Petra | 3324 comments I just finished The Blind Contessa's New Machine. I found the characters rather shallow and the storyline non-suspenseful.

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Finished Katherine by Anya Seton. I've given it 3.5 stars. It's well researched and well written, but some parts are too drawn out. And it's too "Cinderella" for my taste!

Oh, I absolutely loved The Blind Contessa's New Machine. Who says it is supposed to have suspense?! Loss of vision is extremely well portrayed.

Chrissie, I don't mean suspense in the terms of a murder/mystery but in the sense of anticipation or of not knowing what would happen. Something within the story should be unforeseen in some small way. This story was predictable. There were no surprises. She was very indiscreet about her actions, which just screamed everything that was to happen. No surprise, no suspense or hoping/wishing for an outcome. I guess the story just told itself without involving me as a participant.
The Contessa was a brave woman. She learned to navigate her world without sight and to live (not hide away). The blindness itself was well portrayed, I agree.

For me how blindness stealthily changed her life and how she chose to deal with it totally captivated me.

Arielle Morin (livingpagebypage) I just finished reading (well, it was an audiobook) The Color Purple The Color Purple by Alice Walker and I was not expecting to like it as much as I did. I ended feeling satisfied with the character development and how the story unfolded. I'm sad it's over! lol

Sandysbookaday (taking a step back for a while) (sandyj21) | 1533 comments Victim Mentality by Angelo Marcos Victim Mentality by Angelo Marcos

Angelo Marcos is one of a very select group of authors of whom I cannot get enough.

Victim Mentality is a very clever and immensely enjoyable psychological thriller like nothing else I have read.

Nick is OCD and has reached a critical point in his life -no one likes him, not his girlfriend, his support group, his agent.

When he lands a role as a career criminal he wants to meet one so that he can get into the role. Enter Gideon Mathias, master criminal and manipulator extraordinaire.

Highly recommended.

Thank you to author Angelo Marcos for providing a digital copy of Victim Mentality for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Chrissie I really enjoyed The People's Tycoon: Henry Ford and the American Century. Don't think it is some boring book about a corporate leader. Henry Ford dramatically shaped the last century in ways I was scarcely aware of before reading this book. It was in fact better than I thought it would be! The audiobook narration is fantastic.

Chinook | 543 comments I just finished the audiobook for Buffering: Unshared Tales of a Life Fully Loaded. I've been enjoying a lot of audiobooks by female comedians/actors lately and I assumed that being the chick from Drunk Kitchen that this would be funny.

In fact, it left me sobbing. Her mother has schizophrenia and she had an incredibly difficult childhood. This book should be read in high schools or something to ignite a discussion about mental health and how it's treated in the US.
