Genre ★★★ - Not a lot of the sport/competition action, but there was enough that it wasn't just a backstory for the H, it was part of the story.
Romance ★★★★ - Good conflict but not prolonged, they earned their HEA. Their demons didn't just go away because they were in love but being together will help them work through them. I like this kind of HEA.

-- 08.12 ★★★ (Would be 4 if I wasn't blending the genre rating with the romance rating)
Genre ★★ - The child in the story was the 2 year old son of the widowed heroine and was used more as back story for the h and to establish the strength in her character - young(ish) woman widowed a week after the baby is born and she raises the child on her own for 2 years in Chicago before moving back home to have a better support system for her and the child - the support in this case coming from the family of her husband. So as set up for the story line, it worked well but the child played little, if any, part of the actual story. He was included in a few scenes but as a character of his own, he was not really relevant.
Romance ★★★★ - I loved the romance and the conflict. H and h reconnect after she moves back and there is lots of guilt on his part because her dead husband was not just his best friend, but H had always been in love with her. For her part, she had to move beyond the aftermath of her not-so-perfect marriage. There was also a secondary romance which took up almost as much book space as the main - but it was't intrusive and was believable on it's own as well. As a romance, I really liked this book!
✔YA: How to Seduce a Band Geek - Cassie Mae

Genre ★★★★★ - this was definitely a book right smack dab within the middle of the genre for YA - it was about high school aged kids and the emotions and sexuality were appropriate for high school aged kids. I never felt as if I was reading about 20 somethings placed in a high school setting. This is what I'd want my high school (or even middle school) aged kids to read. It was sweet and angsty but it was not overwhelmingly so. I purposely chose a YA book where I had a pretty good idea that it would not be dark and overpowering in the drama area, so I may have stacked the deck a bit. However, this book did deal with some serious teenage issues - there was a drug party scene and there was bullying but they were handled well. These things do go on in high school and should be addressed, but they did not make the book dark and depressing. I felt good after reading it!
Romance ★★★★ - i really enjoyed this book for many of the reasons stated above. They have their HEA (or HFN since they ARE in HS) and I believed in it 100%. They had external conflict which actually caused internal conflict but they were able to overcome them together - what I really liked was that the external conflicts didn't disappear, but by being together, they are able to help each other through their issues. This to me is the best - I don't always agree with the HEA in books where the admission of loving each other or to be together suddenly solves all the problems one or the other is having. This book didn't do that which is why it's a 4 star for me.
✔LGBT: The Current Between Us - Kindle Alexander

Genre ★★★ - I don't usually read this category, have actually only ever read one other book in the genre, so I'm not sure how well I qualify to judge how this book fits the genre. But regardless of whether I like M/M romance, a book is either about same gender romance or it isn't and this was definitely a M/M romance, including several sex scenes that were steamy. That tells me it fit the category but I'm not convinced this story couldn't also be told as M/F romance with minimal changes, hence the 3 stars instead of 4 or 5. The MCs being gay was handled well and believably but, like I said, this could have been a hetero romance except for one of the MCs was a male. Maybe that's normal in the genre? I don't really know the answer to that but I'm guessing the best LGBT books don't leave you feeling like the MCs could have interchangable genders.
Romance ★★★★ - I liked this story a lot. It had a nice twist towards the end that I was only expecting because of another review I read. I was expecting a twist but it wasn't the twist I thought it would be as I was reading, so that ups the rating right there for me from 3 to 4 stars. The romance was believable, the characters were strong and while it was a fairly predictable trope (rich, player H falling instantly for the more innocent, less sophisticated H, or h, who can't believe this H would actually fall for someone like him, or her) I enjoyed how it played out, and then there was the twist. Again, all predictably resolved but still held my attention and had me rooting for the couple.
✔western: Texas Danger: The Marshalls - Jean Brashear

Genre ★★ - this book was partially set in Texas and on a working ranch but was really more romantic suspense than western. The H was a rancher and his characterization as well as the parts that were set on the ranch were what I'd expect for the genre but the true focus of the book was on the suspense plot (besides the romance, of course).
Romance ★★★ - I've read most of this series/sub-series and have enjoyed them all but have not luuuuurved them. They are good reading but nothing I'd re-read and if the author continues to add to the series, I doubt I'd fall all over myself to get them. Regardless, the romance was sweet, there were sexy times (really only one full scene) and I believed in the HEA. I thought there was more telling than showing when it came to the h trying to 'figure out a solution' to her problems herself - this was repeated often but the h never really DID anything. I will say though that I liked how she fought back when she was captured - she didn't just sit and cry and whine. She fought and actually tried to escape her bindings herself. There was some growth to the characters but internal conflict wasn't really the focus of the book - their conflict was mostly external and was happily and believably resolved. It was a solid 3 stars.
