The Time of the Hero by Mario Vargas Llosa of Peru. 4 stars for me. Original title in Spanish: La Ciudad y los Perros (The City and the Dogs- "the dogs" refers to a group of boys at a military academy). I was reading this concurrently with the last book I posted.

Wow! What a great read. Recommended for people who enjoy big stories like Gravity's Rainbow and Vanity Fair. This may send me off to look for more of the big books om the list! I will certainly be reading more Rushdie!

A quick, warm and pleasant read filled with a subtle British humour which although it didn't actually make me laugh out loud, I did read it with a smile but like all the best comedy, the book's tragedy rings true with a much wider audience that still resonates today.

Like you, I probably wouldn't have chosen this book myself, but I did find it fascinating and hard to put down (I listened to the audiobook). It is supposed to be semi-autobiographical and I found his service in World War I and in the French colony quite interesting. The galley slave section was a little unbelievable. His view of America was intriguing. His career as a doctor and at the clinic seemed the most realistic. Overall I enjoyed it.
