Scrabble, Part 2 - The Game
This part’s going to take some planning (and probably some frustration, but some of you thrive on that). Each team will need a grid of some kind. I used a blank one for my example, but you can get as creative as you want. We’re going to play Scrabble using the first word of our book titles. Each team will be playing its own game. There will be two each mystery double word and double letter squares, and one each triple word and letter squares. If your word is longer than 7 letters, only use the first 7.
Example: My team read the following books. We could connect our words as in the grid.
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking
Death of Kings
The Queen of Palmyra
Winter Siege
The Battle for Skandia
The Yearling
Victory of Eagles
Then the value of the words would be calculated using the Scrabble tile points.
For the anal nutcases – and yes there are quite a few- Try not to go overboard looking for words with the most overall value, you’ll only drive yourself and your team insane and it would take way too much time. For others, like me, let’s just hope we get some books picked out on time.
***Clarification for one word titles***For Part 2, if you have any, a one word title should be the first word on your board, and it will be the only one word title used. So no, you can't read all the Sue Grafton books and randomly use letters of the words already on the board to claim another title. The next word would connect to your one letter title, and you'd go from there like normal play.
Let me know if there are any questions about this.
I couldn't for the life of me work out how I had read all my K and J books, I swear I owned more... On "Read" shelf, not "Own" shelf. /facepalm
Yay! I have a Q book. It's book 3 in a trilogy that I had scheduled for the serial killer challenge. I'd better get reading book 2.
I have been meaning to read The Xibalba Murders since I first heard about it. It looks like a good place to start.
Quick question. I live in the UK so do I start at 5pm on the Saturday 17th?
Hi Anna, If that's when 12pm EDT is when converted to the UK, yup. I'm in Aus, so the time for me is like 2am Sunday. We all start at the same time no matter where in the world we are for Topplers.Hope that helps.
Wonderful. Thanks for clarifying Rusalka & Sarah.
I am in if its not too late. Never done a challenge like this, sounds fun. But pardon my ignorance, what is gophering?

Gophering is the act of digging through our books and shelves to find books that match the criteria of various challenges and activities here in You'll Love This One. There's a thread called "glossing the glossary" that has lots of other weird and wonderful words, some of which are peculiar to this group.

I used 10 by 10 for my example because it was easiest. I think it would be safer to start with a larger one to make playing around easier. It's up to each team.
I'm in (the time/week is good for me)I forgot. I'll be outside the Net in the coming week. So if I could participate still would be great (my team could be not thrilled about it, though)
I'm confused. Post #1 says the first letter of the title of my book determines how much my book is worth. Post #2 says, "Then the value of the words would be calculated using the Scrabble tile points." I don't really understand what the purpose of the scrabble board is if we're just adding up the value of the books read based on first letter, unless it means that books not fitting in would be excluded?
You're right,Theresa, they don't match. I've actually gophered twice and I'm not sure which set is correct. Didn't even notice the discrepancy, just thought I had done it wrong the first time. lol

You're on Team A. I'm sure they'll be thrilled to have you.

He he he! My evil plan is working. Actually both ways are right - but they're separate things. The points in Part 1 are just for reading the book, while Part 2 points take some plotting and planning.Part 1 -> You'll get the points from the first letter of the first word of your book title when you read it. That's automatic.
Part 2 -> At some point the teams will start playing around with fitting those first words onto a Scrabble board or a grid. The points will be counted just as in Scrabble (remember only the first 7 letters are used if the word is longer). This will take more work to try and fit all the words. No points for words not connected.
I used a 10 x 10 grid for my example, but please use a 15 x 15 board/grid for part 2. After Part 2 is completed I'm going to have the fruit machine pick some squares for the bonus points, so the boards need to be the same size.

Team 1. I've confused myself on which terminology I used :) I think next time I'll use thingamajigs, whatchamacallits, and doohickeys. ☺
Question, we don't use "a" and "the" for the title, so do we also skip "an"? (Because "an" is also an article.)

Mariab, if course we are thrilled!☺ Come on over and help team 1 chose a name.

An edit to part 1:Read anything you want. Using the first letter of the first word of the title (excluding The, A, and An) will determine how many points your book is worth
Why not? We have some readers-in-other-than english readers in my team. I assume we just fit them into the scrabble board as we would with English words. As long as you read the book, it should work.Jmom? Am I talking crap again?
Edit: In my line of thinking, I would assume we would just take out punctuation if it is there though. So "J'adore" would be "Jadore" for the board

Yep, we’re playing Scrabble, with a few moderations. I don’t want it to be too easy ☺
Read anything you want. Using the first letter of the first word of the title (excluding The, A, and An) will determine how many points your book is worth.
For example:
I read Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking. The letter Q is worth 10 points so my team gets 10 points.
But if I read All Quiet on the Western Front, my team only gets 1 point for the book since the first word starts with an A.
This Toppler is one week long. It will begin at noon on Saturday, October 17th, and end at noon on Sunday, October 24th. The times are Eastern Daylight Savings Time (EDT).
A few rules:
1. Books must be started and finished in this time period to qualify.
2. You may read any format - paperback, hardcover, ebook, or audiobook. For the last two use the page numbers on the first edition that comes up on the GR page.
3. Each book must be at least 175 pages.
4. Toppler books can count toward the monthly challenge, the group theme read, and the yearly challenge if they qualify.
5. You may plan ahead and chose books for the challenge, but you are not restricted to those books. You may swap them out at will.
There’s more to come, to be posted later.
