Dale Harcombe | 1953 comments Just read Victim of Grace: When God's Goodness Prevails which spoke to me on so many levels.
This morning started reading Lila by Marilynne Robinson which I bought yesterday with a book voucher given me by a friend. Can't wait to get back to it. Life does interfere with reading time.

Oh great! Glad to see you liked it so much. I have it. I started to read this a while back. Definitely be moving it back to the top of the list now.

message 4357: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I read Stephen King's new short story A Death which was a pretty good horror western short story at the New Yorker magazine website and Falling Sky which was a pretty good steam-punk zombie dystopian story.

GeneralTHC I just finished a Michael Koryta book:The Ridge. It was actually a pretty good read. I would recommend this one to people who like horror of the type Koontz has written. I gave it 4-stars.

Chrissie I have completed Benjamin Franklin's Bastard: A Novel. I started out not liking it, but it turned around for me. It is like two different books the first and second half.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)

I have just finished Irresistible by Karen Robards, and was sorely disappointed. It's second in a trilogy I have been reading, and I was really NOT a fan of this "heroine". I couldn't stand her. All she did was complain and whine and feel faint. I started Shameless the other day, and it is SO much better! Finally, a heroine with backbone!

Hi Maggie - if you want a heroine with a back bone, try the In Death Series by J.D. Robb. Eve Dallas is the protagonist in the series and she is definitely NOT a whiner. It's my favorite series, I have them all.

I'm glad you enjoyed this book. I read this about a week ago and loved it.

Chrissie Julia, I couldn't give it as many stars as you but I did enjoy the book. I felt he was a bit fixated on his measurements, more of a scientist than a poet!

Yes, I'm sure I will, but I will read Home first, as I already have that on my bookshelf. Does the order matter much?

message 4373: by dely (new)

dely | 5214 comments I have finished reading Un'isola di mistero : seguito delle avventure di viaggio di Dalle caverne e dalle giungle dell'Indostan. I couldn't find the English edition but it's the sequel of From the Caves and Jungles of Hindostan by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky

Though it was short, it was an interesting read about what the author has seen during his journey in India at the end of the XIX century. I'm only sorry that I've read it in fits and starts because I've been again very busy. I'm sure I would have liked it much more if I had time to sit down and read it calmly.

If someone is interested I've written a short review, first Italian then English: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I don't suggest it to your daughter if she doesn't know anything about India! This is also a dated book, you will find sacrifices to the goddess Kalì, you will read about Thugs and Rajas and they aren't anymore; in that period it was still possible to find real gurus and sadhus (now a lot of them are fake only to swindle people).

If she doesn't know anything about the wide culture of India then it would be better she starts with some book that talks in a general way. It would be also interesting to read about all the symbolism behind the Hindu Gods so if she visits temples she can understand the meaning of a lot of things. Also Hindu myths are very interesting. Both myths and symbolism, but also the philosophical system of Hinduism, are also helpful to understand the mentality of the people though don't forget that India is a modern country. Sometimes we Western forget it and imagine India like a country where people practice yoga every day and still follow the non-violence of Gandhi.

How old is your daughter? Will she go to study or to work?

Book Ninja | 213 comments Finished reading The Golem and the Jinni. I gave it three stars. I don't know why something is holding me back from giving it a four star and I can't point out that thing. It was a good read. The basic plot of the story is interesting and I liked how the story shaped itself. But you know when the story is beautiful and the wording is beautiful too and the reader is lost in the words. I think that was missing from it. There is nothing wrong with her writing, but it doesn't amaze me as I thought it would.

It's always difficult when a book doesn't stun you but you can't quite put your finger on why it doesn't. I personally loved the book and am looking forward to reading the sequel

I love reading books set in countries I'm visiting or planning to visit. I think it makes it all the more exciting to read them before and then brings back wonderful memories if you read it afterwards

message 4381: by Chrissie (last edited Mar 08, 2015 06:55AM) (new)

Chrissie I completed Tigers Wedding, and it is definitely worth reading. I do not understand why nobody at all seems to know of this book. Don't read it to discover about an actress' life. The real focus is completely different. It is about life in Kerala, India, and the life of a Raj child.

Caroline Shepard (goodreadscomcarolineshepard) | 2 comments I've just finished reading I'm Your Man:The Life of Leonard Cohen by I'm Your Man: The Life of Leonard Cohenby Silvie Simmons. It's a bit uneven, like Leonard's life, and there's way too much about recording sessions. All in all though, a fascinating read about a most remarkable creator.

message 4383: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Angela, so you liked that one too!

message 4384: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Chrissie, I did ! I have always enjoyed Tyler's books and as you pointed out in your review - what family is not dysfunctional at some point in their history .

message 4385: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Exactly!

message 4386: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ I think that is why so many can relate to her books, there is always something of all of us that make her stories believable.

message 4387: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Diane , yes and it's usually the things that we don't want to admit or see in ourselves just as this family didn't see these things about themselves .

message 4388: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Tyler's dialogs are usually good too. Genuine from start to finish.

message 4394: by Colleen (new)
