherndon) | 3 comments Hi guys! I am very new to Goodreads, so bear with me as I learn and discover how to use it. I cant believe I've never used Goodreads before, this place is fantastic! As a reader, there's so many other amazing readers I can now communicate with. As an author, I believe I'll be able to reach many more readers on a personal level.

I'm just going to just go off what I see other people posting for their introduction. I'm Courtney (Author C.M. Herndon if anyone wants to know :) ). I love to read romantic suspense and science fiction romance. I have a much harder time finding the sci-fi romance, but Sherrilyn Kenyon's League novels are my absolute favorite. I tend to watch a lot more sci-fi than read, but if anyone has suggestions on sci-fi romance books I'll take it!

Aside from writing, you can usually find me at a cosplay convention, renaiisance faire, doing archery, or watching a movie. Despite my reading tendencies, I dont prefer chick flicks, I prefer action movies and sci-fi. Olympus Has Fallen is one of the best, Die Hard...Riddick is a fantastic sci-fi with action. Firefly is the bomb.

I have four dogs and two cats and I live in the beautiful Sunshine State. So thats my introduction. I look forward to conversations with everyone and talking about fantastic sci-fi space opera.

Christoph - A ST and B5 fan!!! In the 90s I took my daughter (then aged 12 to 15) to conventions and many of them combined the two shows. My daughter loves all things Trek but she didn't get into B5.

Not sure which is the best way to go. The books are more expensive on Amazon but I am not sure what shipping would be, though it seems reasonable on NESFA (if you live in the US, shipping to Canada is another matter altogether.)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments The NESFA at one time put out yearly indexes of what had appeared in the various SF magazines. This was basically a continuation of the Day index which covered mostly the 30s and 40s. I beleive they also started to cover the various anthologies of new SF, as opposed to those that reprinted older material. Probably a good idea as there are nowhere near as many magazines as there used to be. Handy reference works actually, though I don't know if they still put them out or not.

If I see one of the 'official' NESFA members while I'm floating around tomorrow, I'll ask? I know they had a panel on Fanzines and where they are today, but I didn't attend. They have a 'free' table where you can swap off your old books and they had this HUGE stack of old fanzines there on the table. NESFA is one of the precursors where they discuss nominations to the Hugo awards, so it wouldn't surprise me if they DO have some kind of reference list? It's probably now 100% digital.

Too bad I didn't see your question earlier :-) I was seated at a table next to a whole big group of them in the con-suite earlier today.

[*side-note: my husband is going to flip out when he sees how many more 'orphan' space opera books I just lugged home...*] 3:-)

Hello, my name is Louis even though here on goodreads it is listed as L. E.

I love Space opera as well as Urban Fantasy, regular fantasy, and almost all type of Science Fiction-including steampunk.

Favorite books are too many to list. I am an easy reader so a good portion of the books I read are on my favorites. But David Weber is among my favorite writers. As well as Jim Butcher, David Drake, James White, Ian Douglas, C. E. Murphy, Seanan McGuire

I don't watch much TV but Dr. Who has been one of of my favorites. I liked Above and Beyond except the ending-same for Quantum Leap, I might like the Shannara series and Sleepy Hollow as well as Penny Dreadful

Again there are too many moves to list my favorites but I like Mary Poppins, the Avenger movies, Red Skeleton movies Captain America too.

Too many favorite foods too. But Fried chicken, strawberries on vanilla ice cream, tacos, would be among them

I work as a blue collar worker overhauling cotton picker machines.

Main hobby is writing-which is all I will say about that here but neither of the two books I have Indie published are space opera even though I have written some space opera short stories non published-and some photography which I don't do enough of.

Terence Park | 11 comments Hi, I'm Terence Park. I live in Rossendale which is in North-West England (Up North for those in the know) and I've read SF since the 70s. Favourite authors have changed over the years. Those that have stayed the course include: Philip K Dick, Robert Heinlein, Roger Zelazny, Larry Niven, Frank Herbert and Brian Stableford. My favourite fiction genre is SF and I like well told Fantasy. I deliberately steer clear of Romance because I'm a sucker for it. Of course I read outside the field: Plato, Hermann Hesse, Doris Lessing, Dostoevsky, Kafka.
Apart from occasional historical documentaries, I watch BBC Parliament (for the banter and the barbs), televised Cricket, Rugby, and Premier League Football. My favourite movies are: Blade Runner, Lord of the Rings, Alien, Star Wars and Ghost Busters.
I like fresh fruit salad and...... I'm an accountant - I design business models - the less I say of that, the better y'all will feel.
I've collected hobbies over the years and never let go; they're still there to pick up on: 1960s and 1970s Marvel & DC, Ancient History, Penguin Classics, Philosophy, Photoshop, Audio Vinyl conversions...
I'm also a Goodreads Author.

Britt Ringel | 18 comments Hi, so happy to have found this group! I'm Britt Ringel, long-time military space opera fan, as well as scifi in general. I'll be spending the afternoon perusing the group's bookshelf to see what series I've missed. :)

Favorite authors include Jack Campbell, John Scalzi, David Weber, Steve White, Ian Douglas, John Ringo, Elizabeth Moon, and many more. Most recently read "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet" by Becky Chambers and thoroughly enjoyed it (don't know her, for the record, just a genuine reader recommendation here... her character development of several alien species in the book was something else).

TV: Currently binge-watching Leverage... not scifi but a fun series.

Hobbies: We RV a lot in the summers with our golden retriever. I also gamemaster RPGs (D&D, Pathfinder, Firefly, etc.) and play year-round with all my old, nerdy friends (and my wife!).

Day Job: Goodreads Author. I've been writing my military space opera series since 2013, currently working on my sixth book.

So much good sci-fi and fantasy have been penned by women (Bujold, Leckie, McKillip, Meyer, Butler, Walton, etc.). I also enjoy historical fiction, speculative fiction, non-fiction, biography, contemporary fiction, and mystery, etc.

I also enjoy writing goodreads/Amazon/audible reviews of the books I read. Hobbies: travel, camping, cycling, swimming, knitting, quilting, learning languages, etc. I don't watch TV very much (only a bit of Netflix...)

If my memory serves me correctly (apologies to Chairman Kaga) there were a couple of anthologies done years (decades?) ago featuring Sword and Sorcery stories written by women authors. Not sure if there exists such a thing for Space Opera itself but I am sure if there is someone here can lead you to it. If you haven't tried some of our older female writers here area few names: Leigh Brackett, C.L. Moore and Andre Norton. As well many (if not all) of the stories credited to Lewis Padgett were at least co-written by a female (Moore maybe, I will have to look that up)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments It was C.L Moore and Henry Kuttner who wrote jointly under the Lewis Padgett name, though Moore is on record as saying that the Gallegher stories are by Kuttner himself. It was normal for one of them to be working on a story and to leave it unfinished in the typewriter. The other would come along and continue working on it until either it was finished or they had to do something else. This would go on until the story got done. According to L. Sprague deCamp they were so in tune with each other that not ever they could tell who had written what in a story. Leigh Brackett's material is probably closer to Space Opera than Moore but both are great authors. Oddly enough Brackett was married to Edmond Hamilton but I am unaware of any collaborations between two. And now I will shut up with the history lesson before everyone gets too bored.

I believe Haffner Press, and maybe via Kindle (which I personally loathe) there was one collaboration between Edmond Hamilton and Leigh Brackett Stark and The Star Kings. I seem to recall seeing mixed reviews shortly after it came out, and the hardcover is way too pricey for me to satisfy my curiosity as to the story's quality.

According to Wikipedia the book is a cross-over of Brackett's Eric John Stark series and Hamilton's Star Kings series. It is a very rare collaboration between the two. Unlike Moore and Kuttner who collaborated quite a bit Hamilton and Brackett seldom if ever did.
