That's great that it all worked so well! Hopefully the first night was a good one!
Happy unpacking :-) Finding new places for things can be quite fun.

So if no one else has anything for goal 5, I'll start The Frog Princess on audio and have it done pretty quickly as the library has the ebook and audiobook versions. (checked word count and it is ok at 49,050)
I'll just need to pause Dracula for a day while I listen to it

Great, Thanks Juliana! I'll read the other anyway as its a small book and I often listen to audiobooks when I wake through the night to help me sleep. Dracula is not really the best choice for that (so I was awake today from 4am haha).
If you finish first then my book will give us another .5 attack point anyway!

I finally finished The Bone Clocks, it was a long one but thankfully worth the time spent on it.Pages 608
Goals: nothing yet, but will work for multiple narrators on audio if that goal comes up again.
Wow, it's amazing what happens overnight! Congratulations on being moved in Marguerite! Welcome back Lucy!
I started Queen Lucia last night so that would also work for the new goal. Or it could be a handy Q title. Whoever finishes first I guess.
Teri-k, thanks for the recommendation, I'd not heard of her before. Mind you I hadn't heard of EF Benson until Mapp and Lucia was on tv last Christmas. A rare occurrence when I haven't read the book first!

Great!
Great!
Finished Death of a Red Heroine by Qiu Xiaolong 465 pages on 8/23/15. Goal Author whose name starts with XIt was an OK book. It had a lot of references to Chinese culture and history. The author lives in the US so he took the time to explain all of the references and why they were significant to the story so it was interesting. I think the next one in the series would be a faster read because a lot of the political and cultural context has now be established.
Hooray for finishing, Karrie!
Can imagine that reading such references doesn't make for the easiest reading material but it's certainly interesting.

Yes, it was very interesting. But I think using our boon on the next X was wise. I am looking forward to reading something that will move a little faster!
I scrounged my bookshelves for a book with "a novel" in the title and came up blank. I do own the book "Max" by James Paterson. The book says a maximum ride novel on the cover, but I think the title is Max. I could also get Z A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald on my Ereader from the library. I see we also have one listed on our spreadsheet. Any other ideas?

I LOVED IT! I thought it was quite interesting, and it wasn't completely predictable for me so I appreciated it a lot. I'm excited to read the entire trilogy! I totes recommend it! :)
Here's what I could find on my bookshelves:A Song for Issy Bradley: A Novel (I've read it already)
Not available at library in print or ebook, or for decent price on Kobo, or on Scribd:
The Silent History: A Novel
Last Train to Babylon: A Novel
Call Me Home: A Novel
The Unquiet Dead: A Novel
I'm out of ideas
Feast for Thieves: A Rowdy Slater Novel showed up on OverDrive yesterday. I'll start it and alternate with Nine Coaches Waiting. If no one else finishes one first. I finished
. Not for a goal.
What about if the cover says "a novel" on it after the title but GRs just doesn't have the info in the title. That should count right?I found this book read by Melissa: Secrets of a Charmed Life. If you enlarge the cover, it clearly says "A novel"
I noticed when searching books from the library website that many books have "a novel" on the cover but it's not put into Goodreads that way.
I have 3 on my shelves here on GR. One of those is in a box somewhere at my parents' because I had to read it for school and I have no clue where that box would be. The other one is the English translation of a German book I love but which I've literally just given to a friend yesterday so she can read it.
The third is: The House of Silk: The New Sherlock Holmes Novel.
The third is: The House of Silk: The New Sherlock Holmes Novel.
I think it should be ok if it's on the cover but not the Goodreads title. I checked in the librarian's group and found that "Title: A novel" is actually incorrect according to the official rules. Here is the info I found (I bolded the appropriate portion):
subtitle
The subtitle should also match the cover of the book. Bear in mind that books are sometimes republished with different subtitles, so a subtitle for one edition should not be assumed to be present on all editions. When a book has a subtitle, the subtitle should be separated from the main title by a language-appropriate separator (in English or if the separator is unknown, use a colon) and a single space. The phrase "A Novel" is not considered a subtitle. The phrase "A Novel Of {Something}" or "A {Something} Novel", where {something} is the book's series, should be considered a series indicator rather than a subtitle, and so it should not be present in the title field except as part of the series (see below for series).
Examples of subtitles:
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl
Ghosts of Gettysburg: Spirits, Apparitions and Haunted Places of the Battlefield
Alice und das Land im Nadelöhr. Die weiteren Abenteuer von Alice im Wunderland
Birdsong: A Novel of Love and War
Not:
Among the Living: A PsyCop Novel
These books all have "a novel" on the cover but not in the Goodreads title, for example:
Normal
All the Light We Cannot See
My Sister's Keeper
Gone Girl
Everything I Never Told You
What do you guys think?

Personally I'd keep it simple and go with the GR record as it shows for the book. But whatever the group thinks.
That's useful information, Joanne, thanks!
Since we did find a book though where "a novel" is actually in the title that is put up on GR, it might be best to just go for that one. I'm all for keeping things as simple as possible.

I don't understand. Doesn't the goal say "a novel" in the title. Then shouldn't we bee looking for "a novel" as part of the title. I can see checking to see if it is allowable in a subtitle. But clearly in the case of "Max" it would be right out.
I'm just concerned that since having "...:A novel" in the title is a mistake, it could be removed at any time.Found this thread in the librarians group:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Here is the title of the book I am considering if we do not have any current books to meet the goal. Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald Because there is a colon, does that make A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald a subtitle? Here is the book link Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald I will not get it if it will not work or we can use something else. Otherwise I will start so that it can be done by the end of this round. Let me know what to do.
If it's removed after we've chosen a book for the goal that's bad luck but won't change the fact that it fit at the moment of choosing - just like with the ever-changing book depository list.
Agreed Karrie, "Max" would be out of the question for the goal because "a novel" is merely an indication of which series it belongs to but it isn't part of the actual title. For some other books, I've always felt that it was part of the title but that might also just be an impression certain covers give.

Karrie wrote: "Here is the title of the book I am considering if we do not have any current books to meet the goal. Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald Because there is a colon, does that make A Novel of Zelda Fitz..."This one is perfectly fine. It's only in the case of a generic "a novel" after the title that it's a problem.
I posted a question in the questions thread. If needed, that Zelda book will work for sure. I just found a book already read that I think should count and would like to use that one if we can.
Teri's already reading an "a novel" book as well - just in case that message went under in the conversation :-)
Sorry for getting all excited about this one guys, I let my competitive spirit get away from me I think. I'm gonna go relax with a book now.
No need to apologize, we're all trying to figure this out together. :)I suggest we get the mods official ruling on whether currently listed subtitles count, then go from there as we usually do, with first book finished counting.
Haha no worries, Joanne! That happens to the best of us, and often enough as well :-)
This is a competition after all! But as I always say, don't forget that it should still be enjoyable and that reading is for fun, whether we're the first or the last team :-)

Great Melissa! Updating the goal now!
** New Goal **Read a book whose author (first or last) starts with K.
I didn't find one in Varro's spreadsheet.
Got the OK from the Ludus thread to use book even if "a novel" isn't in the goodreads title.Books that work are
Secrets of a Charmed Life and Station Eleven

In that case - Juliana, which one would you prefer to use? Then I'll go update the goal :-)

I have The Opposite of Loneliness: Essays and Stories by Marina Keegan checked out. I will read that
Making the decision to go with Station Eleven because the character names in the other one strike me as potentially useful for future goals ;-)
