The House of Hades
discussion
NICO… YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT O.o

So I'm reading the comments from 11-1 and I'm just 'bout 110% done with your comments. I go to a school that is accepting of everyone and you, my friend are pushing all my buttons.

I'll shut up before I embarrass myself further.

They're for everyone."
Well the age average on these are really ..."
And 8-12 year olds observe heteronormative relationships all the time. The attitude that they shouldn't observe homosexual relationships implies that homosexuality is inherently wrong, or taboo, or perverse, and that attitude in and of itself is wrong.
What do you mean you trusted him? You trusted him not to put homosexuals in the book or what? He put it there for the sake of other people. You need to realize that. Seriously, people! What's the difference between putting a heterosexual in the book and putting a homosexual? It's the same. There's incest. I don't see people complaining. One gay guy and everyone wants to go against Rick. Calm down. If you're not going to finish the books, fine. It's your loss.

The problem is, he's a mortal. I just can't live with that.

awww, poor you. too bad everyone else is mortal....

*sighs*

A regular human, created in God's image. I know it's a fantasy world but fantasy or not I can't have it.

You don't learn anything if you only read things that you absolutely agree with. To be a complete person, you need to encounter things you don't like. It's the way life works. So maybe you read this, and you don't like that Nico had a crush on Percy. Why should that stop you from enjoying the rest of the book? Why should that stop you from finishing the series, or trusting the author? I mean, Orsen Scott Card is anti-homosexual, but there's no denying that Ender's Game is a fantastic book and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. By that same turn, Riordan is supportive of all types of people. It doesn't change that fact that he writes amazing stories.
And just to keep this in the right perspective...
Today you're sitting here saying "I don't like gay characters in my books."
Only a few decades ago, people would have read Hazel or Piper or Leo's characters (or even the Kane sibs) and said "I don't like colored characters in my books."
Think about that.

I didn't get to actually try to find out like everyone else 'cause a stupid friend of mine had to SPOIL it for me :( It still was a surprise though
If there's one thing I hate the most, it's surprises. Even if it's good because I like to find out myself. But I kinda expected her to spoil everything from the HoH because she's always spoiling stuff for me. She spoiled the Leo and Calypso moment and Bob and Damasen dying and, worst of all, Nico's beautiful moment :(
That's actually the book I'm going to read with my class as a class book. We haven't actually started it yet but we're going to, soon. Don't spoil xDD
Is it really good? All I know is that it takes places during ww2, I think..? And some girl steals books. Watch the ending be surprising. I can't wait !
You're making sound awesome. Now I feel like buying it and reading it without my class. My friend (the spoiler girl) probably already read it and can't wait to spoil it for me. They better get the movie right, I hate it when they make a completely different movie and just put the name of the book on it -__-cough*thelightningthief*cough. My school will most likely arrange a trip for my class to watch the movie. I hope it's good !
I hate it when they do that. It's like making a entirely different movie and just putting the name of the book there.

I respect your opinion on this topic, but I will ask you to do the same to others.

Reading about a gay character won't make your son/daughter gay, it will just acclimatize them to the reality that they will most likely someday meet a homosexual in real life. Shocking, I know.

And i am totally affected on his previous behaviors because i know he's hurt. But I really didnt see it coming. That you know, he's gay. I literally cried. I think i'm over reacting but NICOOOOOO. :( huhuh, I dont know what to say.
My friends and family thinks i'm delusional because of books. I cant get over it. Nothing changed, I still love nico. I love him. Superrrr. But I'm so hurt the way he liked percy and him being killed within himself because of fear of no one will accept him or jealousy or pride. I really care about him. :(
At least Uncle rick gave us a good ending in HoH. Maybe he's guilty on what he did on MoA. lol
*sigh* It's so hard to accept that I am unfortunately inlove with a fictitious character. I really really love Nico di Angelo. No matter what i will still love him. i'm starting to go nuts by this
(OKAY IM LOOSING IT UNCLE RICK. THIS IS YOUR FAULT. HAHAHAHA)

Excuse me? This comment is disgusting! Where do you live - 19th century? It's the year 2013, and I'm absolutely supporting gay/lesbian rights. They're still human beings, as you should know. One of my friends is openly gay and he's such a nice guy, always there when I have a problem. If you'll start fussing about different ethnical groups, too, you might get yourself into huge trouble with me! We are the way we are, we can't change it, and that's a good thing. Sexual orientation is nothing you can choose, and being gay or lesbian or bisexual or whatever there is is no sickness or disorder at all! Think about that. You may think what you want, but don't shout everything from the rooftops, it might get you into serious trouble!
Jαṡṃïṉε wrote: "Not reading the last book because of Nico's little "episode". This is inappropriate, and I will have nothing to do with an author who supports gay rights. This is violating, and horrifying."
I agree with you! I have no idea why Rick Riordan would write something like that in a book that many younger children read!
I agree with you! I have no idea why Rick Riordan would write something like that in a book that many younger children read!
If you have no idea why, you could try reading the earlier comments about that topic because I don't feel like going into this whole matter again.

I don't think you're 9

*sigh* again?
Reason 1: Rick Riordan writes for children who feel outcast and bullied, children with ADHD, dyslexia, who are mixed race or homosexual. He writes to show children they can be accepted, no matter who they are. He doesn't write for the bigots who do the bullying.
Reason 2: Rick Riordan writes about G
Greek/Roman mythology, which features bestiality, incest, murder, rape and a bunch of other questionable material. These books already feature heterosexual relationships, innocent though they are. If that's appropriate for children, then so is homosexuality.
Reason 3: It's in Nico's character. To write him any other way would be a disservice to Rick Riordan's character.
Reason 4: It gives us answers to questions we had about Nico's character behaviours and actions in the past. It's called character development, all good writers do it.
Do I need to continue?

Q. How did you decide on Nico's character development in House of Hades? (SPOILER)
A. Here's my statement concerning Nico in The House of Hades:
One of the most important reasons I became a teacher was to advocate for marginalized children – those who are bullied or misunderstood, those who feel lost and alone. As a middle school student myself, I certainly felt that anguish. As a middle school teacher, it was critical to me that all my students saw my classroom as a safe, supportive environment where they could be honored for who they were and express themselves without fear.
I’ve taken the same approach with my writing. It’s essential to me that young readers find a variety of relatable, positive role models in my books. Every child can be a hero. No child should be shamed or shunned for being different.
Nico’s sexual orientation became clear to me the longer I wrote about his character. It was not something I planned. I had no agenda. But when I realized this was a major part of his life experience and the reason for so many of his difficulties with the other characters, it would have been a disservice to his character, the plot of the books, and all my readers simply to sweep the issue under the rug and pretend it didn’t exist. Turning a blind eye to children’s needs is never an acceptable answer.
I’ve been lucky enough to teach all sorts of students – fifth grade to twelfth grade, rich and poor, from numerous ethnic backgrounds, with diverse religious traditions and a variety of learning differences. I’ve also taught gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students. Some self-identified as early as elementary school. Some came to terms with their sexual orientation later in high school. Most had a hard time during the middle grades, which are tough years for any child. All my middle school students enriched my classroom. They made me a better teacher and a better writer for children, and they all deserve my support.
I am committed to writing appropriate books for the middle grades. This means no bad language, no gratuitous or explicit violence, and no sexual content beyond what you might find in a PG-rated movie – expressions of who likes whom, holding hands, and perhaps the occasional kiss. The idea that we should treat sexual orientation itself as an adults-only topic, however, is absurd. Non-heterosexual children exist. To pretend they do not, to fail to recognize that they have needs for support and validation like any child, would be bad teaching, bad writing, and bad citizenship.
Having said that, a good book, like a good classroom, should raise questions, not insist on a particular set of answers. It certainly should not ignore difficult questions. Whatever a family’s moral and religious beliefs on the topic of sexual orientation, I hope The House of Hades will provide an opportunity for parents to talk to their kids about what they believe, and why they believe it. Most importantly, I hope the story continues to entertain and keeps kids reading!

Exactly. I think the people who were bullied a lot are the ones who understand Ricks message. And the bullies are the ones who don't.

So hurting people and saying mean things isn't bullying any more? Instead telling people who are saying hurtful and mean things that they're wrong is bullying? Last time I checked that was called standing up for yourself and others.
And everybody can say what they like here. But it's a forum, and that means when you post something people can read it and reply to it however they want. It's for discussions.
Because Caitlyn, your opinion hurts other people. You ARE the bully here. What you say makes other people feel horrible about themselves. You make them feel like they don't belong, even if it is your opinion. That's called bullying.

It's not like we're saying you're unnatural, an abomination, disgusting, sick, going to hell, perverted etc or that you should do what we say or you're wrong and nasty and shouldn't exist etc. We're not the ones saying those types of things.
That's the difference between bullying and sticking up for the victims of bullying.
