Great task! Geesh...mine are lame in comparison.I'm going with Alabama, book 1 by Amy Lane TBD, and book 2 Red Dirt Heart
Hey Andy, appreciate the thought behind this task indeed. Also, I got to know the nicknames of so many states which I had no clue of prior to this. Thanks !Planning to go for these two books, hope they fit in !

I'm going to say no because I think if I allow this it is going to get much more complicated to make judgements. As the task stands it says the word must match exactly with the exception of plural/singular nouns.
Susan A wrote: "Great task! Geesh...mine are lame in comparison.I'm going with Alabama, book 1 by Amy Lane TBD, and book 2 Red Dirt Heart"
Yes, assuming Amy Lane has written some books. I'm not familiar with this author.

These are both fine.

You have misunderstood the task. The state nickname must be for the state whose author author you have chosen for book 1

Dang, but I understand. The author lives in Nevada and the stories are western, so I thought I might get by with it;)

Yes these books will work for Montana, but to make it easier on the moderators, please identify the state and the state's nickname that you are using when you post.
Andy wrote: Yes, assuming Amy Lane has written some books. I'm not familiar with this author. "Yes! 76 of them.
State: Alabama (AL)
Author: Amy Lane Behind the Curtain
Motto: Heart of Dixie Red Dirt Heart
I will check for length approval in the appropriate thread if required.

Thanks a lot!!!!! Will bear that in mind future
Cathy wrote: "Can I use an anthology as long as one of the authors matches my state's abbreviation?"I would really rather that you didn't. I have approved a coauthor so I will allow two but no more than that. The multiple author thing makes things much more complicated and it isn't really fair to the people who have gone to the trouble to find a book by one author that meets the task's requirements. After all it is supposed to be a challenge.
These are good right?Book 1:Conjure Wife by Fritz Leiber (State: Florida, FL)
Book 2: Hurry Down Sunshine by Michael Greenberg
(state nickname: SUNSHINE state)
Am I correct that these would work:Book 1:Under the Wide and Starry Sky by Nancy Horan

2. Big Sky State - Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson
Helen wrote: "I think these work. Please verify1. Montana (MT) - Margaret Truman - Murder on K Street

Hi Helen,
Andy's out of town for the day and asked me to answer questions for her. Unfortunately, while Hattie Big Sky fits the task, it has the genre "childrens" on it's main page. Books with the genre "children's" must have more than 300 pages to be used for a 25 point task. The edition you linked to only has 289 pages. If you actually have and read an edition that is 300+ pages, make sure that's the edition you link to when you post.
Kristi (Passion for the Page) wrote: "Helen wrote: "I think these work. Please verify1. Montana (MT) - Margaret Truman - Murder on K Street

Thanks for checking. The version I will be reading is the kindle version which shows 322 pages - so I will be okay with number of pages. Whew - since it is the perfect book for Montana. But I did learn a couple of things:
One, it is definitely YA (Newberry Honor) and historical fiction genre but a few people did list it as children's. So I need to be sure to read the whole genre list since some people have a strange concept of book genres.
Two, there is a whole page of editions, most of which are over 300 pages but the first one listed is the 289 one. This is the one which comes up on the "add book/author" link when posting. Ergo, must be more careful to ensure going to a second level to get the right edition with each post. Ugh.
Thanks for the feedback.
Helen wrote: "The version I will be reading is the kindle version which shows 322 pages - so I will be okay with number of pages."Just for future reference, you can't use Kindle versions for page numbers. The challenge rules say:
8. When determining page count, you should go by the copy you read- EXCEPT as noted below for ebooks, audiobooks, and large print books. If you read an ebook, or audiobook use the page count for the mass market paperback if one exists. If there is no mass market paperback edition, use the paperback edition and if no paperback is available use the hardcover edition.
However, as far as I can tell, all the paperback versions of Hattie Big Sky are over 300 pages.
To find the edition I want to add to my posts, I find it easiest to go to the book's main page first, copy the ISBN number, and put that into the "add book/author" box. That ensures that the edition I want is the one that comes up.
Could I read a book by Margaret Atwood (Massachusetts) and have the second one be:The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared?
Just wanted to double-check since the "old" (for 'Old Colony State') is part of a hyphenated phrase.

Since many of the properties on the Monopoly board are the names of states, I've used the 50 United States as a basis for this task.
Read 2 books.
Book 1. Using the official two letter abbreviation for the 50 states, choose an author whose initials match one of those abbreviations. First and last names ONLY--middle names and initials should be ignored. The author's initials must be In THE SAME ORDER as the state's abbreviation. If a book has two authors, only one of the coauthors initials must meet the criteria. Book by more than two authors will not work for this task. For example if I chose Pennsylvania, I could use either Paul Auster or Piers Anthony, but NOT Anne Perry because the initials are not in the correct order.
Book 2. Using the same state, consult the list of state nicknames and match one of the words in the title/subtitle with your chosen state's nickname. The words "the" and "of" are excluded--they MAY NOT be used. The chosen word MUST appear on the list--nicknames not on the list are not allowed. Pennsylvania, for example, has two nicknames so I could use either Keystone State or Quaker State. Thus, for my second book the Title/Subtitle would have to contain either the word Keystone, Quaker or State. Singular/plural forms of a noun are acceptable, but no other variations are allowed.
Required: Identify the state and nickname being used when you post. If the GRs description does not make it clear, explain how your book fits the task.
