Ok one question,

I'm a little confused that in chapter 9, during the time that they were in line waiting for lunch after class, the children spoke English perfectly. They talked about Ian and Sophie.

I thought they could speak English that well. Or maybe I was wrong :D

You are right. In that chapter Sophie helped a little girl (I think) with her math problem and she spoke in English. And the math explanations Sophie gave were very clear and difficult, if you didn't understand English.

yeah, it kinda confused me too. Remember when they first arrived the orphanage (chapter 7)? The kids didn't speak one word in English. I thought at first that maybe they were shy, but I just checked and they used their native language with her. Only one girl spoke English in that scene.

Yeah, but those were most likely the newer kids who most recently lost their parents. But the kids at the school, at least those particular ones, had been there longer. Right? Lol

Done! The last couple chapters left me (view spoiler)[ in tears, especially during the attack upon the orphanage and Karina's subsequent death. TEAR-JERKER!!! OMG!! I wasn't sure how the book would end, but Ian showing up in the courtroom I didn't expect. His mother telling him what happened seemed totally out of character for her, though, so that didn't seem believable to me. I was happy to see them marry, but wasn't she only 17? (hide spoiler)]

I was not convinced that out of the blue Ian's mother told him what she had done. It was just too unbelievable.

At one point I even thought that Ian was 16, but I realized that Sophie was just teasing him when they went to the bar. It threw me for a minute. LOL He was actually 22 though.

I was totally heartbroken, too, when (view spoiler)[ Karina died in Sophie's arms. I thought that was a test of faith because Sohpie prayed for her life. Charles, carrying his wife to their hut...OMG heartbreaking! (hide spoiler)]

Im pretty sure Sophie was 18-19 cause shes graduated highschool and mentions brief;y about post secondary schools.

as far as the kids- Ian said that most can speak decent english when she was asking what words were in their native language and the first day of class Ian asks the kids to speak in English to make Sophie comfortable so I got the impression that they understood it pretty well, but among themselves and the staff that knew their language they choose to speak it over english because its their culture. which makes sense to me. So when Ian came back with spohie the first time they were speaking their native language because he understands it and its comfortable for them

Chapters 23-26 (view spoiler)[ had me crying uncontrollably. For everyone to loose Karina, I can understand why the author did it, but damn did I go through a lot of Kleenex. (hide spoiler)]

I also think that Ian (view spoiler)[ Knew that something was up when Sophie just left like she did. He could probably see how heartbroken she was and after thinking figured out that something must have happened to make her go. Hes smart and knows his mom so probably asked her and from what I read about her she wouldn't have a problem telling him that she thought it was best for Sophie to go home. She did make it clear that she didnt like Sophie and that her campaign was very important. I do like that he came back- I was worried for a moment that she would go back to being vain to survive in that world again. (hide spoiler)]

I also like to the that the Epilogue happened maybe a year after we leave them. (view spoiler)[ That the got the orphanage up and running before they headed off to an island for a week or two :P (hide spoiler)]

Suzy, I see what you mean. And yes, I agree with you on the language part. It is the part that the kids used English talking to each other (fluently) that kinda threw me off track. I think it would have been more logical if they talked to their friends in their native tongue. But I understand why the author chose to do that.

Your explanaton on the part that why Abri told Ian about blackmailing Sophie makes sense. However, the author should have given us the explanation. Dropping that part made the book a little confusing for me and I still think it's the author's responsibilities to provide the readers the reasons why and how something happens in the story. I agree with you Gis. That's my only main issue with this book. I think there are a few points where she breezed over details that would have been nice to know. Like (view spoiler)[ Abri dropped the comment 'its Ian all over again' but then nothing was every explained and nothing ever came of it so why have it in the plot. Its a tid bit that gets us curious and then nothing. And she breezed over the first 2-3 weeks Sophie was at the orphanage and I would have liked to know about those first few weeks. (hide spoiler)]

Book two is about Spencer so the stories have to be somewhat related. Perhaps we will hear a mention of Sophie and Ian or maybe they will make a small cameo appearance. One can hope!!

Hmmm- maybe. I didn clue in that it might be Sophies Spencer in book 2- that'd be interesting if each book is about someone in the group of friends

True, it could be another Spencer. I don't think they mentioned his last name in this book. I just assumed it was Sophie's Spencer.

I finished today! I enjoyed it and can't wait to read the next book with everyone. I will add my thoughts and a review later. Busy work week....ugh.
