The String Theory Challenge - 2014
I'm desperate to re-read it as it's been a while since I first read it, so I thought it would be a great starting point :)
I will try for 5 books...please.Completed 5/5
✔1. The Hoard 1/11/14
A hoarders hoard has a life of its own...
This had me wondering about how hoarders become hoarders.
* * *
✔ 2. Stuff: Compulsive Hoarding and the Meaning of Things 2/19/14
A psychological insight on why hoarders are how they are.
The first chapter in this book talked about two brothers from Harlem that hoarded. Homer and Langley Collyer. I wanted to know more, but I couldn't find any non-fiction book about them, but I found a novel that was inspired by their lives.
* * *
✔ 3. Homer & Langley 2/21/14
Fictionalized account of the Collyer brothers (Hermits of Harlem).
These brothers kept tabs on the second world war. This made me wonder abot WWII. I came across this non-fiction book about a soldier who survived the horrors of WWII.
* * *
✔4. Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption 4/17/14
World War II story of survival.
From one war to the next. I came across a book of short stories that dealt with war (Vietnam) and the survival during and after.
* * *
✔5. The Things They Carried 5/3/14
Short stories that deal with the Vietnam War and the horrors experienced during and after.
THIS CONCLUDES THIS CHALLENGE
I'd like to sign up for twelve for this challenge. I often choose my next reads this way. It will be interesting to track that logic.
I really like this idea. Please put me down for 5. Going to start with Slaughterhouse-Five because I've been meaning to I read it since I read The Universe Versus Alex Woods.
Question...do I have to read all of the string books back to back? Or can I read some others in between?
It's not a back to back book challenge at all Alison. You can read as many books you want in between while trying to figure what book would link with the first (:I've added you Laura Jane and Kelsi!
I haven't yet decided what my first book will be for this, but I'm pretty sure it'll be nonfiction. Who has picked their first so far?
Starting with nonfiction is a great idea Kara! I'll start with Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers which is high on my to-read list and should inspire lots of off-shoots.
Good luck Christine!I don't think I'll start with nonfiction but it would be nice if one of books ended up being a non fiction read.
This sounds like an interesting way to pick books. I'd like to go with 4 books for this challenge.Updated: December 26th
(3/4)
(...talks about a blizzard in New York)
(the author's first day of work involves a blizzard in New York...)
(deals with a young woman starting a new career)
(deals with a young man starting a new career)
Kara wrote: "I haven't yet decided what my first book will be for this, but I'm pretty sure it'll be nonfiction. Who has picked their first so far?"Probably The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America!
Hi all!Sounds like a fun challenge. I'll start in January with this book: Quesadillas and see how it goes from there.
I'll go for a string of 10.
I'm in for 5 :) This sounds fun!THE STRING THEORY CHALLENGE

String Theory Challenge 6/12 Complete1. Me Before You- wow, this book wrecked me. So...next up, someone with a disability or someone working on him/herself, or making a life for themselves after a death...
2. The Bone Collector - another quadriplegic dealing with the devastations of lost function, but also dealing with crime scenes. I'd drifted away from crime novels but this has piqued my interest, so I will continue down that vein
3. The Coffin Dancer - another book in the series from the book above. Even more suspenseful than the first, but with a dash of crossed signals between two people who love each other. I'm in the mood for more of that, so heading that way with the next one.
4.Wings Coming from two different cultures at war with each other, the relationship between the two main characters struggled to reach common ground. The fantasy aspect, combined with that clash of cultures is interesting, so leads me to my next book
5. The Golem and the Jinni Fabulous book, with such an intriguing concept. Once again, fantasy and differing cultures combine for a fascinating story. I'm in the mood for more fantasy, so will seek that out in my next book.
6. Ghost Star Night another unusual fantasy, with an intriguing mixture of contemporary aspects juxtaposed with more traditional fantasy elements.

This challenge sounds interesting. Put me down for 6 please. I've just finished Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight and am keen to reread Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse.
Erika wrote: "I'll try for 5, please and thank you!"I have to put you under Erika Lynn because of the multiple Erika's in the group.
I've added everyone. Good luck!
This sounds like such a fun challenge and reminds me of the challenge my fiance and I have to help us get through our vast movie collection. I am in for 20.

frequent mentions of the Reign of Terror period
2)A Tale of Two Cities

My String
Hello! I finished the first book for this challenge: Quesadillas. So that's 1/10.There were so many themes in this book to go from. I'm sure I'll find a suitable second book soon.
I'm already participating in way too many challenges, but I can't resist this one! I'm going to start small with a goal of 4 and maybe raise it later in the year.
I'm going to join you guys. I'm not going to set a goal (if that's OK) - just going to see how many I can do.
Great start Diana S and An!Good luck Lianne and Kaitlin.
Kaitlin, it's fine if you don't set a goal.
I just wanted to add I found a follow up book for my challenge:1)Quesadillas: a book with a 13 year old Mexican protagonist
2) Het gym: a book with a 13 year old Dutch/Surinamian protagonist
Such fun.
