The Bitter Glass by Eilís Dillon
Quite enthralling story set during the Irish Civil War and with only 51 ratings as of 2/26/2022.

Have you read The Passion yet? That is far and away my favorite by her. I highly recommend it.

I'm not sure why it is so obscure. It is even on KindleUnimited. I enjoyed it, too.

I have not but it looks interesting.

The Passion is number three on my to-reads list, so I'm looking forward to it. I've only read her Written on the Body before.

The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach. I had no idea what to expect here. I liked it.

The Daughter by Pavlos Matesis.

Strangely organized and written with a conversational tone that is very odd too. It was ok.

Billy Budd, Sailor by Herman Melville. 4 stars. A poignant story thankfully much shorter than his Moby Dick. Some readers may not care for the extravagant vocabulary (keep a dictionary at hand or read on a Kindle).

Kathleen | 63 comments The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky

Did they really remove it from the list? Do you still count it here for challenges?

It's a monster, but in the end it completely won me over.

It's a monster. But it's a good one!

Yes it still counts for the challenges. Almost always (unless we are talking about books added, removed, changes from edition to edition) when we talk about the LIST we are talking about the combined list. 1318 books.

Journey to the Center of the Earth by Journey to the Center of the Earth. I seem to be making 2022 the year of the adventure. This one was entertaining, and highly unbelievable. But in an entertaining way.

Yay! Thanks for clarifying, Sean.

Peter | 443 comments The Water Babies by Charles Kingsley

This book is undoubtedly an important piece of social history but it's also an uncomfortable read. I personally would never recommend it being read to youngsters, hence the lowly mark.

The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway. As I was reading I was very ho hum about this book, but after I was finished and I thought about it as a whole I rather liked it.

message 8331: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 63 comments I finished The Sun Also Rises too, and also had a mixed reaction--liked the style, not the story so much.

Bob Kaufman (bobkaufman) | 688 comments The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. I did not like the first half of the book because I detested the father, Nathan. I began to like the book during the fourth section after he was mostly out of the picture.

The Waves by Virginia Woolf. Not sure I can put into words why I liked this book so much. Beautiful descriptions of everything from the physical to the metaphysical. Perfect organization and a unique style.

Bob Kaufman (bobkaufman) | 688 comments Max Havelaar, or the Coffee Auctions of the Dutch Trading Company by Multatuli. A serious indictment of colonialism but told, at times, with humour.
