Around the World in 80 Books Challenge - 2014

For this challenge, either choose 80 books and see how many different places you visit, or choose 80 different countries and read at least one book from each destination. Start a post and add to it throughout the year listing the country, title of the book, author, and date finished. Imaginary places (i.e Narnia, Middle Earth) don't count. Have fun!

Sounds like fun! I like the I challenge of trying to find books from different countries. It gives you an incentive to try books you might not otherwise read.
I wonder if anyone will actually manage to visit 80 countries?! Just updated my post for this year's version of the challenge and though I've been reading stuff from all over the place, I've only hit 25 countries.
I may as well try again, cause it might push me to seek out more African and South American fiction. Those continents were shamefully empty this year!

This sounds like great fun. 80 is a lot though a good challenge.
80 countries does seem like a lot. I've only visited 30 in this year's challenge, but I'll try harder next year!
Yep, I won't read that many books anyway. But maybe I'll try some personal challenge, though I haven't figured out how, yet. Like try to read books from every European country (the whole world might be too much) over the next few years, or read "travel" books and see how many countries I can visit that way.
I just read Around the World in 80 Days. Too bad it wasn't a January read as it would have been a good start on the countries list. I am assuming we can use a book for more than one country if applicable.

I used cheating rules for last year's challenge, and I did only join in October, but nonetheless, I only got to 19 countries (including the North Pole, lol), and 19 states (including DC) :-o.

I was going to keep track of the various states as well since a lot of the books I read take place in the US.

For me, the whole point is to challenge oneself to explore literature outside of one's preferred culture and setting, otherwise it wouldn't be a "challenge". If it hadn't been for Trisha's creation of this year's challenge, I wouldn't have read books like Jane Smiley's The Greenlanders, which I am very glad I read. Although I don't know if I will be able to complete the challenge, I am looking forward to the journey and the learning experience.
Just a word of a warning: I have found some weird books set in Finland that just make me think "WTF!" The worst offender I've seen is Vaino: A Boy Of New Finland. She didn't even bother to get the warring sides of the conflict correct (or anything else for that matter) and named her main charactor as 'Persecution'. Well done... There are newer books, too, that just don't really feel right, even if I can't find any actual mistakes in the blurbs. (Like Your Presence Is Requested at Suvanto. Lots of Americans in some remote hospital in Finland during the 1920s... I don't think so. First of all, the main foreign language at the time was German, English wasn't spoken that much. Even the cover photo looks more like Norway than Finland, well "maybe" Petsamo...) Most of these have never been heard of here.I bet this happens with other countries, too. But I am not saying The Greenlanders is one of those books, it just reminded me of it because I couldn't find any Nordic reviews about it.

Thanks for the advice about the Finland books! The Greenlanders is a book in which the landscape plays a major role (I watched a video on Greenland to get myself acquainted with it), and the author did a lot of research before writing it. However, it's very long and written like a Norse epic with a lot of characters to keep track of, so it's definitely not for everyone. Also, I noticed that some people want to do a US tour and that sounds fun too, you could put that up in a different thread for those who just want to do that.

Remember you don't have to do a challenge, and if you want to do a different one -- post it in a new thread and invite others to join you.
I think the warning applies to other smaller and/or "exotic" countries, too. Foreigners seem to think strange things about Finland and probably we do the same with countries we don't know that well. ("Do you live in igloos?" "Do you have mobile phones?" Hmm... Nokia?) Nowadays I am also always sceptical of writers claiming they made research. One of them supposedly talked about "The Black Death" in Ancient Egypt... They may have had the plague but it wouldn't have been called that. Unfortunately Norwegians don't seem to be too active in GR, I would be interested in hearing what they think about it. Do they feel it's correct?

It is not just smaller countries, and people foreign to the country. I am from Idaho, USA. It is surprising to me that when I am asked where I am from (evidently I have a great Western accent) and I say Idaho, people will often comment, "Oh that is by Iowa, right?"

My brother once convinced some very silly Florida kids that Oklahoma/Kansas/Nebraska don't have running water or electricity yet and that it still looks exactly like it does in Little House on the Prairie.I really like seeking out either books by people who have lived in a particular area for some time before writing about it. An author visiting someplace on vacation for research is fine if the main character is a tourist also, but otherwise I like it better when the author has been a resident for awhile.

I'm having a difficult time with this list so far, as a lot of the novels cover multiple locations (many of them are uninhabited places that aren't countries at all) and many of the books overlap. For example, Farthest North starts out from Norway; the Norwegian ship Fram sails to reach the North Pole, gets stuck in the ice near Russia's Siberian Islands, and they take a sled dog team to Franz Joseph Land islands (trying to reach the North Pole) while the ship drifts on to Svalbard islands, then they all end up returning to Norway. So which country should I list it under?! Hmmm!

I just found an older news article written by a woman who tried to read one book from each of the world's countries in a single year. Here's her list of books. Maybe it'll inspire some of us! If you visit the main part of her blog, you can read her thoughts on the books she read - though she did her project in 2012 so you have to go back a little bit to see those entries.

Unless you read another book set in Norway, then .... the books play musical countries, and you bump it to Siberia :-). I mean, Russia. :-p

I enjoy reading her thoughts and experiences about the books. I've been looking for classics from The Maldives and I noticed that she also had some trouble finding a book.

Twelve! Mongolia, from The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom. Actually, that one was hard to pick a country, b/c it was ... a long walk :p ... through many of them. But, an extended period of time, and five of the 23 chapters were in Mongolia, particularly crossing the Gobi desert, so that seemed like a fair pick, for a country for this book.
