PattyMacDotComma A Thousand Splendid Suns is the story of two Afghan girls, by acclaimed author Khaled Hosseini, who previously wrote The Kite Runner about two Afghan boys. Literature and history. Win-win!
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini 4.5★ Link to my review

Chrissie Esther and Patty, ATSS is my favorite by Hosseini too. For me it is simple to choose between them.

This one is the favorite of many of my friends but I liked The Kite Runner better. Now, several years after reading them, I am not sure why but I retain that impression...

Leslie | 16369 comments I just finished Only Time Will Tell. I was under the mistaken impression that this was a thriller when I picked up the Kindle & audiobook as a Whispersync freebie a few years ago. Instead, it's a historical fiction family saga (and does have some thrilling moments, especially towards the end!) set mostly in between-the-wars Bristol. 4* for the audiobook edition, but I think only 3½ for the book itself.

Chrissie I have completed Reading with Patrick: A Teacher, a Student, and a Life-Changing Friendship.

So last night I wrote my review. Since so much is changed on my new computer I managed to loose the whole thing. I say grrrr now, but you should have heard me last night.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

It certainly was not easy to write. I think reviewing three star books are the hardest. One has a mix of good and bad.

I've read only 2 or 3 DiscWorld books and thought they were very funny. Guards! Guards! is my favorite.

At the moment, I think I like The Kite Runner better than A Thousand Splendid Suns, possibly because there's less time spent in such abusive circumstances, but it will take time to let this one settle. What a writer and what a time!

Chrissie Patty, I am fine with books that cover difficult situations. I in fact prefer such books.

Chrissie, it may be that I've forgotten some of the abuse in The Kite Runner. It was more the different circumstances of the two boys that stands out for me.

But the many repetitions of physical violence in A Thousand Splendid Suns was what I meant by abusive circumstances. I realise that's what happened, of course. I'm not a fan of particularly gory, grisly crime novels or war stories, either. It's not that they disturb me so much as they don't hold my interest, I think, shallow as I am. I realise I'm also not very consistent!

Hey, don't put yourself down; we each react differently. Gritty feels real to me. If abuse is drawn sensationally though, then I do not like it. Then I am being played with, and this annoys me. If it is drawn realistically, I am fine with it.

Tracey (traceypb) | 1193 comments Oh dear! The book that finally made me decide, no more short story collections. Margaret Atwood is a wonderful writer and some of these were really good, but not enough. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

This is a good reminder for me to resume my traversal of the DiscWorld novels. Death is one of my favorite characters, as is Granny Weatherwax.

I love disc world! I think maybe I'm due for another read. I was going through them all in order so I'll go back and find that thread and carry on once I've finished my current reads

There isn't an English edition but you don't miss anything. It was a useless book with a forced style and a pretentious language.

Petra | 3324 comments I finished Lost in September by Kathleen Winter. I really enjoyed this intertwined story of James & Jimmy. My review doesn't do the story justice.
Kathleen Winter's writing is wonderful to read, too. Always a pleasure.
