I didn't like him in the second book because he was too cocky and aware of his attractiveness, but now we've found out it's a front and he was essentially a sex slave! I wanted to read more about the secrets he learned hahaha!

Thought we were gonna get a nice touching reunion between Katniss and Peeta and he put his hand round her throat. What???? (hide spoiler)]

I liked the way she went back to 12 and finding the rose, Snow is still watching. It seems she's gone from being one puppet to another. I didn't like the part about Cinna that did get to me. I though Haymitch was a bit tough when he asked why people liked Katniss but it made sense in the end. (hide spoiler)]

Snow's final talk setting the wheels in motion. I knew after what he said that katniss would do that. I really thought they would make her the president though. Finished - (view spoiler)[I was a little disappointed at the ending. It seemed to be really rushed and I thought Katniss would have a bigger part in the democratic side of things.

As I was getting nearer to the end, I was worrying that things still weren't looking like they were wrapping up so yeah, bit disappointed at the rushed pace.

Especially when Katniss says she's been imprisoned for a month and it's like a dozen paragraphs of her imprisonment and so much happens in the background in this time. I think maybe, instead of trying to get everything wrapped into nice little 27 chapters exactly, the author should have developed it more and it would be more satisfying.

Also, Finnick. Poor poor Finnick! He was becoming one of my favourite characters in the series, his arc in Mockingjay was the best, and he gets killed in a sentence and that's it. We don't get any reaction to his death, he doesn't get mentioned much after, he's just forgotten about and I'm so mad. Justice for Finnick! I think his death affected me more than Prim's. Both were unnecessary overall, but Finnick made more of an impression on me, especially like I say with his arc in this book.

First quarter - (view spoiler)[This was the slowest paced beginning of all the books, but I guess it had to be so as the focus has shifted more and more, throughout the series, to the politics. District 13 is set up to be just as brutal as the capitol, with their strict rules and their harsh treatment of Katniss' stylists for stealing bread. I can understand why they had to be this way though, to an extent. Their survival depended on it.

When Katniss made the infamous 'fire is catching and if we burn, you burn with us' speech outside the bombed hospital I had CHILLS! This series has some great goosebumps inducing moments! (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter - (view spoiler)[This is still reading far slower than I remembered. Action is happening, but a lot of the focus is on Katniss' internal struggles, early on. She is showing clear mental agitation, which is only to be expected after all she has gone through at such a young age.

Snow is still showing his contempt for Katniss and his wish to destruct her, by any means possible, by planting flowers after the attack on District 13 and then in making Peeta a mutt to do his bidding when he can't reach her. (hide spoiler)]

Third quarter - (view spoiler)[That Peeta decorated Finnick and Annie's cake was one of the first real indicators that the old Peeta was returning. It made me giggle how mean to him Katniss was. They have both suffered and I'm glad she didn't sugarcoat her meetings with him. It is refreshing to read a protagonist who isn't all sweetness and light, or all dark and brooding, she is confused and confusing and reads all the more authentic for it. (hide spoiler)]

Fourth quarter - (view spoiler)[This entire last quarter has RUINED ME. Poor Prim! I knew her death was coming and yet I still hated reading of it. It was ingenious of District 13 to frame Snow as the murderer of both the children and those who were attempting to heal them.

The ending was so bittersweet. I know not everyone loves it but it felt like the only authentic ending to the series, when both Peeta and Katniss had suffered through so much together. It wasn't perfection for them, but the book closed showing them receive some measure, at least, of a happy ever after. The return of Prim's cat was such a nice touch. (hide spoiler)]

It is the slowest book overall. You'd think with the war, there would be more action.

He went through so many awful things to protect Annie and just when he gets her back, he dies. And she goes on to have his child, which is good, but for me it makes it even sadder. Other than Katniss being alone, I don't know who she could have ended up with besides Peeta. They both struggle, even in the future with kids, but they did the best they could to move forward. This right here is a lot of my problem with this book. It's always been slow for me, but when I was younger I didn't appreciate how important seeing her mental struggles were. Now, I love seeing that!! But, that is so different from the other books that it through me off. I know we saw a bit in of it in Catching Fire, but this we don't just see Katniss' experience. We get everyone's.

I don't think Katniss ever cared for Peeta on that level. She cared for him, but not romantically? I think under all of the tension and events they went through that maybe that's what it was?
