Chrissie I really enjoyed On Canaan's Side. The author, Sebastian Barry, REALLY has a way with words. The audiobook narration is exemplary. i.e. the icing on the cake.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

The book covers many themes and the entire 20th century from a personal view.

Albert I finished Joe by Larry Brown. This was my third of Larry Brown's novel. I definitely enjoyed Joe, but it was my least favorite of the three.

I really liked Fay, but was forewarned about Joe. So which is the third? Is there another one you can recommend? I need help finding good books. At the moment I don't know what I should read in June and I am getting worried.

Sandysbookaday (taking a step back for a while) (sandyj21) | 1533 comments The Mask of Sanity by Jacob M. Appel The Mask of Sanity by Jacob M. Appel is the first novel I have read by an author I have come to admire for his wonderful collections of short stories. He does not disappoint. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

This has been on my "To Read" list for a very long time. I will bump it up after reading this. Thanks, Jason!

message 11624: by Alice (new)

Alice Mc I've had a very dry reading spell recently, but getting back into the swing of things again, and polished off two books recently. They were both "ok" but I'm not particularly raving about either.

The One by John Marrs. Loved the concept, a quick easy thriller but didn't find the writing anything special.
Very short review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

The Dark Circle by Linda Grant. Focus on a TB sanitarium which I found fascinating. The characters less so.

message 11640: by Tweedledum (new)

Tweedledum (tweedledum) | 2167 comments Finished The Book of Laughter and Forgetting Kundera's first book. I rarely annotate an actual book, having had firmly rammed into me that defacing a book is the ultimate sin. But I just had to mark up all the sections that made me sit up and think... Or nod vigorously, or felt very saddened by. ( Pencil only of course)

message 11641: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma Islam isn't sexist and feminism isn't "Western". Old cultural practices are just that - old.

Susan Carland's new book, Fighting Hislam: Women, Faith and Sexism, explains it well. Don't blame religion for bad behaviour!
