It is often difficult to tell if a book is appropriate without having it in front of us. The "coffee table book" rule applies to books that are primarily images with limited text. The SRC is a reading challenge. If you feel that your choice is a book that is read for its text then it would usually work.

Ty | 563 comments not a question but a suggestion for the future.

for the issue with genres disappearing and GR going willy-nilly, what about a simple caveat that if X number of users have shelved the book for whatever genre, then it qualifies. X being whatever the mods decide. Of course, this will not work for lesser known books, but one would hope the genres on the main page would work for those. It would cut down on the genre verification work for the mods and the frustration for the members. The members can even state "X number of users have shelved this as blah blah blah"

And no, GR has not settled down. I was just about to claim a task when a genre disappeared on my book. didn't get verification because it was #2 on the list. sigh.

Jenifer (jensamaha) | 355 comments Not sure where to put this question but I am reading the newest book by Dean Koontz called "Innocence". It came out on December 10 this year. I can't find it listed on Goodreads. Maybe someone else can have better luck at pulling it up?

Eepa *mm loving bookworm* (eepa) | 187 comments I have picked couple of books that are published only in Finnish. Either they are by Finnish author's or one is short story collection made only for Finnish market, so I can't give you link to the English version. Do you want explanation, maybe couple of sentences about the blurb, to understand what the book is about or what?

message 56: by Ty (new)

Ty | 563 comments book has to exist in GR database to be claimed for points. So even if it is in a different language, so long as there is a legit page, the book qualifies for the task, and you provide the task posting requirements, you should be able to claim it.

2. Books in languages other than English may be used. Please provide information on the book and/or title to your English speaking moderators so they can understand how the books fit the tasks. Any task requiring a specific title (number of letters, number of words, specific word in title, etc.) should apply to the title that you use.

Thank you so much, Jennifer. I don't know why I couldn't find it!

message 58: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (seussscat) | 17 comments Being new to the group, just joined today I have a question. As the challenge was December to February, am I allowed to use books I have just read in December in the tasks e.g. one of the tasks is to the read the first title in the series and I just read the colour of magic by Terry Pratchett which is the first in the series. Although I wasn't part of the group then, I did read the book in the challenge time so wondered if I could use it?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3045 comments You can claim any books you read in the month of December, January and February as long as they fit the tasks even if you joined late.

Thanks very much :) Glad to know my december reading is already going to earn me points.

Sharice George | 51 comments I'm having a hard time figuring out how to link the covers of books. I made a completed task post in which I linked to each book through Goodreads but they didn't link the cover. How do I link the cover like I see other people do?

Also task 20.9 requires the rolling of two dice. I have a four and a six. Does that mean when I finish that I claim 40 points or just 20 for the two?

After you do the search through the "add book/author" link, look down at the bottom - there's a button there for "cover."

And, I don't quite know what you mean by your second question - 20.9 is not a die roll task. All the 20 point tasks are one book tasks, and none of them in the winter challenge involve rolling dice. A task is never worth more than its face value - 5, 10, 15, etc.

message 63: by Aleksandra (new)

Aleksandra (aleksandrakonwa) | 752 comments What is minimum amount of pages to read for 15 points tasks (task 15.10)? I cannot find anywhere answer.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3045 comments The page minimum unless specified is 100 pages.

Deana (ablotial) | 276 comments Can I just be sure I have an understanding of the rules associated with graphic novels? And "childrens"?

Sequential art, manga, graphic novels, etc can be used for any 5, 10 or 15 point tasks without having to ask.

They can NOT be used for 20, 25, 30 or 50 point tasks UNLESS the task creator specifically says so, no matter how many pages it has.

So, I could use Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened for task 10.6 no problem, but not for 25.11 because the author didn't specifically say it was ok, although it is over 300 pages. Yes?

---

And then for "childrens" it is similar, but also has a page number requirement.

So "childrens" with 100-300 pages can be used for any 5, 10, 15 point task with no problem.

"childrens" with 300+ pages can be used for 20, 25, 30 point tasks no problem.

"childrens" with less than 300 pages cannot be used for 20, 25 and 30 point tasks UNLESS the task creator specifically says so.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3045 comments That sounds about right.

Deana (ablotial) | 276 comments Great thanks for confirming. I normally don't read those types of books but we have one of each for my book club this month and I didn't want to end up on the naughty list!

The bonus theme for Spring 2014 is Monopoly.

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 754 comments Miriam, it is better for the Moderators to post your tasks as you do the SRC rather than hold them to the last. I usually post 2, 3, or 4 tasks in one post.

Msg #76

Not all tasks are 1 book. The 5 and 10 point tasks are 1 book as is the 20 point tasks. Some of the 15 point tasks are 2 book tasks, while the rest are 1 book tasks. The 25 and 30 point tasks are all 2 book tasks. The 50.1 task is 3 books.

Miriam wrote: "Hi all! Newbie here! Am I supposed to note each task completed as I go or wait until the end of the period to submit all at once?"

NO! Bad idea to wait till the end of the challenge. It's a pain for the moderators and you run the risk that something is going to happen on the last night that will prevent you from posting, or that there will be problems with your post that you won't have time to fix.

You can post each time you finish a task, or wait until you've done a few, but please do not save them up until the end.

You need to read each task to see if it's a 1, 2, or 3 book task.

Please start by reading the basic intro material on the site. Getting Started and The Seasonal Reading Challenge Explained are good places to start.

Chris (chrismd) | 1237 comments Well here's a beaut. I wanted to use Jacqueline Winspear's Messenger of Truth for for 30.1 option 1 - object on cover shows something that can fit two people. The cover clearly shows a boat behind Maisie.
Messenger of Truth (Maisie Dobbs, #4) by Jacqueline Winspear
I listened to the audiobook, downloaded from Overdrive, and the Overdrive menu shows that cover. However, when you look at the audioversion cover on GR, they show what would appear on a CD cover, which is truncated to a square shape -- cutting off the boat!
Messenger of Truth (Maisie Dobbs, #4) by Jacqueline Winspear
Is it still usable?

I don't think I've seen any options for Overdrive or OneClick audio for any book on GR.

message 79: by Bea (new)

Bea Chris, does the ISBN on the audiobook match the one on GR? If not, your audiobook could be added as another edition. If yes, then your cover could be added as an alternate cover.

Chris, can you provide a reference link or a screenshot of the cover on your Overdrive menu?

message 81: by Chris (new)

Chris (chrismd) | 1237 comments OMG - the Overdrive cover is just a stretched version of the CD cover. Since it was longer, my brain just filled in the rest of the boat. You can see a screen grab that I uploaded to my profile here: Messenger of Truth
While I feel somewhat ripped off, there are lot of other places to slot this book. And something to keep in mind to watch for in the future.

Eepa *mm loving bookworm* (eepa) | 187 comments I have a question about paperbacks. I'm going to read Adel's Purr (ebook version) and the book page shows that there is paperback version but it's from the first edition from a different publisher and hence no longer available.

Does it still count? Can I use the paperback version as a base for tasks that requires page numbers even if I read different edition? I don't know if the story has changed as there is no info about that in the book page.

Yes, a paperback edition may be used to establish page numbers even if it is no longer available.
