I agree, Chrissie. Perso..."

:0) It it this that is the problem in choosing books; one never knows if the writing will will stirke a chord.

Leslie | 16369 comments I continue to enjoy my journey through Michael Innes' mysteries, this time with Picture of Guilt (the American title of A Family Affair). No murder but art theft mixed up with practical jokes.

And I found the play The Physicists by Swiss playwright Friedrich Dürrenmatt funny & thought-provoking.

Jason | 1051 comments I had an emotionally trying experience reading Sons and Lovers by D.H. Lawrence, but please do not interpret that as all bad - the writing is intimate and often beautiful, while the themes are thought provoking (my review).

Thank you, B, I have corrected. Serves me right for not checking my link after.

This looks really good Terri!

It was, Greg, even though the book is deeply pessimistic. I like it also because it educated me on what life was like for African Americans back then.

I've finished yesterday Marcel Proust La prigioniera.
As when I first reaad it almost 10 years ago, I still find Marcel - the character, not the writer - really creepy. I'd put him in prison!!!

message 12527: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3324 comments I finished reading The Memory Box. I found it crazy and not suspenseful at all. It was all crazy, silly behaviour. The premise of the mystery behind the story kept me reading .....but that wasn't suspenseful either.

dely | 5214 comments I have finished Patterns of Childhood by Christa Wolf and I still don't know how I will rate it but it will be 2 or 3 stars.
It was an interesting topic, there were several thought provoking parts, but I really don't like her writing style. I didn't enjoy reading this book despite the interesting topic. It couldn't hold my interest and I yawned more than once.
I just can't stand such writing styles where the reader has to struggle to understand what the author wants to say. I don't have enough patience for them.

Paul (paa00a) | 202 comments Whew! It took me three straight weeks to finish this massive reimagining of the Arthur legends, and I have so many conflicting thoughts about it.

PattyMacDotComma Nobody really knows how The Songlines work, but they may cover the whole world - fascinating stuff. This is English author and traveller Bruce Chatwin's entertaining novel about Australian Aboriginal "maps".
The Songlines by Bruce Chatwin 4.5★ Link to my review

Jason | 1051 comments Finished Shtum by Jem Lester - an account of a father's fight to do what's best for his severely Autistic son, while he also battles his own inadequacies and self-sabotage. A very informative book, that sheds light on the realities that caretakers have to deal with on a daily basis (my review).

message 12547: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie You know how sometimes you choose a book thinking you ought to read it more than you really want to? Well that is how it was for me and The Gene: An Intimate History. But hey, it was in fact really good and not too difficult!
