Ethelind stalks into the Erudite Initiate's Dormitory. Under her arm, she has clutched, a book of A Tale of Two Cities, looking about her, warily, before striding over to one of the spare bunks and leaving down her bags and equipment. She sets a small moonstone; a token from her mother, who she would not be seeing for the time being, on the dresser and smiled to herself. She had always wanted to pick Erudite. To change factions, never occurred to her. She breathed in the fresh and familiar scent of home. Her fingers gripped the blankets over the mattress of the bed, as she lay back against the covers. With a sigh of relief, she closed her eyes and took a silent moment to think over her choices.
Ethelind felt her eyes travel downwards towards the book, sitting propped open on her lap. It was of Dicken's, one of her favourite authors of all time. She had read his other books, and appreciated hem greatly. A scoff escaped her throat. It was a horrible, snorting sound, in the back of her mouth. To think I could ever leave this place. Leave these things behind, she thought gradually. Would she have ever been able to do this at say - Dauntless? Would she have to leave her books behind? What would they do to her if she did? Would they let her bring her knowledge and power with her?
No.. she thought eventually. Probably not..
Her hands trailed the long, smooth surface of the walls; the chipped cracks in the foundation. She smiled serenely, and let out a breath she didn't know she was holding.
And the people here... she pondered, My family... My blood... Would I be able to meet other people like that at Dauntless? Could I really get on with those Amity girls who treated life like some sort of game to them. Like it's not worth anything. Throwing it away; being kind to others. It's just lies in pretty packaging. Knowledge she concluded distantly, Knowledge is power..
Ethelind crouched down on the floor, and flicked her trunk open, revealing a set of leather-bound books. How could I not miss this? Book had been the foundation of her life for so long, just like cement was the foundation of a building; and without it, it would fall, but surely.
She sighed again, and looked around the room. No... The tension left her shoulders, slightly, just slightly. The Dauntless would probably notice, though... NO... That wasn't where she belonged... It was here. Always here; and gradually, with her book, leather-bound, just like the others; a hardback, she noticed, dropping to her side, and laying spread wide open with its pages; a crumpled, abused tangle of mess; worn from years of use, and it's broken spine. The tension was leaving her shoulders, now, she noted, with relief. She was falling asleep... She was not selfish... She was not brave... Not Divergent... Or Dauntless.. She wasn't Amity... Nor Abnegation. She was an Erudite. She was better than that... She was an Erudite.
