I was drawn in from the Prologue, but the first chapter made me feel like this will be a difficult read. Just as I thought, Sophie (covers up to chapter 8) (view spoiler)[got herself in trouble with the drugs. It's pretty disgusting (more sad actually) that she can allow herself to be so used by men. When she was caught doing a line by the cop, what a pig he was! He got a little piece and then turn her in anyway. I like her punishment. She is definitely going to be changed by working in the orphanage, especially one that is filled with deformed, yet happy kids AND workers (hide spoiler)]

Her parents: (view spoiler)[ I hate it when parents are like hers: negligent, emotionally detached, appearance-driven, and non-attentive. Her mother bugs me even more than her father. I guess because moms are generally nurturing and tender and typically understand their children. She is none of those so far. I do hope this changes by the end of the book, and somewhere along the line I hope they realize that they created the Sophie that their daughter is. (hide spoiler)]

I hate Spencer's dad :( I'm in chapter 7

Im in chapter 16 and really liking the book but I seem to disagree with Gisbelle, Vicki and Mandainn. Other than spencers Dad- hate him!

Chapter 1-8 I saw the first 8 chapters as believable. (view spoiler)[ A young person, especially a young woman raised in the way she was is being bread to behave exactly how she behaves. Im not condoning they way she treats people or behaves but I can definatly understand it. Comming from a neglectful background I can understand her want for attention, control and a sense of power over her surroundings and I liked taking multiple chapters to see how she has learned to put up defenses, manipulate others and take advantage of the guys around her to get satisfaction. I dont think that She gets used by the men in her life any more than she uses them. the cop was only going to arrest her, and she pushed it to try to get off- taking advantage of the fact that she knew she could exploit his base instincts to try to get what she wants. I have more issues with later chapters and sohpie's change. (view spoiler)[ For me changes that Sophie goes through happen too fast. I get that alot of people would have hated reading about her complaining for a few chapters about feeling lost, and finding it hard to adjust- but that would have come across more real than the glance overs we got before the extreme event (village attack) that really would have caused the change I saw in her. I would have liked to see the slow adjustments and changes over the ' a week had passed ....', 'Another week later... (hide spoiler)]

Over all I dont want to put the book down to see if it ends how I think its going to end. Im kind of wondering how cliche its going to be

Suzy, I don't know that we disagree. I do think that (view spoiler)[ men use her. Yes, she uses them as well, but I still feel like men prey on her vulnerabilities. Sort of like prostitutes. Most people know that most women have come from abusive homes and many have been molested, and while these women use the men for money, I still think the men take advantage of their vulnerabilities. They just add fuel to the fire. I also did state in the "her parents" spoiler that her parents "created the Sophie" she is. So I do understand WHY she is looking for that attention, which is why I said it's sad.

Also regarding the changes she's made, I do agree that the changes are coming very quickly; however, having family that have been to Haiti on mission trips, they ARE changed very quickly due to the extreme differences and a life style one cannot imagine without being in it. So they changes she is making might be genuine. I'm not as far as you are. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 10-11 were very (view spoiler)[ disturbing! Such atrocities are happening around the world. Vicious attacks on the parents and leaving so many children parentless is more than cruel. (hide spoiler)]

This book does remind me where a girl named Kei grew up in Uganda and without "things." She meets Cab, (view spoiler)[ a movie star, and they go to Uganda together which changes his way of thinking pretty fast too. It was spiritually uplifting and Kei was a woman of faith. (hide spoiler)]

If we do end up disagreeing, that's okay too. :o

I found chapter 11 very sad and disturbing but I didn't cry. I wonder if it has something to do with the generation I've grown up in. I've watched numerous documentaries about the savagery in the world and I am always horrified of the things humans are capable of but for me its just another part of life that I've seen many times before. I worry that generations after me will continue to be desensitized.

What was more emotional for me is chapters 16-18 when Sophie (view spoiler)[ is coming to grips with the fact that she is happy- possibly for the first time since her early childhood and how she struggles to accept the love of Pembroke and the new array of emotions she's having. Coming from a neglectful and abusive background I can relate to how nerve-wracking and terrifying it is to have people break into the carefully constructed barriers and walls you've put up to protect yourself. I am SURE he got some girl pregnant, but what happened afterward is another story. That was too in-your-face for Sophie not to wonder/ask. Can you imagine being able to offer someone an island!??
