Joy (crowgirl) I'm most of the way through Blood Memories which is so different from the Nobel Dead series by Barb Hendee. This is UF and the Vampires are much more believable than the 'super' creatures presented in many books. Its a small book and easy read. If you want the vampire romance/sex stuff you won't like this book but it has good character development.

Glad you loved Wolf Moon. I started Howling at the Moon (Karen MacInerney) because someone raved about her writing. I was torn I have been wanting to check out the Black Dagger Brotherhood so I checked out the Lover Avenged audio book at the library... OMG I HATE the narrator's voice it's ruining the book. I think i might actually like the story but I am so distracted by the terrible narration I can't tell. I don't listen to audio's too much so i don't know if this is a common problem or if I am just too picky.

I read that earlier this year and quite enjoyed it. I believe the sequel is due out in October or November.

I had the same problem when I tried to listen to one of MaryJanice Davidson's Undead books. It was torture listening to this woman trying to do the characters' voices. It almost tainted the entire series for me! Brrrrr.

I liked the first book better than the second book. I am on the 3rd book and I'm loving it. But if you weren't thrilled with the 1st book then I wouldn't recommend the rest of the series. I am really enjoying the whole series so far.

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 113 comments Dora wrote: "Has anybody read the Nocturne City series by Caitlin Kittredge? I am on the 3rd book, and really loving the series."

I've read them all and I enjoy them. Luna's need to sabotage her relationships drives me batty at times, but the books are entertaining. I recommend Street Magic, the first book in her Black London series - a strong first novel which has left me eagerly anticipating the next installment.

I Know what you mean about Luna....drives me nuts! But you can't help but love her kick ass ways.

When I'm done with this series I plan on reading the Black London series. Which series do you like better?

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 113 comments Hmm... I think the Black London series has the potential to be the stronger of the two, but we'll have to wait and see as she's had four books to develop Luna's character. Pete and Jack are very compelling characters though, so it will be interesting to see where she goes with it.

message 461: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) I finished the 4th Vampire Diaries book, the best one so far, IMHO. Am also almost finished with a mystery from a favorite series of mine, You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Kills You A Rat Pack Mystery. Trying to decide what to pick up after it.

message 462: by Anne (new)

Anne Finished Mean Streets, The Colour of Magic, and Dead Over Heels this weekend. I'm starting Succubus Dreams or Hunted next. Not sure which one.

message 463: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 169 comments I just finally got current on all teh Kitty Norville books. Glad I gave them another shot. The first book was mediocre at best, but the remaining books were very good. I feel like this series is due for a true ending though.

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 179 comments Anne, thoughts on The Color of Magic?

message 465: by Candace (new)

Candace | 3 comments I took a small hiatus from urban fantasy and read a ton of JD Robb's mysteries, then I read "My Soul to Take," a young adult urban fantasy by Rachel Vincent, which was excellent. Tomorrow I go back to school and I am HOPING that I will have energy after the 6 hour drive to finally finally finally get to Fire Study.

message 466: by Lynda (new)

Lynda Finished rereading Kitty Takes A Holiday and am going to begin Kitty and the Silver Bullet.

Anne Michelle M. wrote: "Anne, thoughts on The Color of Magic?"

I wasn't crazy about it, but everyone seems to love them so much that I'm going to give the next book a try. It took me two days to read it, because even though it was such a short book, I kept putting it down and finding something else to read. I can usually fly through a book that size, but I think I just got bogged down with all of the crazy (but cool) descriptions of the world. I hate to admit it *blush*, but I was having to read some of the sentences two and three times before I could figure out what the heck he was saying! I'm going to try the next one and see if I like it any better.

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 179 comments Anne: I sort of expected that, which is why I stuck with suggesting Going Postal or one of the Sam Vimes books. More accessible.

message 469: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) I took a break from all thinks supernatural and read What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day for a book club. Not my usual kind of read by any means but it was okay. HATED the ending though.
Haven't figured out what I want to read now...

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Michelle M. wrote: "Anne: I sort of expected that, which is why I stuck with suggesting Going Postal or one of the Sam Vimes books. More accessible."

The Rincewind books have always been my least favorite in the series, and I'm really glad I didn't start with The Color of Magic or The Light Fantastic. (The ones with him and the rest of the Wizards are better, though.) Actually, when I picked up my first Discworld novel I didn't know it was a series, and had picked up Wyrd Sisters - being a theater major, the references to "the Scottish play" totally hooked me.

I do think that particular characters arcs should be read in order, if you can - the Witches, Death, the City Guard. Outside of that, tho, it's kind of fair game, and they don't really need to be read in order - it's just weird to go back and read an earlier book, like Equal Rites after reading other Witch books where Granny Weatherwax is much more fleshed out. It's odd to see the development in reverse.

Anyway, the Wiki article on Discworld has a handy little table in which you can sort books by release date, or by characters, so you can find the specific mini-arcs pretty handily that way.

message 474: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 179 comments blackrose, I like Rincewind, but I always knew he wouldn't be everyone's favorite. I've given Going Postal to a lot of people and they've loved it, so I stick with recommending that!

Have you read any Tiffany Aching? I read the first and was pleasantly surprised!

I can't wait for the new one, Unseen Academicals. Next month!

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 113 comments I'm with you, Michelle, in that I loved Rincewind (I still laugh at how long it took me to get "economics"). I must admit to having skipped any books with the Wyrd Sisters, as my husband swears they're rubbish. LOL Vimes, Carrot and crew are probably my favorites though. I love Pratchett though - the man's a genius! =)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) I haven't read of the the Aching stuff, or the Johnny stuff, or any of his kids/YA stuff. I do want to read them eventually, though, just haven't gotten around to it.

Am looking forward to Unseen Academicals, though. I love the Librarian.

message 478: by Theresa (new)

Theresa (tsorrels) I'm currently reading Dayhunter by Jocelynn Drake... it had been awhile since I read the first book so I was a little rusty on the details. The author does a nice job of gently reminding you of the details instead of slamming you over the head with the back-story like some authors. :)

After I finish this one, I'm going to be reading Magic to the Bone by Devon Monk since I have it out from the library.

message 479: by Julia (new)

Julia | 615 comments It's been awhile since I've been here.

I didn't finish Zodiac by Neal Stephenson. The narrator was driving me crazy, and a bunch of books came from the library, PBS and elsewhere.

I read Ellen Hopkins Identical a YA novel told in verse, while not UF -- exactly-- it is *very* good.

Are You Alone on Purpose? by Nancy Werlin is also YA and while not amazing *and* UF like her new-ish Impossible, this debut novel is pretty good.

Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay is historical and contemporary fiction with a narrator in 1942 and another in 2002 in Paris. It's good.

Now I'm reading and really enjoying Tanya Huff's The Enchantment Emporium. I've read her Blood & Smoke books about Henry Fitzroy, he's a vampire in Toronto & Vancouver and the illegitimate son of Henry VIII. I've read her older Valor books which are military science fiction about the NCO Sergeant Tobin Kerr and the men she leads. I've read the 4 Quarters books which are high fantasy. I have one or more of the Summoning Books, but it's not the first in the series, so I haven't read it yet. But I did not find The Enchantment Emporium confusing, because I have read other books with families who strive to keep the family business (in this case magic) in the family.

The Enchantment Emporium by Tanya Huff

message 480: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany | 19 comments I haven't had the time to really read as much as I want lately, what with working, babysitting, and trying to finish a blanket cross stitch for one of my friends before her baby shower. But I did finally finish The Mage's Daughter by Lynn Kurland. It was really good but very heavy on the romance and the plot didn't advance (to me) very much. I'm taking a break from romance before I start the last book in the trilogy and started on Gil's All Fright Diner. So far, so good. I almost started giggling when I read about the zombie cows but I had to stop myself because I was at the park and there were too many people around. The Mage's Daughter (Nine Kingdoms, Book 2) by Lynn Kurland Gil's All Fright Diner by A. Lee Martinez

message 487: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 179 comments I didn't like Showalter's story in Mysteria Lane. The others weren't too bad though. The Discipline Fairy in the last story is pretty amusing! And even a so-so MJD is still funny.

message 488: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret | 233 comments I've gotten a chance to start Hunting Ground in September after all, but I may not finish it this month.
I've just started it. I really like the characterization so far.

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but MJD's story was my least favorite. Normally, I lovelovelove her! Showalter's story has been the most interesting to me. I haven't quite finished up with the Discipline Fairy, but I really like it so far.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) I'm currently reading Extraordinary Engines The Definitive Steampunk Anthology, but it's only so-so, and since it's a collection of short stories I don't feel as obligated to read it in one go as I do with most books, so I think I'm gonna finally start Dead Until Dark, which a co-worker lent to me weeks ago.

Jessica | 169 comments I've got 2 anthologies in my reading pile: Unbound & Winter Moon. I also plan to re-read Storm Front this week in time for group read.
