What Else Are You Reading - January 2014
I think this year I'm going to start off with Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch. I think I might add some nonfiction later in the month. I've found myself becoming interested in vikings once again, so I might try and find some good history books.
Reading through Grimspace, next two on the list are Redshirts and Revelation Space. Starting off the year with a big sci-fi kick.
Going to finish Odd Thomas, hopefully today, then kick off The Einstein Intersection on Kindle and Steelheart (finally!) in audio. That's the plan to start 2014, anyway...
While I wait for my copy of The Einstein Intersection to arrive I'll be reading Magician, The Alienist and The Hunter.
As the year begins, I finished Red Harvest (not the worst Star Wars book I've ever read) and started Annihilation: Star Wars (The Old Republic) by Drew Karpyshyn. So far it's pretty entertaining and I think that'll be the end of the Star Wars books for a while.
I'm resolving to empty my current To Read List this year. So Abaddon's Gate, Happy Hour in Hell & Doctor Sleep top my reading list. Anyone read any of those yet?
Derek wrote: "I'm resolving to empty my current To Read List this year. So Abaddon's Gate, Happy Hour in Hell & Doctor Sleep top my reading list. Right now I'm reading Elantris, after that I'll read this month lasor pick and Eragon, and the rest of the series.
Was going to post this in December's thread because I got it in before the clock, but I didn't write my review fast enough before one of the mods locked it. ^_^
Finished City of Dragons with a few hours to spare before the new year (My Review)
Finished City of Dragons with a few hours to spare before the new year (My Review)
Just got The Blade Itself for christmas so that's number 1. After that I'll start my annual "read the next book in every series I have started"-a-thon. Haven't decided what order I'll be tackling those yet-depends on what the library has in I suppose. I also have a bunch of stuff on my nook, including a collection of all the Sherlock Holmes stories since I find myself totally hooked on that show :P.
Finished The Einstein Intersection pretty quickly, so I'm making a big stab at my to-read list. Going to finally finish Last Argument of Kings, then finish The Long Walk: A Story of War and the Life That Follows as part of my efforts to read more non-fiction this year.
Finished The Emerald Storm The Riyria Revelations 4 on AudibleMy Review
Continuing the series with Wintertide The Riyria Revelations 5
Finished The Einstein Intersection, so I'm going to read The Returned to prepare for the upcoming ABC series which is called Resurrection. If I finish it before the February book is announced, I want to either read The Leftovers or finish the Dragonriders of Pern trilogy
I'm reading Embedded
Its by Dan Abnett one of the writers of the Guardians of the Galaxy series from Marvel Comics that is now a movie coming out in August. He's also a writer in the Warhammer 40K Universe.
I'm re-reading A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson for my f2f book club. Listening to it on audio is great fun. It's read by the same guy who read Cloud Atlas which makes it even more interesting for some reason. I've also signed up for the TBR Triple Dog Dare so I can whittle a few titles off my TBR pile: http://readywhenyouarecb.blogspot.com...
Just getting into this anthology of tales based on Kepler discoveries:
And thoroughly enjoying Walter Isaacson's Einstein biography:
I'm listening to Shadow's Edge and will move on to Swan Song when I am done with that.In print, I'm reading City of Lost Dreams--a real paper book from the library. And, I'm reading Steelheart on my Nook before I move onto The Einstein Intersection.
I'm really trying to make a tiny dent in my reading backlog before I buy any more books.

I enjoyed his stuff in The Horus Heresy and Gaunts Ghosts. I have this title but haven't read it yet. I'll be interested to hear what you think.
Finished The Cloudstone Key by indie author Darren T PatrickMy review
Continuing on to the next book in the series The Peregrine Prophecy
I finished reading The Summer Tree last night. I gave it 3 stars; intersting enough to continue the series but I'm in no rush.
Brian: Let me know how you like The Golem and the Jinni; I have it but I've been keeping it for a Fantasy challenge on spring. Jeff: I really liked Daughter of Smoke & Bone and the audio was great. Hope you like it too :)
Carolina, The Golem and the Jinni was a wonderful read. I loved the blend of historical fiction and fantasy. It wasn't as romantic as I expected. That's a good thing.

I just gave the Golem and the Jinni to a friend as a Christmas gift. She promised to lend it to me after she's read it.
I read through And Then There Were None in less than a day and I'm currently reading The Blinding Knife.
Sandi wrote: "Carolina, The Golem and the Jinni was a wonderful read. I loved the blend of historical fiction and fantasy. It wasn't as romantic as I expected. That's a good thing."I just started it New Years Day and I like it so far, I did think it was going to have a romantic interlude so I am interested now in how that will work out.
Finished the last book of the Star Trek: The Fall series, Peaceable Kingdoms, which was a bit "meh". Currently reading Dark Horse: The Surprise Election and Political Murder of President James A. Garfield. A great book about Garfield's election, contrasted with what was happening at the same time to the man who killed him.
Holy crap. I just finished Frank Schatzing's 1200 page Limit. My review. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just finished Stephen King's on writing...https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
An amazing book and worth a read even if you aren't ever planning to be an author, especially if you are a Stephen King fan.
The first section is a fascinating tour of his early life and experiments in writing through to when he made it big. The second section deals with the process of writing, but I still think non-authors would enjoy learning how the great master approaches his art. The third section deals with his accident and the immediate aftermath (the book was finished a year or two after it happened).
I've just started reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. It has an amazing start that has you gripped and completely immersed in the story from the first page. Really enjoying it so far.

Christopher wrote: "A Wizard of Earthsea, first time, loving it."One of my favorites by that author. I need to work it into the "reread" list someday soon.
Jon wrote: "I'm hip-deep in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series. And loving it."One of my favorite series, second only to The Lord of The Rings.
I liked The Golem and the Jinni too! My first read of the year was The Holders by Julianna Scott, which is an eARC of book two of her Seers series, YA fantasy.
Finished Annihilation: Star Wars (The Old Republic) and started reading Against the Fall of Night. No, not Against the Fall of Night, Against the Fall of Night by Michael Arnold -- a big, fat historical novel set at the tail end of the Byzantine Empire.
I'm currently reading Dangerous Women, which is really popular of a read. I'm not a big fan of anthologies or short stories, so its nothing really special for me. If I did not find it sitting on my local library's shelf yesterday, I would have never bother with reading it.
Jennifer wrote: Just started The Shadow of the Wind this evening. I'm about 50 pages in and I'm loving it.The Shadow of the Wind is one of my favorite novels. Loved the Cemetery of Forgotten Books. :)
Finished up The Einstein Intersection. Still working on London Falling and Homeland. I kinda hit my goal for last year, and then didn't make any effort to finish off more books.
Starting the year off with A Memory of Light along with The Blade Itself. After that I'm going to jump into some sci-fi for my next few reads.
I finished Divergent yesterday (didn't like it much, probably won't read the sequels).Over the weekend, I found a copy of Ringworld at the bookstore. I didn't get a chance to read it along with the book club so I plan to catch up now.
While I am waiting for my hold request to come through on The Einstein Intersection I checked Reamde out of the library on my Kindle. I had almost forgotten how addictive Neal Stephenson's writing is.After last month's discussion of dragons and dragon lore, I could not help myself and also requested The Reluctant Dragon from the library. Who cares if it's cataloged in the children's section. I have fond memories of seeing a claymation version of the story on the PBS show "Long Ago and Far Away" (hosted by James Earl Jones) back when I could barely read.

I'd second that. I'm not a fan of horror or even Stephen King but he sure knows how to write well about writing well. I'd have it as part of high school composition classes, if I had my way.

For me I plan to read some nonfiction in order to start the year off.
