I'm fine with booning it. Our current boon expires at the end of the week anyway. I'll give it a little bit of time for the rest of the team to respond saying they have a book that will work.

Otherwise I'll put in the boon request this evening.

~Australia Day Mini Challenge~

This is an OPTIONAL mini-challenge for our Tower Teams which will run from Jan 1 to Jan 31, 2016

Australia Day is the official National Day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, it marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales

How to Play
◈ Your team will be given a crossword puzzle with 6 facts about Australia.
◈ We have created three different puzzles with varying levels of letter difficulty for the teams at the top of the overall leader board, (puzzle A) middle (puzzle B)and lowest (puzzle C)
◈ Once you have the 6 answers, these become the words your team needs to “spell-it-out”
◈ For each word completed, you can choose a book read by your team in December to claim DOUBLE POINTS for (page points only, not goal points)
◈ A book can only be claimed for double points once. (i.e. you can't use the same book of 130 points to keep doubling)
◈ Each spell-it-out word can only be completed once for double points
◈ Books read AT ANY TIME during the challenge can count for the spell-it-out , but DO need to be separate books from those you claimed for goals.
◈ The usual book length rules apply, Books must be more than 100 pages in length and Children's books and Graphic Novels can not be used unless by word count they can be verified as more than 25,000 words using arbookfind.com
◈ Spreadsheets will be updated for the Captains to update and track the teams points

Spell-it-out rules

Using the first letter in the book’s title, the first letter in the author’s first or last name, or the first letter of a character’s first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter in the audiobook narrators first or last name.. As always, if the first letter of a title starts with ‘A’, ‘An’, ‘The’, etc., you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word.

I can't figure out 5 across. Im currently working on a w and my next book will probably be an i.

Hope everyone had a fun and safe New Year's and is looking forward to another glorious book filled year!

message 715: by Dragana (new)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) Happy New Year everyone!

Great job figuring out the word Caroline. :)
Those chunksters we all read in December are going to pay off now. ;)

message 716: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 7477 comments Mod
I'm marking books on the goalless tab that we can use to spell out the words Caroline figured out and highlighting the rows.

That should speed things along once the Mods are able to update the spreadsheets so Dragana/Imke/I can fill in the books for the bonus points.

Although if I book I highlight fits a new goal that pops up before the mini-challenge tab is active we should use it for the goal instead. The good news is we aren't just limited to the title letters and can use author, characters, etc. It'll give us a lot of flexibility it what we are able to use for the mini challenge.

And hell if I can figure out what 5a is! Google is SO letting me down right now.

message 717: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 7477 comments Mod
Dragana and I filled out the Jan mini challenge information. With the books on the goalless tab we were able to complete spelling out all of the answers to the crossword.

So our goalless tab is looking fairly empty now, but we just earned a lot of points without having to dig around for books that would meet the requirements.

Win-Win

message 718: by Dragana (new)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) When I was checking the number of chapters for Frozen I saw it has quotes from another author at the beginning of the book. I am not sure if it can work for goal: "Read a book that contains a quote from another author in the text". Does someone remembers?

message 719: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 7477 comments Mod
I would think so. When we had the goal before I used American Gods because before some of the chapters there were quotes from other books.

I see this as the same thing.

message 720: by Dragana (new)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) Great, I saved Frozen, since it has a poem and I remember there is a goal for that too and used other book instead.

Used The Darkest Part of the Forest read by me for goal: Read a book that contains a quote from another author in the text

Used Cinder read by Imke for goal: Read a book that is in the "Books that Exceeded your Expectations" Listopia List

Used Scarlet read by Imke for goal: Read a book shelved (listed on the first page of the ""top shelves"" of the book) as 4-stars

New goal: Read a book that contains the word beetroot (or beets)

message 721: by [deleted user] (new)

So I joined the Six of Crows discussion when it was book of the month in November but I didn't finish the book until mid december and didn't get most of the discussion questions done until then too. Does it still count?

message 722: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 7477 comments Mod
I think so, as long as it's within 30 days of starting. I'll double check and if you can still get the points I'll add them to the spreadsheet

message 723: by Tori (new)

Tori Coulson how is everyone today? what are we all thinking of our current books?

message 724: by Imke (new)

Imke (immie75) | 1644 comments Hi Tori. I'm doing great, I'm on vacation and it's sunny and warm. I just started reading Cress and the current BOM. I like Cress (the previous two Cinder and Scarlet were also great) so I'm almost set to read the YA BOM Winter. The current BOM a darker shade of magic is good but it is early on in the book.

message 725: by Tori (new)

Tori Coulson oooo I'm glad the weather is good for you! it's rainy and horrid here but my lad and I put our coats and boots on and went for a nice walk earlier. I enjoyed cinder but I haven't read the books in between to join to BOM so I decided to skip it. I'm reading colour of magic and although it's fun it isn't blowing me away or anything :(

Hi Tori. We had our first snow tonight so the plan for today is to take out the kiddo to play (his first snow ever). I am looking forward to see his reaction. :)
Lately I've been reading a lot of science fiction. I just finished Fairest, a story about Levana. It's a nice history of her character. I am all ready for the 'Winter' BOM too. :)

So did we finish the mini challenge or what are we missing?

message 733: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 7477 comments Mod
We actually had enough books on the goalless tab to fill out the mini challenge with what was already read by the team

message 734: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 7477 comments Mod
It almost wiped out our unused books and we need to pick one more book to double the points of, but other than that the mini challenge is done.

We decided to wait a couple days for any December books to straggle in before selecting the final book for double points in case people read some longer ones over the break and didn't post until after the holidays. We used anything that was worth 80 points or more already but it left one open spot.

The mini challenge tab is filled out, let us know if there are any questions.
